The Austria’s Red Bull ring saw the defending champion and Formula One’s only Black Driver Hamilton clad in a shirt that read “Black lives matter “ and “ End Racism “ leading the others who were wearing T shirts reading “ End racism “ to the starting line with a banner reading End Racism .
The unity of Formula One drivers was portrayed against racism in the ring with all the other drivers in white shirt and Hamilton clad in Black. #we Race as One# is an imitative by the Formula One to voice the Covid 19 and racism.
This gesture before the start of the race at Austrian GP was a part of the initiative.
The Plan of action was before the anthem all the twenty drivers would take the knee to show their support to their initiative and send a unified message that they were against racism.
In the nod, 14 drivers knelt while the others did not kneel and this gave a mixed message to the world though the drivers who did not join gave their explanation tweeting that it was for religious reasons and few tweeting that the message that they wanted to convey was conveyed strongly and their action did not mean anything otherwise.
Formula One being one of the most watched sport in the world this mixed action attracted lot of criticism as the cameras of the formula One diverted the focus to the sky diver which instigated the viewers to anticipate lot of things of what happened and why this cut away of the cameras.
There has been a worldwide dissatisfaction on conveying the message in this confused state and not showing the images of the drivers on the grid was said to be a bit awkward.
Simon Lazenby in a sky broadcast was voicing his annoyance about how can formula one sport not show unity in conveying their message against racism while all other sports could and he calls it a shame on the sport.
Despite all these, the initiative of the formula One to engage more young people from the Black background is a much appreciated and gesture from the fans of the formula One Sport.
