Cornerback Darrell Green wore jersey number 28 during his exceptional career in Washington, and that number will now be retired by the franchise.

The Commanders announced on Thursday that Green’s number will no longer be used by any player during the 2024 regular season. Green was surprised by this news during a visit to the team facility, thinking it was related to this year’s draft.

“I’m deeply grateful,” Green expressed, as per the team’s website. “I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it now. This means a lot to me… I would’ve never imagined this.

I was so surprised. It’s almost like it gave me a new life. I’ve never been so taken aback. My head is still spinning, but I am completely humbled.”

Green, drafted in the first round in 1983, spent his entire 20-year career with the club. He achieved two Super Bowl victories, received All-Pro honors, and earned the Man of the Year award during his tenure.

Green, who holds the franchise record for interceptions, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
