Indian bowlers and Washington Sundar starred on Day 4 of the 1st Test match against England to get India back into the game.

England began their tour of India on 5th February and has been shining since the start. The tour began with the Paytm Test Series on 5th February at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It is a really interesting series as it will decide who will face New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship final. So, everyone was excited for this series from the 1st Test match itself. As a result, both the teams were ready to lock heads with each other.

Day 1:

England 1st Innings:

England won the toss on Day 1 and their skipper Joe Root opted to bat first. It was a smart decision as the pitch was purely good for batting. Also, the skipper knew that the condition of the pitch would deteriorate gradually by Day 3 or 4, and hence, they wanted to get the most runs out of it. Consequently, Dominic Sibley and Rory Burns opened the innings for them. They got to a great start but slowly lost wickets. At the end of Day 1, England was happy with their performance as they had registered a total of 263 after losing just 3 wickets. Sibley had scored 87 runs in 286 balls whereas Root played an unbeaten 128-run knock in just 197 balls.

Day 2:

England 1st Innings:

Day 2 began as Joe Root and Ben Stokes came to the crease to continue their innings. They were playing brilliantly as they were slowly building their partnership. Consequently, they gave a great boost to the visitors’ innings. Ben Stokes smashed 82 runs in just 118 balls whereas Joe Root played a sublime knock of 218 runs in 377 balls. Other players from the middle order also chipped in with a few runs to their side’s innings. As a result, at the end of Day 2, England was at a total of 555-8 in 180 overs.

Day 3:

England 1st Innings:

Day 3 began with England continuing their innings but they failed to deliver much with their bat. Soon, England got all out at a total of 578 in 190.1 overs and now India needed 579 runs to take the lead from them.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored a brilliant 73 runs in 143 balls to build a base for his side’s innings.

India 1st Innings: 

India began their innings as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill came to the crease. However, both the openers got out in the opening 10 overs itself. After that Cheteshwar Pujara (73 in 143) played a good knock to build the base for India’s innings. At the end of Day 3, India managed to reach a score of 257-6 in 74 overs. Pant played a terrific knock of 91 runs in just 88 balls to guide India here. Anyhow, now all hopes were on Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Day 4:

India 1st Innings:

India was trailing by 321 runs and needed to score a total of at least 379 if they wanted to keep themselves safe from a follow-on. However, they only managed to reach as far as 337 before they got all out. Sundar was the star as he scored 85 runs in 138 balls. Ashwin also scored a good 31 runs in 91 balls to help his side. Anyhow, England decided to not give a follow-on but instead bat for their 2nd innings.

Washington Sundar played a much required and unbeaten 85-run knock to help India reach a total of 337.

England 2nd Innings:

Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley came to the crease once again as England began their 2 innings. They were leading by 321 runs and now their only focus was to get a lead of at least 450+. So, they were all set but Indian bowlers had some different plans. Ashwin took a wicket off the first ball of the first over to dismiss Rory Burns. After that, England kept losing wickets one after the other but they had high hopes from their skipper Joe Root. However, finally in the 24 over, Root (40 in 32) also got out. Slowly, India managed to get England all out at a total of 178 before the end of Day 4. Every player chipped in with a few runs but Root was the highest scorer.

India 2nd Innings:

Now, India needed to score 420 runs if they wanted to win this match. Consequently, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill came to open the innings for India once again. However, Rohit soon got out in the 6th over after scoring just 12 runs in 20 balls. As a result, Cheteshwar Pujara (12* in 23) came to the crease. He managed to bat till the end of Day 2 with Shubman Gill (15* in 35). By the end of Day 4, India scored 39 runs after losing a wicket in 13 overs. Therefore, they now need 381 runs on the final day i.e. Day 5 of the match to win this game. On the other hand, England need 9 wickets to clinch victory in the 1st Test match.
