Robert Saleh has quickly transitioned to a new role with the Green Bay Packers after being fired by the New York Jets just two weeks prior. On Wednesday, he was seen on the practice field, working under head coach Matt LaFleur, who has previously acknowledged Saleh’s significant impact on his coaching career. LaFleur is utilizing Saleh’s expertise to enhance the Packers’ offensive strategies, believing that his defensive background will provide valuable insights into opposing defenses.

During practice, Saleh focused on observing the offensive players, which LaFleur believes will help the team in their offensive approach. LaFleur emphasized that having a defensive perspective can be beneficial in identifying patterns and tendencies in defenses, thus improving the team’s overall performance. Saleh’s role is described as “fluid,” indicating that his responsibilities might evolve as he settles into the Packers’ system.

The relationship between Saleh and LaFleur dates back to their time as graduate assistants at Central Michigan University in 2004, where they shared living quarters. Their bond deepened over the years, leading to significant collaborations, including LaFleur’s hiring by the Houston Texans at Saleh’s suggestion. This friendship has remained strong, as evidenced by their agreement not to discuss Aaron Rodgers during trade negotiations, showing mutual respect amid professional obligations.

Although Saleh has a history of working with Packers’ defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley during their time with the San Francisco 49ers, he will not be involved with the defense in Green Bay. LaFleur expressed confidence in Hafley and his staff, suggesting that they should navigate their first year together without outside interference. This decision highlights LaFleur’s trust in his coaching staff as they establish their defensive identity.

Saleh’s departure from the Jets followed a disappointing start to the season, with a record of 2-3 and an overall coaching record of 20-36 during his tenure. Despite this setback, LaFleur noted Saleh’s passion for football and his eagerness to contribute to the game, even shortly after his firing. The Packers, who do not have a game scheduled against the Jets this season, view Saleh’s arrival as a potential boost to their offensive strategy as they seek to improve throughout the remainder of the year.
