It is quite unusual for football as well as the whole sports community that such a prestigious award giveaway is getting canceled but it is also an unusual circumstance at hand due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Hence, in the lack of sufficient fair condition for the prize of Ballon d’Or award, France Football has announced to have no winners in this calendar year. In recent times it was predominantly claimed by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Since 1956, the prestigious prize in the form of a Golden Ball is handed over to the Best Player on the Planet. However, due to the effect of Coronavirus global pandemic on everything around, it will be unfair to pick the best performer in the football world without proper measuring of the performances of all the players.
Which eventually means, Lionel Messi the star performer of 2019, will keep the crown for another 12 months. The Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi has 6 Ballon d’Or to his name, while the rival of Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo stands with 5 on the scoreboard of Ballon d’Or awards.
For the women’s game, United States star performer Megan Rapinoe will also keep her prestigious title for 12 more months.
Every top performer in the football world has to wait from another year to pass-by until they will be able to claim for it again. This year it was hard for the jury too, to select the best from obviously from the top two performers (Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo), Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, and Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City.
As per the France Football’s statement, It was for the first time in the history of Ballon d’Or awards, it will not be awarded in a year like 2020, due to the lack of sufficient fair conditions, since 1956.
France Football further added: This award conveys the values like exemplarity, solidarity and responsibility, which is expected over and above sporting excellence of the player. Since all the aspirants cannot be compared justly due to full-season play for some and others faced radically cut short seasons.
There are 220 jurors which are distributed across the world, who might have missed some important details due to emergencies at hand due to the pandemic, and hence the France Football is not ready to take a scar by awarding the Golden Ball with an asterisk mark saying “trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the Covid-19 health crisis”, rather than this they will prefer a small sprain to their history of awards.
France Football has set an example for the future to come for such prestigious award giveaways by saying: “The Ballon d’Or story is too precious to take the risk of damaging it with a wobbly exercise. In these turbulent times, taking a break is a luxury and an invaluable necessity. So that football, as a whole, regains momentum, passion and emotion.”
