Jalen Carter, after narrowly missing out on the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award to Will Anderson Jr., is focusing on personal growth and team success as he heads into his second season.
Although he fell short of his individual goal, Carter remains motivated and has chosen to keep his aspirations private this time around. His primary focus now is on being the best player he can be and helping his team, the Philadelphia Eagles, win a Super Bowl.
Carter’s rookie season with the Eagles was impressive, despite not achieving his personal award. He recorded 33 tackles, six sacks, nine quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and a fumble return for a touchdown over 16 games. These stats placed him among the top rookie defensive tackles, showcasing his potential and setting the stage for a strong NFL career.
Carter made an immediate impact from his very first game, almost securing a sack on his first NFL snap during the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens. This early success was a sign of things to come, as Carter demonstrated readiness and eagerness to return to the field after his longest break from football since starting college.
His performance set a high bar for his rookie season, which he met with consistent playmaking ability.
Heading into his second year, the Eagles are expanding Carter’s role within the defense. Under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Carter has been practicing on the edge in certain packages, a new position for him since his high school days.
This adjustment allows the Eagles to utilize his versatility, pairing him with other key defensive linemen like Jordan Davis and Milton Williams, and adding more depth to their defensive schemes.
With the departure of longtime defensive leader Fletcher Cox, Carter is poised to step into a leadership role on the Eagles’ defensive line. He embraces the challenge, drawing parallels to his time at Georgia when he had to step up after the departure of key teammates. Now, in the NFL, Carter is ready to face even tougher competition and make a significant impact in his sophomore season.
