New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed Monday that he is not considering a quarterback change despite the team’s 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Mayo stated that Jacoby Brissett will remain the starting quarterback for the Patriots as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins.

Although some have called for the team to play No. 3 draft pick Drake Maye, Mayo expressed full confidence in Brissett’s leadership, toughness, and dependability, which he believes are essential for the team during this difficult stretch.

Brissett, a nine-year veteran, had a rough outing against the 49ers, throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown by linebacker Fred Warner. This mistake, combined with the offense’s struggles to maintain consistency, led to speculation that a quarterback switch could be imminent. However, Mayo made it clear after reviewing the game footage that Brissett remains the leader of the team and that the coaching staff always evaluates every position to make the best choices for the team.

Brissett has faced significant pressure this season, having been sacked 15 times and taking numerous hits behind a weakened offensive line. Despite these challenges, he has completed 61 of 101 passes for 536 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Patriots’ offense has also struggled to consistently threaten defenses downfield, which has compounded Brissett’s difficulties. Mayo acknowledged that while Brissett could improve certain aspects of his play, his leadership is crucial to the team’s stability.

During his weekly appearance on WEEI radio, Mayo addressed the calls to start rookie Drake Maye. While acknowledging that fans and the media are eager to see the third-overall draft pick play, Mayo stressed that the team is sticking to its plan, which is designed with both the present and future in mind. He understands the frustrations surrounding the team’s performance but emphasized that the current approach is what he believes is best for the Patriots’ success.

Mayo reaffirmed his commitment to the team’s original plan for the season, even as they face setbacks and criticism. He explained that the team is prepared to endure difficulties as they continue to work towards their long-term goals. As of now, Brissett will lead the Patriots into their Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, with the coaching staff remaining focused on improving the team’s overall performance.
