Daulton Varsho drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, helping the Toronto Blue Jays defeat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Sunday.
Varsho’s hit with two outs came off Mariners reliever Collin Snider (0-1), scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from second base. The victory secured a series win for the Blue Jays over the Mariners, who have now lost six straight series.
Chad Green (2-1) earned the win, while Génesis Cabrera pitched the 10th inning to collect his second save of the season.
Victor Robles started the scoring with a leadoff home run against Blue Jays starter José Berríos in the third inning. Toronto tied the game in the fourth when Bo Bichette doubled and scored on Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly.
Mitch Garver put Seattle ahead again with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, but George Springer equalized for Toronto with a three-run shot off Mariners reliever Ryne Stanek in the seventh.
“It was a crucial moment,” Springer remarked. “I was thrilled to come through in that situation. I was pretty excited, and it was a significant moment for us as a team. I’m glad I could contribute.”
Springer’s home run sparked enthusiastic cheers from the many Blue Jays fans in attendance in Seattle.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support every time we play here,” manager John Schneider said. “It’s been a great weekend of baseball. Three tight games, similar teams, and it’s fantastic to see our fans here backing us. We really enjoy coming here.”
George Kirby pitched six innings for Seattle, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. Berríos pitched six innings for Toronto, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
