Paul Pogba Fires Manchester United To Top Of The Premier League Points Table Once Again
Paul Pogba fired Manchester United to the top of the Premier League points table in their victory over Fulham.
Fulham hosted Manchester United at the Craven Cottage for their 18th fixture of the Premier League. Fulham made two changes from their 1-0 loss here to Chelsea. Bryan replaced the suspended Antonee Robinson at the left-back position while Loftus-Cheek came in for Decordova-Reid. On the other hand, there were 3 changes to Manchester United from the draw with Liverpool. Bailly, Greenwood, and Cavani were starting against the Cottagers. Manchester United had won their last four away Premier League games against Fulham by an aggregate score of 12-1. The Red Devils had won just four of their first 10 visits to the Cottagers in the competition. So, looking at the stats, the match was going to be interesting as both the teams were looking forward to climb up the points table.
Match Summary: Manchester United vs Fulham:
The match began as Fulham was maintaining good possession of the ball from start. Fulham started brightly as Lookman’s shot from outside the box was blocked. Cavaleiro handed Lookman the ball for a second try but De Gea made a comfortable save. Lookman latched onto Anguissa’s through ball to fire low into the bottom left. That was Fulham’s first goal at home since the last four. Fulham was proving to be hard for Manchester United as they were giving a tough fight. They were playing 3-5-2 with Lookman and Cavaleiro upfront.
Manchester United got an equalizer in the 21st minute of the game. Cavani gobbled up a goal from close range as Areola was not able to hold Fernandes’ fizzed cross from the left. The Red Devils suddenly switched the gear. Manchester United started to dictate the play from the 26th minute. Fulham was staying compact and took heart from having scored earlier, even if they didn’t have a shot since. Fulham managed to regain a foothold in this game after having a bit of a wobble. At the end of the first half, Fulham looked more hurtled but did not threaten much apart from their goal. However, they were not under too much pressure either. The first half ended as scores were leveled at 1-1 with Manchester United dominating the possession.
The second half began and both the teams were looking different from the previous half. Fulham got a chance to take the lead as Lookman met a low cross from Loftus-Cheek but ended up firing the shot at De Gea. The Red Devils took a lead in the 65th minute of the game as Paul Pogba picked up the ball to the right of Fulham’s box. The Frenchman prepared himself and curled a fantastic shot into the far bottom corner with his left foot. Manchester United nearly made it 3-1 with a quick one-two punch Fernandes sent another dangerous delivery into the box and Aerola got across to deny Cavani. The Uruguayan’s movement had proven tricky for Fulham.
Then, Fulham continuously looking for an equalizer but was unable to convert the attacks for good. As full-time was approaching, Fulham started to increase their attack’s speed and counts. It seemed that they were not long from scoring an equalizer. Fulham’s last attack was threatening as Mitrovic got up in the air and nodded a header against Bailly’s thigh. The deflection of the Bailly briefly looked like it was creeping into the corner but it went just wide.
With that, the match ended as Manchester United had managed to make yet another comeback to win 3 points. The Red Devils led the way with a score of 2-1 at the Craven Cottage. Manchester United have now won 7 Premier League games having gone behind this season. They are now once again at their #1 position on the Premier League points table. Anyhow, both the teams will now be getting ready for their upcoming fixtures. Fulham will be locking heads with Brighton on Thursday 28/01 whereas Manchester United will face Sheffield United on Thursday 28/01.
