Mike Tomlin: Russell Wilson is expected to serve as the No. 2 quarterback

Justin Fields will continue as the starting quarterback for the Steelers.

Pittsburgh’s head coach Mike Tomlin mentioned in his Friday press conference that Russell Wilson had a strong week but is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback for the game against Las Vegas.

“He’s shown he is healthy, now it’s just about shaking off the rust,” Tomlin said, according to Mike DeFabo from TheAthletic.com. “He will likely be active as the No. 2 quarterback. I like what I’ve seen from him. But health and rust are not the same.”

Wilson missed the first five weeks of the season due to a calf injury, although he was available as the emergency third quarterback for Pittsburgh. Recently, he has practiced fully for the first time this season, but Tomlin mentioned that Wilson’s practice time has mainly been with the scout team.

Wilson stated this week that he is prepared to play at a high level if called upon.

In his five games, Fields has completed 67.6 percent of his passes, throwing for 961 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns.

Pittsburgh will release its full injury report with game statuses later on Friday.

Cleveland Browns will not bring Nick Chubb back for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles

Browns running back Nick Chubb has completed another week of practice as he works his way back from a serious knee injury. However, he will not be playing in Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

Chubb has taken part in practice this week, but in a limited way.

“I’m not going to get into how close he is or those details, other than to say he’s improving every day,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said during his press conference on Friday.

“Nick has the right mindset, and we’re supporting him as he takes it day by day. We’re focused on what he wants to achieve, whether it’s in practice, meetings, or the weight room. He’s really keeping a day-by-day attitude.”

Philadelphia Eagles players in the practice

Chubb hurt his knee in Week 2 of last season after rushing for 170 yards on 28 carries.

On a positive note for Cleveland’s offensive line, tackle Jack Conklin is expected to play on Sunday, although Stefanski didn’t provide details about his specific role.

Rookie defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. will also be activated for the game after completing his suspension.

Cornerback Denzel Ward (hamstring) participated in Friday’s practice, but Stefanski mentioned they need to see how he feels afterward. Ward did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday and is questionable for the game.

South Korea secured a solid victory over Jordan despite missing their key forwards, while Australia triumphed in Popovic’s debut as coach

Despite missing injured Premier League stars Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan, South Korea won 2-0 against Jordan, finishing at the top of their group in Asian World Cup qualifying on Thursday.

Son hurt his hamstring while playing for Tottenham in September, and Hwang, from Wolverhampton, had to leave the match after just 20 minutes in Amman.

In their absence, Lee Jae-sung scored the first goal with a header, and Oh Hyeon-gyu secured the victory after halftime, keeping South Korea on track for their 11th consecutive World Cup appearance.

“Son Heung-min is not playing in attack so we had a plan B,” said Korean coach Hong Myung-bo. “Hwang Hee-chan got off to a good start, but unfortunately got injured and had to leave the field.

Given his current injury status, it will be difficult for Hwang Hee-chan to play in the second game (against Iraq on Tuesday), but we will check on his condition.”

Jordan remains third in Group B, while Iraq is second, tied on points with South Korea after defeating Palestine 1-0 in Basra. Oman also won against Kuwait, finishing 4-0.

In Group C, Australia got back on track by beating China 3-1 in coach Tony Popovic’s first game in charge.

The Socceroos had only one point from their first two matches in September and faced a scare after 19 minutes at Adelaide Oval when Xie Wenneng scored, silencing most of the 46,000 fans.

Australia, aiming for a sixth straight World Cup, struggled to convert possession into clear chances, but just before halftime, Lewis Miller scored his first international goal with a header from Craig Goodwin’s free kick.

Goodwin then scored a stunning second goal from outside the box eight minutes into the second half, putting Australia ahead 2-1. Nishan Velupillay added a third goal in stoppage time on his debut, marking China’s third loss in three matches.

“We were close to a point in this game,” said China coach Branko Ivankovic. “So what we need to do now is to carry on … keep our passion and fight for our next game, which is really important. The real fighting is just about to start.”

Japan won 2-0 against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, remaining at the top of the group with three victories from three matches. Daichi Kamada from Crystal Palace scored from close range after 14 minutes, and Koki Ogawa added a late second goal with a header.

This result left Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Bahrain, who drew 2-2 with Indonesia, all with four points.

In Group A, leaders Uzbekistan and Iran drew 0-0 in Tashkent, with both teams having seven points. Saleh Hardani from Iran was sent off after 57 minutes.

The United Arab Emirates drew 1-1 with North Korea to stay in third place, while Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, earned its first win by defeating Kyrgyzstan 3-1, moving up to fourth place.

The top two teams from each of the three six-team groups will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the third- and fourth-place teams will advance to a fourth stage of qualification for Asia’s remaining two automatic spots.

England falls to Greece as Carsley’s strategy fails, while France secures a win

Lee Carsley faced his first challenges as England’s interim coach after a daring team choice led to a 2-1 loss at home to Greece in the Nations League on Thursday.

Erling Haaland became Norway’s all-time top scorer at just 24 years old, scoring two goals in their 3-0 win against Slovakia. Meanwhile, France, missing Kylian Mbappé and retired Antoine Griezmann, still comfortably defeated Israel 4-1.

After guiding England to two wins since taking over as temporary coach following the European Championship, Carsley felt confident enough to field a lineup without a recognized striker due to injured captain Harry Kane.

While the team looked promising on paper, it fell apart on the field as Greece exploited gaps in England’s stretched defense. Vangelis Pavlidis scored the first goal for Greece in the 49th minute.

Camavinga scores in the match

Jude Bellingham equalized in the 87th, but Pavlidis scored again in the fourth minute of stoppage time due to more careless defending.

Greece celebrated a significant victory by holding up the No. 2 jersey of George Baldock, a Panathinaikos defender who was found dead in his Athens home at the age of 31. Baldock had played 12 matches for Greece, and a moment of silence was observed before the game, with players wearing black armbands.

Pavlidis expressed, “We gave everything for him,” referring to Baldock, whom he called a “special guy.”

This defeat marks England’s first loss to Greece, ranked No. 48 in the world, in ten meetings and is a significant setback for Carsley’s ambitions of becoming the permanent national team coach.

The intended setup was meant to be flexible, featuring in-form Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer making his competitive international debut in central midfield, while Phil Foden and Bellingham took turns playing as the most advanced attackers in a midfield-heavy formation.

Saka exits England match due to leg injury, raising concerns for Arsenal

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka left the game with a leg injury during England’s 2-1 defeat to Greece on Thursday.

Saka was taken off in the 51st minute at Wembley Stadium after he appeared to feel discomfort in the back of his right leg and stretched it just before Greece scored their first goal two minutes earlier.

England’s interim coach Lee Carsley mentioned that Saka was “being assessed.”

“In the build-up to the first goal, you could see he felt something in his leg,” Carsley said.

Brazil secures an away victory against Chile in World Cup qualifying, while Messi’s Argentina ends in a draw

A late goal in the 89th minute by substitute Luiz Henrique gave Brazil a 2-1 victory over Chile on Thursday in a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.

This win means that Brazil’s coach, Dorival Júnior, whose team has faced pressure, will finish the ninth round of qualifiers in fourth place in South America.

Earlier, Lionel Messi’s Argentina played to a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in a match that was delayed for 30 minutes due to a wet field at Monumental Stadium in Maturin, Venezuela.

Argentina leads the 10-team qualifiers with 19 points after nine matches. Colombia is in second place with 16 points after losing 1-0 to Bolivia, while Uruguay is third with 15 points and has a chance to improve when they face Peru on Friday. Brazil currently has 13 points.

In a dramatic turn of events, Chile, one of the poorer teams in South American qualifiers, scored first just seconds into the match at the National Stadium in Santiago. Veteran striker Eduardo Vargas scored with a header past goalkeeper Ederson.

Players celebrates after the win

Brazil struggled to create clear opportunities but managed to equalize in stoppage time with a header from Igor Jesus, who replaced the injured Vinicius Júnior. Brazil had more ball possession in the second half but still couldn’t find clear chances.

In the closing moments, Henrique took a shot from the edge of the box, scoring the winning goal and leaving several Chile players in despair.

Brazil’s next match will be against Peru in Brasilia, while Chile will head to Colombia.

“This shirt means a lot. It is a great feeling for us to wear it. We know what is happening, but we wanted to change it,” Henrique said. “Our fans can be sure we will always fight for this team. We are the only five-time World Cup champions, and we will play with passion.”

Dorival Júnior mentioned that his team will experience ups and downs as he tries out new players.

“We will have a very strong team two years from now,” Júnior said, referring to the next World Cup. “But it is only in the dictionary that success comes before work.”

George Baldock’s family has confirmed that the soccer player tragically drowned while swimming

George Baldock, the Greece international soccer player found dead at his home in Athens on Wednesday, drowned while swimming in his pool, according to his family.

Greek police have stated there is no initial reason to believe the 31-year-old former Premier League player’s death was suspicious.

“We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” Baldock’s family said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The family mentioned that the Panathinaikos defender, who was born in Britain, was scheduled to return to the U.K. on Thursday to celebrate his baby son’s first birthday.

“George, you were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate, and person.

Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those who were fortunate enough to know you and those who adored you from the stands,” the family said. “We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you, and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son.”

Baldock had Greek heritage and played 12 matches for the national team.

He joined Sheffield United in 2017 and helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League twice, in 2019 and 2023. He signed with Panathinaikos in May on a three-year contract after Sheffield United was relegated to England’s second division.

“As a family, it has been incredibly touching but also very difficult to read the huge number of tributes from those who knew George and from those whose lives he touched. It was impossible not to love him,” his family said. “We ask that you please continue to respect our privacy at this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”

A moment of silence was held in tribute to the right back before Thursday’s Nations League game between England and Greece at Wembley Stadium, where Greece won 2-1.

Confusing strategies and unclear statements raise worries about Carsley following England’s surprising defeat

His strategies were unclear, and his comments afterwards were just as puzzling.

The pressure of being England’s soccer coach might be weighing on Lee Carsley after a night when his performance during the game and his media responses left many confused.

Carsley is serving as the interim coach after Gareth Southgate left following England’s loss to Spain in the European Championship final in July. He started off well with two 2-0 victories over Ireland and Finland in the Nations League last month.

Now, doubts are rising about Carsley’s ability to lead after he chose an exciting but untested lineup against Greece, which included no striker and several attacking midfielders. This decision led to a 2-1 loss in a messy and often chaotic game at Wembley Stadium.

“I never at any point thought I’d got it cracked,” Carsley said after the game about his criticized tactics, which were debated after the match rather than before. “It was a case of, let’s try something different.”

Lee Carsley waits for the start of the game

His later remarks about whether he wanted the job permanently added to the confusion, especially since the English Football Association is looking for Southgate’s replacement.

Carsley, who previously managed England’s under-21 team, was seen as a strong candidate to take over full-time after his earlier successes.

“I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of (people saying), ‘the job is mine’ and ‘it’s mine to lose’ and all the rest of it,” said Carsley, who has been informed he will also coach during the Nations League games in November.

“My remit has been clear from the start. I’m doing three camps. There’s three games left, and then hopefully I’ll be going back to the under-21s.”
