After Luis Suarez’s Departure Braithwaite Will Be Inheriting Number 9
After Luis Suarez’s departure Barcelona have announced Braithwaite as the new number 9.
Recently, the Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez left Barcelona to join Atletico Madrid. Atletico signed him for €6 million. Josep Maria Bartomeu, the President of the Barcelona board, initially did not want to give out one of their star players. However, finally, he agreed to it as Suarez was not a part of Koeman’s plan. Barcelona stated that both the clubs had reached an agreement regarding the transfer. The Blaugranas expressed their gratitude towards the player for all the time he was with the club. They thanked him for his hard work and dedication. After staying with the club for 6 years, he has finally bid farewell. Suarez is known to be one of the most important players and is strong and aggressive on the field. After his departure, the Danish football player Martin Braithwaite is asked to fill his shoes and take up jersey number 9.
On 28th February this year, Barcelona signed Brathwaite. It was an emergency signing and caused a lot of controversies. After the French footballer Ousmane Dembele got injured, he has been ruled out for 6 months. Hence, La Liga gave Barcelona permission to sign any player outside the transfer window. The rules state that if any player is ruled out for more than five months, the club is allowed to make a new signing. He has signed with the club till 2024 with a buyout clause of €300 million. They got him for €15 million.
In 2019, Brathwaite had signed with Leganes and made his debut for the club. Born in Denmark, Brathwaite has earlier been a part of several clubs such as Esbjerg FB, Toulouse, Middlesbrough, and Leganes before coming to Barcelona. Other players who have been in jersey number 9 is Ronaldo Nazario, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Samuel Eto’o. Replacing Suarez was quite a difficult decision for the Catalans. They had a proposal ready for Memphis Depay of Lyon but was canceled due to a lack of funding. Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, and Messi will now be making up for Suarez’s position.
