Chennai Super Kings has been showing a very poor performance in this season of the Indian Premier League. They are always a very hard opponent to face. However, almost every team has just passed away with a win against them this year. At the start of the season, Chennai was missing some major players, and that may be the reason they were losing but now after the return of players like Bravo, Rayudu, and Thakur they can still not find a way to win matches. Chennai has now lost 6 matches out of the 9 matches that they have played this season.
They did manage to win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their previous fixture on 13th October but their next match was scheduled against Delhi Capitals on the 17th of October. They had already lost to Delhi Capitals this season. Chennai Super Kings has a huge fan base and the fans were expecting a great match and wanted to see the men in yellow to win this game. If Chennai lost this match, it was going to be very hard for them to get back into the race. Let us see if Chennai Super Kings managed to win this exciting clash against Delhi Capitals.
Match Summary: Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals:
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat first as they did against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last game. Once again like the last game, Sam Curran and Faf du Plessis opened for Chennai. Chennai did not get off to a great start as Sam Curran got duck out. Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, and Ravindra Jadeja played pretty well and handled the run rate. MS Dhoni, who is having a bad season got out after scoring just 3 runs in 5 balls. Jadeja and Rayudu’s amazing finish helped Chennai score 179 runs at the end of their innings. Now, Delhi Capitals had to score 180 runs in 20 overs.
In the second innings, Chennai could not have asked for a better start as Deepak Chahar got a maiden over with a wicket of Prithvi Shaw. Chahar managed to get Rahane out too in his third over. Even though Chennai got two early wickets they did not have the game in their hands as Shikhar Dhawan was in his best form. Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, and Alex Carey got out but Shikhar Dhawan was still there on the ground and ended up scoring a century. The match got very interesting after a great 19th over by Sam Curran. Now, in the last over Delhi Capitals needed 17 runs in 6 balls to win. Shikhar Dhawan and Axar Patel were batting.
Scoring 18 runs in an over is not easy at all. However, Chennai had no pace bowlers left after Dwayne Bravo suffered a groin injury and had to walk out of the field. Jadeja had to take the last over and now things were easy for Delhi. They had to score 18 runs against a spinner and that too in Sharjah with Dhawan in an excellent form. However, it was Axar Patel who hit 3 sixes to win the game. With that, CSK had to face their 6th loss of the season. Chennai is now in a very bad position. They will make it to the playoffs only if they win all of their next 5 matches. If they lose a match, they can still qualify for the playoffs but they will have to improve their net run-rate a lot. It will also depend on the performance of other teams but nobody is willing to take that risk.
