Dont’a Hightower Hired as Patriots’ LB Coach by Jerod Mayo; Played 9 Years with Team

The New England Patriots have recently made a significant addition to their coaching staff by bringing on board former linebacker Dont’a Hightower. This move comes as part of the team’s restructuring under the leadership of new head coach Jerod Mayo.

Having spent his entire illustrious NFL career with the Patriots, Hightower’s return to the organization where he made his mark as a player signifies a full-circle moment.

Drafted from the University of Alabama in 2012, he became a cornerstone of the Patriots’ defense until his retirement announcement in 2022, following a remarkable tenure that included accolades such as a Second-team All-Pro selection, two Pro Bowl appearances, and three Super Bowl victories.

Now, Hightower steps into a new role as linebackers coach as the Patriots embark on a fresh journey with Mayo at the helm. Mayo takes over the reins from the legendary Bill Belichick, who led the team for over two decades.

Despite recent struggles, including playoff absences and a challenging 4-13 record last season, the Patriots are poised for a resurgence with renewed vigor.

The team has been actively shaping its coaching staff around Mayo’s vision, with Hightower’s appointment marking a significant milestone. In January, New England elevated defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, a move that underscores Mayo’s commitment to assembling a formidable coaching team.

The recent hiring of former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator adds further depth to the Patriots’ coaching roster.

With Hightower’s arrival and the retention of key personnel such as safeties coach Brian Belichick, the Patriots’ coaching lineup for the upcoming 2024 season is taking shape, signaling a promising start to a new era for the storied franchise.
