In an unexpected decision, the New York Jets announced the release of veteran backup safety Adrian Amos on Saturday. Despite being an eight-year starter with the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, Amos had taken on a backup role with the Jets. However, his playing time dwindled in recent weeks, leading to what sources describe as a mutual parting of ways.
The Jets’ decision to release Amos was influenced, in part, by the desire to provide more playing opportunities for younger backups Ashtyn Davis and rookie Jarrick Bernard-Converse. Amos, who signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $1.75 million contract in June, played 248 defensive snaps during his time with the team.
Amos’ reduced role came after the emergence of second-year safety Tony Adams during an impressive training camp. Adams secured the starting job opposite Jordan Whitehead, relegating Amos to a backup position.
Throughout his 11 games with the Jets, including three starts, Amos contributed 23 tackles and defended one pass. Additionally, he played a significant role on special teams, participating in 193 snaps.
In other roster moves, the Jets activated guard Wes Schweitzer and special teams standout Justin Hardee from injured reserve. Schweitzer, however, is not expected to start at right guard in the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons. The team also waived guard Xavier Newman, who had two starts.
