McCaffrey Downplays Calf Issue, Confident He’ll Play in 49ers’ Opener Against Seahawks

Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers’ star running back, missed Friday’s practice due to a calf issue that appeared during Thursday’s session. Although officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s opener against the Seattle Seahawks, McCaffrey stressed that he feels ready to play. He downplayed concerns, saying, “I feel great about where I’m at,” while acknowledging that limited practice often attracts media speculation.

During Friday’s practice, McCaffrey performed stretches and warmups on the sidelines under the supervision of Mike Sola, the team’s director of reconditioning. Unlike his usual routine, he did not join the running backs for individual drills or installation work. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that McCaffrey did not participate in the main practice but provided no further details about the injury.

McCaffrey Manages Health Carefully, Completing Training Camp While Avoiding Serious Calf Setbacks

McCaffrey described the calf issue as “nothing serious” and credited himself for not pushing through Thursday’s practice. Given his previous history of tendinitis and a torn PCL last season, the running back emphasized the importance of managing his health. He reported completing a full training camp without issues, reinforcing his confidence in being ready for Week 1.

The 49ers deliberately limited McCaffrey’s practice workload during training camp, giving him every third day off to reduce injury risk. This strategy, consistent with 2023, allowed him to stay healthy while other backs missed time. McCaffrey’s unexpected addition to the injury report on Thursday came despite him practicing earlier in the week and not appearing on Wednesday’s report.

Robinson ready to step up while Niners maintain depth without McCaffrey

If McCaffrey cannot play, Brian Robinson Jr., recently acquired from the Washington Commanders, is expected to take the lead role. Rookie Jordan James and backup Isaac Guerendo provide additional depth, although James is listed as doubtful due to a broken finger. Shanahan expressed confidence that the team is prepared to handle the situation without McCaffrey.

McCaffrey dismissed concerns about past injuries, including last year’s opening-week calf issue that eventually led to the injured reserve. He is fully focused on Sunday’s matchup against the Seahawks. Robinson also emphasized his readiness, preparing as if he could start at any moment, ensuring the 49ers’ backfield remains capable regardless of McCaffrey’s status.

Despite the San Francisco 49ers’ defeat against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, one NFL fan emerged as a major winner, thanks to a bold $5 bet on a 14-leg parlay. The fortunate bettor, identified as Travis Dufner from New Jersey, embarked on the Week 16 NFL games with a need for touchdowns from a diverse set of players, including Christian McCaffrey, Najee Harris, Gabriel Davis, Jahmyr Gibbs, DK Metcalf, Jerome Ford, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Jonathan Taylor, Calvin Ridley, James Conner, Raheem Mostert, Javonte Williams, Isiah Pacheco, and D’Andre Swift.

Placing his $5 wager on DraftKings Sportsbook with almost 100,000-to-1 odds, Dufner stood to win an impressive $489,378.01. A video shared by Bleacher Report captured Dufner’s reaction as he and his friends watched the replay of McCaffrey’s touchdown, ensuring he had not been down short of the goal line. Despite McCaffrey’s standout performance with 103 rushing yards on 14 carries and the crucial touchdown, the 49ers failed to score again until the fourth quarter, ultimately losing to the Ravens with a score of 33-19.

Notably, McCaffrey is having an MVP-caliber season, leading the NFL in both rushing yards (1,395) and yards from scrimmage (1,932). His impressive tally includes 21 total touchdowns, with 14 on the ground and seven through the air. Beyond his on-field achievements, McCaffrey has gained a new fan in Travis Dufner, who undoubtedly celebrated not only the 49ers’ star player but also his own remarkable betting success.

49ers Suffer First Defeat and Injury Woes in Loss to Browns: Samuel, McCaffrey, and Williams Uncertain

The San Francisco 49ers faced their first defeat of the season on Sunday when they played against the Cleveland Browns. Now, the team is anxiously waiting to assess the extent of the injuries sustained during the unfortunate loss.

During the 19-17 defeat, both wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey suffered injuries, with Samuel hurting his shoulder and McCaffrey experiencing an oblique/rib issue. These injuries were significant enough to force both players to exit the game prematurely.

After the game, Coach Kyle Shanahan was uncertain about the severity of these injuries, and further medical evaluations for both players are scheduled for Monday. Shanahan stated, “We don’t know yet.”

McCaffrey’s situation became more complex as he was initially taken out of the game during the third quarter due to an oblique problem. However, he briefly returned to the field for one play, a 6-yard run, before heading back to the sideline and eventually to the locker room. The team officially ruled him out with 10:58 left to play.

On the other hand, Samuel’s injury occurred in the first quarter, but the exact play or incident leading to it remained unclear. His injury was first mentioned alongside left tackle Trent Williams’ injury with 3:14 left in the first quarter. Williams had his right ankle rolled upon but managed to return to the game shortly afterward. Samuel, however, spent approximately 10 minutes in the medical tent during the second quarter before retreating to the locker room for the rest of the first half. He had two carries for 11 yards before his injury.

McCaffrey left the game after a carry, which was nullified due to a holding penalty. He had 11 carries for 43 yards and three catches for 9 yards, including a touchdown.

With the absence of two of their key playmakers, the 49ers’ offense struggled to find its rhythm following McCaffrey’s opening-drive touchdown. Ray-Ray McCloud and Jauan Jennings took over for Samuel, while Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell filled in for McCaffrey. McCloud and Jennings combined for three catches for 30 yards, and McCloud added two carries for 23 yards. Mason and Mitchell collectively had seven carries for 24 yards, with Mason accounting for five of them, including a touchdown that gave the 49ers a late lead.

Shanahan commented, “It’s more about just getting all the guys ready for it. You’ve got a game plan that’s got enough stuff in it, but just moving some positions around, we just made too many mistakes.”

The situation was further compounded by Williams not being at full strength after his return from injury. He missed only a few plays while having his ankle re-taped but was visibly affected, garnering a holding penalty that contributed to a three-and-out late in the third quarter. Williams was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot after the game.

Williams expressed, “It didn’t feel good at all. It’s football. I just tried to fight through it for my teammates. They’ve got a Hall of Fame rusher over there in 95 [Myles Garrett], and I wanted to get back out there so I could kind of help my team try to contain him. I didn’t want to put [backup tackle] Jaylon [Moore] in that position.”

Quarterback Brock Purdy took responsibility for not compensating adequately for the absence of these star players. He delivered his worst professional performance, going 12-of-27 for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception, resulting in a passer rating of 55.3 and marking his first regular-season loss as a starter. As the 49ers await further medical assessments for McCaffrey, Samuel, and Williams, Purdy acknowledged that it’s his duty to step up and support the team.

Purdy said, “They’re really good playmakers, so it hurts. But at the same time, we have got guys to be able to come in and make plays, too. That’s on me, being able to help out the guys like Ray-Ray and JJ, who are going to play more, Elijah coming in. I’ve got to do a better job with communicating with them in the huddle, giving them some sort of expectation of what’s to come in terms of the play and stuff. That’s something I’ve got to be better at. … I’m confident whoever comes in, even if Deebo and Christian aren’t able to go, we have got good players.”

Christian McCaffrey’s Grit: Sideline Battle and 49ers’ Tough Loss to Browns

In Sideline footage, we witnessed Christian McCaffrey’s valiant effort to warm up while battling an oblique issue during the San Francisco 49ers’ unexpected 19-17 defeat against the Cleveland Browns.

In an effort to stay in the game, McCaffrey demonstrated his tenacity by bending and rotating while kneeling, rebounding enthusiastically, and lifting his legs. McCaffrey had to leave the 49ers midway through the game since they were unable to win, dropping to a 5-1 record.

McCaffrey had run the ball 11 times for 43 yards and caught three catches before he left the game, extending his remarkable streak of 15 straight games with a score. He now shares a tie for first place with O.J. Simpson and John Riggins, two NFL greats. Simpson for the second-best NFL performance ever.

Against the Browns, San Francisco’s Brock Purdy had trouble finding his receivers because he was missing key players Deebo Samuel and McCaffrey. The standout defensive end for the 49ers, Nick Bosa, said that they didn’t play well, saying, “I don’t think we deserved to win. We didn’t underestimate them, but they did play better than us. We haven’t lost in the regular season in a long time, so it hurts a lot more.”

San Francisco’s offensive struggles were primarily the fault of Purdy, who had a disappointing game-ending performance. Only 12 of his 27 throws were completed, resulting in 125 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His quarterback rating was 55.3.

Jake Moody’s last-second 41-yard field goal attempt went wide to the right and gave Cleveland the victory (3-2), changing the course of the game forever. The 49ers’ offense was clearly lacking McCaffrey and Samuel, and Purdy struggled to take advantage of numerous opportunities.

Purdy admitted to his weaknesses and said, “I didn’t play at the standard that I needed to. We feel like we failed our own expectations. I just have to be better and make the throws. It’s the NFL. When you get opportunities, you’ve got to take care of them. There are plays that we didn’t make.”

McCaffrey was assessed in the locker room but was unable to return to the game, which might have an effect on his chances of winning MVP. Despite the setback, McCaffrey has 553 yards of total offense this season, including 23 receptions for 177 yards and two additional touchdowns.

San Francisco will play Minnesota on Monday Night Football the following week in an effort to get its mojo back.

Christian McCaffrey Sidelined Early with Oblique Injury as 49ers Fall to Browns

San Francisco 49ers’ standout player Christian McCaffrey was forced to exit Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns early due to an oblique injury, a blow to the team’s offensive firepower.

McCaffrey, who managed to score a touchdown early in the Cleveland matchup, was visibly in pain on the sidelines during the third quarter. The team’s medical staff attended to him, though the specifics of the injury remain unclear.

He briefly returned to the field after being initially labeled questionable, but McCaffrey’s discomfort became evident once more, prompting him to sprint to the locker room. He was officially ruled out early in the fourth quarter.

His absence was felt keenly, especially considering McCaffrey’s remarkable touchdown record. He had caught a 13-yard touchdown in the game’s opening drive, marking his 15th consecutive game with a touchdown—a feat that tied him with legends O.J. Simpson and John Riggins for the second-longest streak in league history, including playoffs. Only Lenny Moore surpassed this accomplishment with a streak of 17 straight games.

When McCaffrey left the game, he had accumulated 43 rushing yards on 11 carries and made nine receiving yards on three catches. Despite this setback, the 49ers initially kept the score close, trailing the Browns 13-10 at the start of the fourth quarter.

They managed to regain the lead after D Lenoir intercepted Browns quarterback P.J. Walker, setting up an eight-yard touchdown run by Jordan Mason.

However, the game ultimately slipped away from the 49ers. San Francisco kicker Jake Moody missed a crucial 41-yard field goal in the final moments, costing them their first loss of the season. Moody, previously flawless in his kicking this season, faltered with two missed field goals on Sunday.

In the loss, quarterback Brock Purdy completed 12 of 27 passes for 125 yards, securing a touchdown but also throwing an interception. Jordan Mason stepped up in McCaffrey’s absence, gaining 27 rushing yards on five carries and scoring a ground touchdown. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk contributed with 76 receiving yards on four catches.

On the other side, Browns’ backup quarterback P.J. Walker, filling in for the injured Deshaun Watson, completed 18 of 34 passes for 192 yards but threw two interceptions.

Running back Kareem Hunt managed 47 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while wide receiver Amari Cooper shone with 108 receiving yards on four catches. The Browns, who had fallen to the Baltimore Ravens the previous week, now stand at a 3-2 season record.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey Does Not Care About The Heavy Workload

Christian McCaffrey took every rep in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams, with Elijah Mitchell sitting on the bench. McCaffrey has taken 91.7% of the reps during the two weeks of training.

McCaffrey said, “I think it’s all dependent on how the game’s going. We had a lot of breaks last game. Sometimes, that’s just how it goes. There’s gonna be games, too, where Mitchell gets four or five carries in a row on multiple drives because he’s playing well, and he’s feeling it, and I’ll be out.

It’s really such a situational thing. You know, I don’t think it’s ever a plan for us to get all the carries or not. It’s just sometimes that’s just how the games go.”

The Niners had a short week coming up, but it was a surprise when Mitchell didn’t get any run at all. Kyle Shanahan, Head Coach of the Niners, admitted that earlier this week, it was an oversight on his part.

McCaffrey’s workload on a weekly basis

While playing every move is transparent, it wasn’t as if McCaffrey’s workload was insane. He took 20 carries Sunday after 22 in Week 1. He had a total of 48 touches in the two-week duration.

However, it is seen that McCaffrey just had one game last season with 20-plus carries after entering into the Niners. Given his injury, it is expected that Mitchell will get as many carries as possible as the season progresses, particularly on a short week against the New York Giants this Thursday.

McCaffrey played 100 percent of the offensive snaps for his team, with a total of 15 times throughout his career. Most of the running backs have only done about ten times in that same time span.

Sunday was marked as the first time McCaffrey played 100 percent of his snaps since Week 15 of 2019 with the Panthers.

McCaffrey leads the NFL with over 268 rush yards during the two-week duration. It’s the most rushing yards in his career and the first time to go over 200 yards, as per NFL Research.

His 304 scrimmage yards are the top compared to all the RBs and are also second-most overall.

McCaffrey is the first 49ers player with 100-plus rush yards and 1-plus rush TD to reach since Garrison Hearst in 1998. Christian McCaffrey could become the first player in the team’s history to achieve in the season’s first three games.
