Manny Machado celebrates in the 9th inning

All-Star Jurickson Profar hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, and Manny Machado sealed the win with a two-run homer, as the San Diego Padres clinched a thrilling 10-8 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

The Diamondbacks made a stunning comeback in the top of the ninth, erasing a five-run deficit to take an 8-7 lead. Alek Thomas hit his first career grand slam, followed by pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk’s two-run shot off Robert Suarez.

However, Profar countered with his 13th home run, tying the game at 8-8 with a clutch hit to right-center off Paul Sewald. Jake Cronenworth walked and Tyler Wade pinch-ran for him. Machado then delivered his 12th home run, a decisive shot to left-center, igniting the crowd of 47,171—the largest ever at Petco Park.

“This team has a lot of fight,” Machado commented. “Our top players stepped up when we needed them most. We kept the pressure on, like we’ve been doing all season. Having the opportunity to win it in the same inning was huge.”

Reflecting on his game-winning homer, Machado added, “This ranks among the best moments in my career.”

Profar, having a standout season at 31 years old and on a $1 million contract, earned his first All-Star starter selection.

“We’re showing who we are as a team,” Profar noted. “We never give up. That’s our mentality. We have some real talent in our lineup.”

The Padres had led comfortably 7-2, but Enyel De Los Santos faced trouble in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out before Suarez took over. Thomas and Carroll’s hits brought the Diamondbacks back into contention, setting the stage for Grichuk’s dramatic home run into the left-field corner.
