On Monday Chiefs has signed a record expensive 10-year extension deal with Patrick Mahomes worth $477 million in guarantee mechanisms and includes a no-trade clause and opt-out clauses if guarantee mechanisms aren’t met in a timely manner. This extension also includes $63 million fully guaranteed at signing & injury guarantee worth $140 million, which makes him the first Half a Billion Dollar athlete in the history of sports ever.
As reported, it was biggest contract in the history of all sports, which surpassed baseball player Mike Trout’s 12-year $425.5 million contract.
Patrick was already tied up in a 5-year contract with Chiefs, out of which only 3 are over yet and Chiefs has already won its first Super Bowl title in 50 years against 49ers, San Francisco as MVP in Feb 2020 due to excellent performance by Patrick and his team.
Patrick has also twitted: “Here to Stay…!” to confirm his deal with Chiefs with an amazing video of some of his best moments with his team.
Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt commented: “This is a significant moment for our franchise and for the Chiefs Kingdom. Since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick has developed into one of the most prolific athletes in all of the sports. With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform. He’s an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community, and I’m delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come.”
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid added a few more praiseworthy words to it: “I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players. The best part is he’s still early in his career. He’s a natural leader and always grinding, whether that’s on the field, in the weight room, or watching the film, he wants to be the best.
He’s a competitor and his team-mates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization and we are blessed he’s going to be our quarterback for years to come.”
Patrick Mahomes is 24-year lad, the youngest in NFL history to win a Super Bowl and League MVP. In 2018, he threw 5,097 passing yards an50 touchdown which were league-high.
In 2019, he threw 4,031 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 more to take the Chiefs to Super Bowl glory in the postseasons.
This woofing deal of half a billion-dollar might be a mere gateway for other great deals to follow for equally great talents and their clubs, 10 years is really a long time to see where the deal will take the whole world of sports and how many more great talents like Patrick Mahomes will emerge from the dust.
