Match Summary: Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians:
Mumbai Indians won the toss and their interim captain Keiron Pollard chose to bat first. As a result, Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock came to open the innings for MI but the choice of batting did not quite go in their favor. They lost their first wicket in the first over itself as Jofra Archer dismissed Quinton de Kock (6 in 4). Then came Suryakumar Yadav to support Ishan Kishan from the other end of the crease. The duo played fantastically as they got 59 runs in the powerplay itself. They had a good partnership of 88 runs in just 53 balls. Then, in the 11th over, Ishan Kishan (37 in 36) got out. Just 2 overs later i.e. in the 13th over, Suryakumar Yadav (40 in 26) also got out.
As a result, Saurabh Tiwary and Pollard came to the crease. However, Pollard also got out in the 13th over giving his wicket away to Shreyas Gopal. However, now Hardik Pandya came in at 6. Tiwary started off a bit slow as he was trying to settle down but Pandya went for the big shots from the first ball. Both, Saurabh and Hardik were hammering the RR bowlers. In the 19th over Tiwary got out and Krunal Pandya (3* in 4) came to the crease. However, this did not affect Hardik at all. He smashed 27 runs in the 18th and 20th over to take MI’s total to 195-5 in their 20-over innings. Hardik had totally baffled the RR players as he contributed with an excellent knock of 60* runs in just 21 balls. Now, Rajasthan Royals needed nothing short of a miracle to chase the target of 196 runs.
Robin Uthappa and Ben Stokes started off the innings for Rajasthan Royals as usual. They went to hit big from the start as they knew that was the only way they could win. However, in this process Robin Uthappa (13 in 11) lost his wicket to James Pattinson in the 2nd over. As a result, Steven Smith came in at 3. Smith was just getting in form and building a partnership when Pattinson struck again to dismiss him in the 5th over. After that, Sanju Samson came to support Ben Stokes from the other end of the crease. At the end of the powerplay, Rajasthan Royals had already scored 55 runs after losing 2 wickets.
However, even after the powerplay Stokes did not stop and kept smashing the MI bowlers. Soon Sanju Samson also joined him and started thrashing MI. Pollard tried all the bowlers but none of them was successful in dismissing either Stokes or Samson. With that, Stokes and Samson helped RR chase the target in just 18.2 overs. Their brilliant partnership of 152 runs in just 82 balls guided RR to an 8-wicket victory. Ben Stokes had scored an astonishing 107* in 60 while Samson contributed 54* in just 31 balls.
Ben Stokes won the Man of the Match award for his match-winning knock of 107* runs in just 60 balls. His knock had helped RR to grab 2 points from the victory. The team was absolutely amazed and happy after this win. This win helped them move up to the 6th position in the points table. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians were in the 1st position but had not yet qualified for the playoffs. They will have to wait a little more before they make it to the playoffs. As a result, now they will be facing RCB in their upcoming fixture whereas RR will be up against KXIP.
