Real Madrid beat Getafe to climb back to the 2nd position in the La Liga points table.

Real Madrid hosted Getafe to play their 22nd fixture of La Liga at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid was struggling to keep pace with league leaders Atletico Madrid after winning just three of their last eight games in all competitions. The Los Blancos’ last home game saw them blow a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Levante. Real Madrid’s cross-city rivals Getafe sat mid-table in La Liga at the moment, albeit just four points above the relegation zone. Jose Bordala’s team entered this game bruised after two away thumping by Athletic Club of Bilbao and Sevilla.

Zinedine Zidane made two changes to his side that won 2-1 away from home over Huesca at the weekend. Marvin and Marcelo were coming in for Kroos and Odriozola. On the other hand, there were seven changes to Getafe from their 3-0 defeat to Sevilla. Getafe had lost 73.3% of their matches against Real Madrid in La Liga. As a result, the match was going to be really interesting as both the teams were looking forward to climbing up the points table.

Match Summary: Real Madrid vs Getafe:

First Half:

The match began as Getafe kicked off and the visitors started very brightly. Olivera got caught offside from Hernandez’s through ball down the left side. There was an early chance for Real Madrid as a free-kick came in and rebounded to Casemiro at the near post. It looked like a tap-in for the Brazilian but he somehow conspired to fire over the crossbar. Real Madrid was stealing to assert themselves in this game. The home side was taking risks in passing the ball around their penalty area with Getafe so keen to press. The hosts had managed to get away with it so far.

It looked like Real Madrid was playing 3-4-3 with Marcelo and Marvin as the wing-backs. That limited Getafe to play in a formation of 4-4-2. Both the teams were awarded a lot of set pieces but neither was able to convert any of them for good. Getafe offered close to zero attacking menace yet but they did a decent job of staying solid. They did not make things easy for their rivals. Consequently, the first half ended with a score of 0-0 with Real Madrid majorly dictating the play of the game.

Second Half:

The second half began as Angel got Getafe’s first shot at goal from inside the box after Suarez put in a brilliant cross. Courtois wasn’t worried though as it was off target. Both teams made changes as they were now a little more attack-minded. However, it was Real Madrid who broke break the deadlock as Benzema scored the goal. Getafe failed to fully clear the free-kick and Real Madrid restarted the attack. Vinicius had all the time in the world to cross from the right and Benzema nipped in front of Cabaco to power a header into the net.

Benzema went for a goal but it was too high and wide. Finally, the second half ended with a score of 2-0.
