Matt Coronato scored a hat trick to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks in Calgary

Matt Coronato scored a hat trick to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at home on Thursday night.

Adam Klapka scored his first goal of the season, and Dustin Wolf made 31 saves for the Flames, who avoided losing three straight games for the first time since a four-game losing streak in November.

Frank Vatrano scored a short-handed goal for Anaheim, earning his 300th NHL point, while John Gibson made 26 saves for the Ducks, who had won three games in a row.

The Flames didn’t get their first shot on goal until 5:57 into the first period. They then went on a power play after Cutter Gauthier was called for hooking MacKenzie Weegar at 10:20. However, the Ducks scored while short-handed.

Calgary turned the puck over at the Anaheim blue line, allowing Vatrano to take possession. He carried the puck into the left circle and scored with a wrist shot at 11:54.

Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks

Klapka tied the game 1-1 just 15 seconds into the second period. Martin Pospisil passed the puck to Klapka, who scored with a backhand shot after bringing the puck close to the net.

The Flames took a 2-1 lead with 44 seconds left in the second period. After a Ducks faceoff win, defenseman Jacob Trouba’s clearing attempt was blocked, and the puck fell to Coronato in the left circle. He skated into the high slot, spun, and scored with a wrist shot.

Coronato extended Calgary’s lead to 3-1 at 16:10 of the third period when Gibson’s clearing attempt hit Blake Coleman, sending the puck to Coronato. He then scored from close range.

Coronato completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal at 2:33 left, sealing the Flames’ 4-1 win.

In Calgary, the Flames have traded Kuzmenko and Pelletier to the Flyers in exchange for Frost, Farabee, and draft picks

The Calgary Flames traded left wings Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night in exchange for center Morgan Frost and left wing Joel Farabee.

In the deal, Calgary also sent a second-round draft pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick in 2028 to Philadelphia.

Kuzmenko, 28, was scratched from Calgary’s lineup Thursday night, while Pelletier, 23, was pulled after the first period of the Flames’ 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Frost, 25, played the first half of Philadelphia’s 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders. The Flyers drafted him 27th overall in 2017. This season, he has 11 goals and 14 assists in 49 games.

Morgan Frost and Anthony Duclair collide in the 1st period

Farabee, 24, was selected 14th overall by Philadelphia in the 2018 draft. The 6-foot, 186-pound winger has eight goals and 11 assists in 50 games.

Kuzmenko was traded again a year after the Vancouver Canucks sent him to Calgary. He had four goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season and was a healthy scratch earlier in January.

Pelletier had four goals and seven assists in 23 games for Calgary.

Flames goalie selected for NHL Midseason Rookie All-Star Team in Calgary

There won’t be an NHL All-Star Game this season because of the upcoming 4 Nations Face-off tournament, but NHL.com has still chosen their picks for the midseason Rookie All-Star Team. Among the standout players, Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf is leading the charge.

Wolf, with an 18-8-6 record, has been crucial in keeping the Flames near a playoff spot, possibly their first since 2022. He’s ranked 10th among NHL goalies in wins and sits in the top 10 with a .915 save percentage. His goals-against average (GAA) is 2.56, putting him in the top 20 among qualified goalies.

As a rookie, Wolf leads the league in wins and ranks high in GAA and save percentage. He’s been especially strong at home, with a 12-3-1 record at the Saddledome this season.

Utah Hockey Club and Calgary Flames

His name was not in the Calder Trophy conversation until after Christmas, but now he’s one of the top contenders for Rookie of the Year.

Fans on social media have started advocating for Wolf to be a Calder front-runner. If the Flames make the playoffs, especially with their scoring struggles, Wolf could even be in the running for the Hart Trophy.

Wolf has already earned a reputation for his awards. He won the WHL Top Goaltender award in 2020 and 2021, followed by the AHL Best Goaltender award in 2022 and 2023, and the AHL MVP award in 2023.

Now, with his first full-time NHL promotion, Wolf has been nearly flawless and shows signs of becoming one of the best goalies Calgary has ever seen. This impressive performance is why he earned a spot on NHL.com’s midseason Rookie All-Star Team.

Flames Aim to Extend Winning Streak in Crucial Showdown Against Jets

The Calgary Flames have ignited a three-game winning streak, starting with a road victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Their most recent triumph, a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild, highlighted solid gameplay, despite late-game lapses. This streak has pulled the Flames within three points of the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division, rekindling their playoff aspirations. Defenseman Rasmus Andersson praised the team’s effort, noting the significance of the hard-fought victory.

Balanced Scoring Fuels Flames’ Resurgence

Calgary’s recent success stems from contributions across its lineup. Martin Pospisil ended a 26-game scoring drought, while Clark Bishop netted his first NHL goal since 2018. Both players expressed satisfaction in helping secure wins for the team. Additionally, Andrei Kuzmenko, who ended a 28-game slump during the Flames’ last visit to Winnipeg, delivered a two-goal performance against Minnesota, signaling a potential return to form.

The Western Conference-leading Winnipeg Jets enter the matchup in fine form, going 6-2-1 in their last nine games. Their recent 5-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club featured Cole Perfetti’s breakout performance, netting his first career hat trick after a 14-game goalless stretch. Perfetti attributed his success to focusing on consistency and detail, with coach Scott Arniel praising his commitment to team principles.

Final Flames-Jets Matchup of Season Looms

Sunday’s clash marks the final regular-season meeting between the Flames and Jets. Calgary won their last encounter 3-1 in Winnipeg, while the Jets claimed the first matchup 5-3. Jets coach Scott Arniel stressed the need for adjustments, particularly around creating traffic in front of Flames goalie Dustin Wolf to improve scoring chances. Both teams will look to outmaneuver each other in this decisive game.

With playoff implications on the line, the Flames and Jets are determined to maintain their recent momentum. Calgary aims to close the gap in the Pacific Division, while Winnipeg seeks to solidify its Western Conference lead. The game promises an intense battle as both teams lean on reinvigorated players and refined strategies to secure a critical victory.

Blues Stay in Playoff Hunt with Gritty Win Over Flames, Led by Parayko and Faksa

The St. Louis Blues faced a crucial game against the Calgary Flames, knowing the importance of the match in their pursuit of a Western Conference playoff spot. After a disappointing loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets just a few days earlier, the Blues bounced back with a gritty 2-1 win. This victory brought the Blues to within three points of the Flames in the playoff race, keeping their hopes alive for the postseason. The game featured key performances from multiple players, including Radek Faksa, Colton Parayko, and Jordan Binnington, who made 26 saves to secure the win.

The game was a defensive battle, with both teams playing with intensity. The Blues dug in and made crucial sacrifices in the final moments of the game to preserve the victory. In the closing minute, with the Flames pressing for the equalizer, key players stepped up to block shots and deny Calgary opportunities. Jake Neighbours, Cam Fowler, and Faksa all made significant blocks, while Binnington made critical saves. This level of commitment to defensive play was highlighted by Blues’ coach Jim Montgomery, who praised his team’s effort, particularly in blocking shots and playing well in their defensive zone.

Parayko Leads with an Early Goal

Colton Parayko had a standout performance, scoring the opening goal just 49 seconds into the game. Parayko’s ninth goal of the season, a quick shot from the point, set the tone for the Blues’ aggressive play. His all-around game was exceptional, with 25:35 of ice time, four shots on goal, and three blocks. Parayko’s ability to get pucks to the net and his solid defensive play were key to the Blues’ success in the game. Coach Montgomery highlighted Parayko as the best player on the ice, noting that his dominant performance was exactly what the team needed in this pivotal contest.

Radek Faksa played a vital role in the Blues’ victory, scoring the game-winning goal midway through the third period. His tip-in of a shot from defenseman Tyler Tucker proved to be the decisive moment in the game. Faksa’s awareness and positioning were crucial as he found space in front of the net, deflecting Tucker’s shot past Flames goalie Dan Vladar. Faksa’s contributions were not limited to scoring; he also played a strong defensive role, and his effort to be around the net was essential for the Blues’ success. His goal was a result of excellent teamwork, including a great play by Alexey Toropchenko, who carried the puck into the zone and set up the scoring chance.

Fourth Line Stepping Up

The Blues’ fourth line, typically tasked with bringing physicality and energy, provided unexpected offensive contributions in this win. Faksa, Toropchenko, and Mathieu Joseph (who replaced Nathan Walker in the lineup) combined to create the game-winning goal. Joseph’s energy was evident throughout the game, as he made several key plays, including a crucial puck strip in the offensive zone. His strong positional play and second-effort mentality earned praise from Coach Montgomery. The fourth line’s work ethic and commitment to the team were evident, and their contributions to the victory underscored the importance of depth in the Blues’ lineup.

With this win, the Blues managed to keep their playoff hopes alive, but the road ahead remains tough. As Coach Montgomery pointed out, the team’s urgency level needs to rise even further as the season progresses. The Blues were the fresher team in this game, having had a day off while Calgary played the night before. However, they face the Flames again on Thursday, and the intensity of that match will only increase. The Blues will need to continue their strong defensive play, build on their offensive contributions, and ensure that they play with even greater urgency if they are to secure a playoff spot. The next few games will be critical in determining whether they can sustain this momentum and remain in the hunt for the postseason.

Calgary Flames Secure Surprise Playoff Spot, Combining Young Talent and Resilience to Exceed Expectations

The Calgary Flames started 2025 in a surprise playoff position, claiming the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. This came after a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on January 2, defying preseason expectations. Flames center Nazem Kadri expressed disbelief at the success, highlighting the ongoing nature of the season. Despite the unexpected position, Kadri emphasized the team’s resilience and focus on building further momentum as they move into the new year.

Preseason Expectations Were Low Due to Roster Changes

The Flames’ pre-season outlook was grim, as they had traded away several veteran players, including Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, and Noah Hanifin, among others. This was done in order to open spots for younger, untested talent. The trades left many questioning the team’s chances, but despite the changes, internal belief remained strong. Forward Ryan Lomberg, who had joined Calgary after winning the Stanley Cup with Florida, was confident that the team would be competitive, defying the outside doubts.

One of the standout aspects of Calgary’s recent success has been their team chemistry, especially in physical play. Ryan Lomberg has been a key figure in fostering this sense of unity, engaging in fights to protect his teammates. His actions on the ice demonstrate a growing sense of brotherhood within the team. Flames head coach Ryan Huska praised the team’s emotion and response after a tough loss to Vegas, highlighting their resilience and commitment to playing with intensity.

Youth and Veterans Contributing to Success

The Flames’ success has been fueled by a combination of young players stepping up and veterans returning to form. Jonathan Huberdeau leads the team in scoring, playing at his best since joining Calgary in 2022. Young players like Connor Zary, who celebrated his 100th career game, and goaltender Dustin Wolf, who has a strong record at home, have also made significant contributions. Their performances, alongside a solid team effort, have been key in Calgary’s unexpected playoff positioning.

Despite their strong position as of January 1, the Flames are determined to keep pushing forward. Ryan Lomberg emphasized the team’s focus on maintaining their playoff spot and continuing to prove their doubters wrong. The Flames are committed to playing their style of hockey and ensuring they remain competitive throughout the season. As they prepare for their upcoming match against the Utah Hockey Club, the team is determined to stay in the hunt and further surpass expectations.

Lawson Crouse scored twice to lead the Utah team to a 4-2 victory over the Flames in Salt Lake City

Lawson Crouse scored twice, including the game-winner, and Clayton Keller added a goal and an assist to help the Utah Hockey Club defeat the Calgary Flames 5-3 on Thursday.

Logan Cooley and Kevin Stenlund also scored for Utah, and Olli Maatta had two assists. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves. Utah ended a five-game losing streak with the win.

Blake Coleman recorded a goal and an assist for Calgary, while Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal also scored. Goalie Dan Vladar stopped 21 shots and saved a penalty shot by Alex Kerfoot in the third period.

Utah came back in the third period after trailing 3-2. Keller tied the game just 37 seconds into the period by redirecting Maatta’s shot-pass. Crouse scored his second of the game at 2:35 on a partial breakaway to give Utah the lead.

Calgary Flames (NHL)

Stenlund sealed the win with an empty-net goal at the one-minute mark.

The game saw both teams trade goals. Utah scored first with Crouse’s goal at 8:51 after a good play along the boards in Calgary’s zone. Coleman tied it for Calgary with a power-play goal with under a minute left in the first period.

Cooley put Utah ahead again in the second period with a power-play goal, but Calgary responded quickly. Zary scored 67 seconds later after a shot deflected off his foot. Pachal then gave Calgary their first lead at 15:14 of the second period with a shot from the slot.

Despite leading after two periods, Calgary couldn’t hold on and lost in regulation for the first time this season when leading after two periods.

Flames look to keep playoff hopes alive against Utah

The Calgary Flames entered 2025 in a playoff spot, an impressive achievement for a team that was expected to be rebuilding and near the bottom of the standings.

However, the Flames are aware that their work is far from finished as they prepare to host the Utah Hockey Club on Thursday, with the season’s halfway point still to come.

“We’re not here to be in a playoff spot January 1st and then not when the season’s over,” said Calgary forward Ryan Lomberg. “We’re in one now, we’ve got to do what we can to stay in one and continue to climb here. We’re proving people wrong, but we’re not proving ourselves wrong.”

The Flames began a three-game homestand with a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on New Year’s Eve, moving them into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

After trading several key veterans last season and during the summer and focusing on younger players, the Flames were expected to struggle. Instead, they are staying competitive and are on a 4-1-2 run.

Veterans like Jonathan Huberdeau, who has 16 goals this season and is on track for a career-high total, and Nazem Kadri are contributing significantly. Kadri scored another third-period goal to break a tie against Vancouver. Eight of his 14 goals this season have come in the third period.

Colorado Avalanche and Utah Hockey Club

“I always try to approach it and have that killer-instinct type mentality and want to be the hero,” Kadri said. “When the game’s on the line, I like to step up. It’s not going to happen every time, but I sure like to believe that.”

Utah is going through a tough stretch, losing five straight games and earning just one extra-time point after a strong 8-1-2 stretch that got them into the playoff race.

They come into Calgary after a 4-1 loss at Edmonton on Tuesday. The game was tied 1-1 until the Oilers scored twice in a 20-second span early in the second period.

“I think we pushed and I still think we have a lot more in that room and we would all feel and say the same thing about (the Tuesday) game,” said forward Liam O’Brien. “We had a push and hit a crossbar and had an empty net there on the one play. We kept it tight, but we have to find ways to win games.”

Utah now trails Calgary by five points in the playoff race.

Despite the recent struggles, coach Andre Tourigny is doing his best to keep the team positive and focused on the good aspects of their play.

“I liked our mindset in the (Edmonton) game. I think we went to play the right way,” Tourigny said. “We defended with a lot of pride, we were resilient all night long. Obviously, I don’t think we had the energy and the wheels to generate a lot of offense, but I loved the fight in our guys a lot.”

Utah’s captain Clayton Keller, who leads the team with 37 points, missed the Edmonton game due to illness. It was unclear on Wednesday whether he would return to the lineup in Calgary.

Flames defeat Canucks, extend strong home streak

Nazem Kadri scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, and Jonathan Huberdeau contributed a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Connor Zary also scored for Calgary, which improved to 13-4-3 in home games this season and 4-1-2 in its last seven matches. Flames goalie Dustin Wolf made 23 saves, bringing his home record to 10-1-1.

Brock Boeser scored for Vancouver, and Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves in the loss. The Canucks have now lost five of their last six games (1-2-3).

Kadri put Calgary ahead 2-1 at 9:18 of the third period, firing a wrist shot past Lankinen after a pass from Huberdeau. Vancouver pulled Lankinen for an extra attacker with 1:50 left, and Huberdeau sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from center ice with 1:02 remaining.

Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche

Calgary took a 1-0 lead at 14:31 of the first period. Jakob Pelletier’s breakaway attempt was stopped by Lankinen, but Yegor Sharangovich grabbed the rebound and passed it to Zary, who scored into the open net.

The second period was filled with physical play, including three fights and several penalties. At one point, Vancouver had five players in the penalty box, but the Canucks’ penalty kill was strong, including a successful kill of a two-man, five-on-three advantage for Calgary.

Vancouver tied the game 1-1 at 6:15 of the third period when Boeser redirected J.T. Miller’s shot from the point past Wolf.

Samsonov Shines in Golden Knights’ 3-0 Shutout Win Over Flames, Extending Win Streak to Six

The Vegas Golden Knights earned their third shutout win of the season with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at T-Mobile Arena. This shutout came just two months after a 5-0 win over Calgary on October 28, and it extended their current win streak to six games. The team’s goaltender, Ilya Samsonov, was instrumental in the victory, stopping all 31 shots he faced, marking his first shutout with the Golden Knights. His performance, along with solid team defense and excellent special teams, played a significant role in securing the team’s 25th win of the season.

Despite facing some adversity early on, including a two-man disadvantage late in the first period, the Golden Knights managed to keep the game scoreless. Their penalty kill, which has become one of their strengths after being a weak spot earlier in the season, was crucial in holding off Calgary. The team killed off all penalties, including a delay-of-game minor in the second period, and entered the second intermission still in a scoreless tie. This resilience helped maintain a tight, competitive game.

The Golden Knights broke the deadlock late in the second period, with Brett Howden scoring the game-winning goal. Howden deflected a shot from Alex Pietrangelo, finishing off a fast, well-executed passing play. Initially credited to Pietrangelo, the goal was later given to Howden, marking his 15th of the season and tying him for the team lead in goals with Ivan Barbashev. This goal came at a crucial moment, giving Vegas a one-goal lead heading into the final period.

In the third period, Vegas capitalized on their power play opportunities. After several unsuccessful attempts earlier in the game, the Golden Knights broke through with a power-play goal from Victor Olofsson, who scored his eighth goal of the season on a one-timer. The goal, which came midway through the third period, provided the team with a 2-0 lead. Tanner Pearson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, adding his second point of the game after assisting on Howden’s earlier marker.

The Golden Knights’ strong overall performance in this game highlighted their growing depth and ability to manage close contests. With a 15-3-0 record on home ice and 44 out of 52 points earned against Western Conference teams, the Golden Knights are firmly positioned at the top of the standings with 53 points (25-8-3). The team’s success has been built on solid goaltending, a strong penalty kill, and timely power-play goals. As they head into their final game of 2024 against the Montreal Canadiens, Vegas looks to maintain their momentum and continue their impressive season.

Sharks aim to snap losing streak against Flames

The San Jose Sharks will have extra motivation when they face the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.

Trying to avoid finishing last in the league, the Sharks lost their sixth straight game with a 6-3 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday, kicking off a six-game homestand.

San Jose led 3-2 through two periods but gave up two short-handed goals in the first 86 seconds of the third period.

“We stopped skating. We stopped hunting the puck, and it ended up in the back of our net,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “We’ve got to learn from this. It’s got to come from within the room. We have to understand and learn what it takes to win in this league, and we don’t know what it takes to win in this league.”

The Sharks have not finished higher than sixth in the Pacific Division over the past six seasons, and while the team knows it will take time to contend for a Stanley Cup, the immediate goal is to build winning habits.

“It needs to start now. It can’t start in two, three years,” Warsofsky said. “The winning foundational habits you need to win, it’s pretty simple and pretty direct. If we don’t do that, this is going to be a long process and we don’t want it to be a long process.”

Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators

The good news from Friday’s loss was that 2020 first-round draft pick Shakir Mukhamadullin scored his first NHL goal in just his ninth game.

“I’m trying to not think about the points, but sometimes it stays in your head,” said the big defenseman. “I feel I play with more confidence, but feel I have things to do to play better.”

The Flames are returning to action after a 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last Saturday. Calgary, which has earned points in four straight games (2-0-2), is just two points outside a playoff spot as the season resumes after the holiday break.

Between now and the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in February, the Flames will play 22 games in 43 days.

“It’s important for the players to recognize what they’re going to see here over the next little while,” coach Ryan Huska said. “We have 11 on the road, 11 at home, so it’s split pretty nicely for us. We have five back-to-back games.

So there’s a lot of hockey that’s going to be played by our team. It’s important to recognize that we’re going to need everybody to be at their best during this stretch.”

As the Flames prepare for back-to-back games against the Sharks and Golden Knights, they know they must improve their weak 4-7-4 road record.

“Always around that New Year’s time, teams are 35, 40 games into the season, playoff picture’s kind of starting to form,” forward Nazem Kadri said. “I think those points, obviously down the stretch, are huge, of course it intensifies, but that’s kind of as expected, nothing out of the norm.

We’ve really liked some of the things we were doing before the break, so it’s just a matter of continuing to do those.”

The Ottawa Senators, riding a strong streak, are on an extended road trip and will face the struggling Calgary Flames

The Ottawa Senators will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they face the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

Ottawa started its longest road trip in team history (nine games) with a 3-0 win against the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night. The Flames, however, blew a 3-1 lead in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins.

Linus Ullmark made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season with Ottawa. He has won his last six starts, allowing just five goals in that span.

“The past six games (from Ullmark) have been nuts. It’s been crazy to watch,” forward Shane Pinto said. “We’re just lucky to have him.”

Ullmark became the fifth goaltender in Senators history to record shutouts in consecutive road games. He also made 32 saves in a 3-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 13. With Anton Forsberg likely out until after Christmas due to injury, Ullmark is expected to start his fifth straight game on Thursday.

Pinto, Noah Gregor, and Tim Stutzle each scored for the Senators, who have won six of their last seven games. Pinto’s goal on Tuesday was his third in as many games after going 19 games without scoring.

“I don’t think anyone’s surprised when (Pinto) scores,” Ottawa coach Travis Green said. “He’s capable of scoring, obviously, more than he has. He knows that, we know that, and confidence is a funny thing. Once you get one goal, usually guys like that start to score a little more.”

Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators

The Senators are now 14-2-0 when scoring first this season.

Due to the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship being held at the Canadian Tire Centre and TD Place Arena, Ottawa will be on the road for their next eight games. With Tuesday’s win, they improved their road record to 6-7-1.

In Calgary, David Pastrnak scored with 38 seconds left in overtime to give Boston a 4-3 win over the Flames on Tuesday.

Matt Coronato, Nazem Kadri, and Ryan Lomberg scored for the Flames, who have lost four of their last six games and eight of their last 11. Dustin Wolf made 31 saves as Calgary dropped to 11-4-2 at home.

Kadri’s goal put the Flames up 2-0 in the second period, and he has now scored in four straight games, matching his NHL career-long streak.

“To me, it was like a tale of two games,” said Flames coach Ryan Huska. “The first half, I really liked our game. I thought we had them on the run for a lot of the beginning portion of the game. And then I thought they flipped the script on us. They had us on the run.”

The Bruins outshot the Flames 15-5 in the third period and 4-0 in overtime.

One of Calgary’s issues has been winning faceoffs. According to the Calgary Herald, the Flames have won the faceoff battle just five times in 32 games this season. Their season-long faceoff success rate is 44.6 percent, which ranks them among the bottom five teams in the league.

“It is an area that we have to get better in,” Huska said. “We got away with it in the first period. If you’re not starting with the puck ever, you’re chasing the game the whole time. It has not been a strength for us this year, but I know it can get better.”
