Oscar Gutierrez or Rey Mysterio used to wrestle in an independent circuit. Later in 1992, he signed for the association known as Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion. In 1996, he signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) after a brief stint with Extreme Championship Wrestling. The Lucha libre was popularized by him in the United States of America. During his time in the WCW, he won the WCW Cruiserweight Championship five times. Not only that, but he is also a three-time WCW World Tag Team Champion. After WCW, he joined Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMIL). In 2002, he signed the most anticipated contract with World Wrestling Entertainment.
