Ryan Mountcastle and Jorge Mateo each hit a home run and brought in two runs to help the Baltimore Orioles win the series against the New York Yankees with a 7-2 victory on Thursday.
Ryan McKenna also hit a home run, and Jordan Westburg’s two-run triple contributed to a four-run fifth inning, which led to Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodón being replaced.
This win was the Orioles’ third out of the four-game series and put them one game ahead of the Yankees in the division standings. It was the first series this season between two teams expected to be strong contenders in the AL East.
Kyle Bradish, who started the game for the Orioles, allowed only one run in 4 2/3 innings. This was his first start of the season after being on the injured list with a UCL strain. Keegan Akin, who came in as a middle reliever, also performed well, allowing only one run while retiring four batters.
Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde praised the pitching performance of his team throughout the series, noting that they only allowed six runs in total against a strong Yankees offense.
Although Gleyber Torres hit his first home run for the Yankees in the series, he also made an error that contributed to the Orioles’ decisive inning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Torres’s mistake, emphasizing the importance of securing the ball, especially in critical situations like potential double plays.
