San Francisco looked like they might repeat a late-game collapse after their 20-point lead over Seattle shrank to just six points. However, this time the 49ers made important plays, especially from their rookies, to secure a 36-24 win over the Seahawks, putting them in a tie for the NFC West lead.
“It felt familiar for sure,” said All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner about the shrinking lead. “We could have handled this in two ways: either stand firm in a tough situation or continue the pattern of our recent losses. What I’m most proud of is how we stood strong.”
Rookie Renardo Green made an interception that set up Brock Purdy’s third touchdown pass, giving San Francisco a 29-17 lead in the fourth quarter. Isaac Guerendo sealed the victory with a 76-yard run, aided by fellow rookie Dominick Puni, with less than two minutes left.
Earlier in the game, fourth-round pick Malik Mustapha also contributed with an interception.
“So impressive,” said fullback Kyle Juszczyk. “They’re mature beyond their years. It was a big game for the whole rookie class, with Renardo stepping up, Malik, and I.G. Puni has been solid all year. We can definitely rely on these talented young players.”
