Brittney Griner is set for a new chapter in her career after reportedly agreeing to a multi-year, seven-figure deal with the Connecticut Sun. While the move brings her to Connecticut for now, it also sets the stage for a meaningful homecoming, as the franchise is expected to relocate to Houston after the upcoming season under new ownership by the Fertitta family.

At 35, Griner remains one of the most accomplished players in women’s basketball. She joins the Sun following a season with the Atlanta Dream, where she averaged 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 51.8% from the field. Prior to that, she spent 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, highlighted by a championship run in 2014 alongside Diana Taurasi.

Griner’s career résumé is extensive. She is a 10-time All-Star, six-time All-WNBA selection, seven-time All-Defensive honoree, and two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Known for her dominance in the paint, she has led the league in scoring twice and in blocks eight times. She is also on the verge of history, needing just 18 more blocks to surpass Margo Dydek for the most in league history. Her career field goal percentage of 55.8% ranks among the best ever, trailing only Sylvia Fowles and Crystal Langhorne.

Beyond the WNBA, Griner’s achievements include a national championship with the Baylor Lady Bears in 2013 and three Olympic gold medals with Team USA. Her career was briefly interrupted in 2022 due to wrongful detention in Russia, but she has since returned to professional play.

In Connecticut, Griner will provide veteran leadership to a young and developing roster, reinforcing her impact both on and off the court as she prepares for an eventual return to her hometown stage.
