Cleveland Guardians rookie Angel Martinez singled softly to center field in the seventh inning, ending San Diego pitcher Michael King’s bid for a no-hitter on Sunday.
King was in control against the AL Central-leading Guardians for six innings, allowing only a walk in the fourth inning before Martinez’s hit. Cleveland, which managed just one hit in their previous game against the Padres, trailed 2-1 at the time.
King was aiming to throw only the second no-hitter in Padres history. Joe Musgrove achieved the team’s first no-hitter in 2021 against Texas.
Throughout his six-year career, King had never thrown more than 109 pitches in a game. He started the seventh inning at Progressive Field having thrown 70 pitches.
The 29-year-old King had spent the previous five seasons with the Yankees, mostly as a reliever, before being acquired in a major trade that sent Juan Soto to New York on December 7, 2023.
San Diego’s pitchers Dylan Cease, Jeremiah Estrada, and Yuki Matsui combined to allow just one hit in a 7-0 win over the Guardians on Saturday, limiting them to only two baserunners.
