Pete Abitante dedicated 46 years of his career to the NFL, never pursuing another profession.
According to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, Abitante was among approximately 60 employees who opted for the recent voluntary buyout program offered by the league.
Under the terms of the deal, participants receive three weeks of pay for each year of service. For Abitante, this translates to 138 weeks of pay.
Reflecting on his tenure, Abitante expressed gratitude, stating, “I’ve been incredibly fortunate. It’s just incredible. I pinch myself. I remember getting off the elevator at 410 Park [Ave.] for the first time there and it’s like a new car — you remember the smell and all that stuff. I’ve had a pep in my step ever since. It’s just the place I love.”
Although retirement wasn’t on his radar, Abitante seriously considered it upon receiving the buyout offer.
“I haven’t been dissatisfied with a thing,” Abitante shared. “Just you get long in the tooth, and say, ‘Is there anything next for me out there?’ I’ve still got a lot of energy, good health, but I’m 68. So what else do you want to do if there is anything?”
Now, with the buyout, he has the opportunity to explore new ventures while enjoying financial stability for nearly three years. After dedicating decades to the NFL, Abitante has earned this well-deserved opportunity.
