This is a transformative year for the Pistons, with the best still ahead

The Detroit Pistons were only three minutes into their first preseason game in October when they were already losing by a large margin to the Milwaukee Bucks. At that point, J.B. Bickerstaff called a timeout to calm his team down.

He still remembers how the crowd reacted.

“They booed us,” said Bickerstaff, who was coaching the Pistons in his first season.

Now, the boos have stopped. The Pistons, a team that lost 28 games in a row last season, now have a 40-32 record and are close to securing a winning record. They are guaranteed at least a spot in the play-in tournament and can still finish in the top six for a place in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They’ve already increased their win total by 26 games from last season, which is the biggest improvement in the team’s history.

They are ahead of where they expected to be. And they’ve become one of the biggest surprises in the NBA this year.

“The plan was always to win. The plan was to be better in January than we were in November and to be better in March than we were in January,” said Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon. “I always told my people, ‘I don’t know what that’s going to mean, but that’s what we’re going to set out to do.’”

“But to say that with 10 games left we’re going to be at 40 wins, I would have lost that bet.”

The team has had a successful season in many ways. Cade Cunningham, whom former GM Troy Weaver made the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, has made his first All-Star team. He’s a serious All-NBA candidate and is averaging 25.7 points and 9.2 assists per game, numbers that only nine players have reached in a season, and only Denver’s Nikola Jokic has these stats so far this year.

Cunningham played in every game during last season’s 28-game losing streak. Now, he’s enjoying the fact that Detroit will be part of the postseason just a year later.

“It’s something that we had all envisioned,” Cunningham said. “As young guys, we had to find a way to climb to the top of the mountain. And we had a rough go early, as everybody can see. To stay with it, to continue to dig deep, this year has been super rewarding for all of us and we’re still super hungry.”

Cade Cunningham celebrates after scoring the winning basket in the 2nd half

Cunningham is a star leader, But he’s not the only reason why Detroit is winning

Two veterans — Tobias Harris and Tim Hardaway Jr. — joined the team after last season. They are regulars in the starting lineup and have provided the experience that a team of younger players needed.

Jalen Duren, a center in his third year, is averaging a double-double and shooting 70%. Malik Beasley was 17th in the league this season for fast-break points before Monday’s game. The Pistons have kept winning even though they’ve played most of the last three months without Jaden Ivey, who scores 17 points per game and has been out with a broken leg.

At the center of everything is Bickerstaff, who was fired by Cleveland after they made it to the second round of the playoffs last year. He became the Pistons’ coach after Detroit let go of Monty Williams, who still had five years and $65 million left on his contract.

But Langdon reached out with a vision, one that owner Tom Gores clearly supports, and it didn’t take long for Bickerstaff to be interested.

“Timing was important,” Bickerstaff said. “At the time, I had been off for about a month, and I was just spending a ton of time with my family and going to soccer tournaments and all that stuff. But I was a little antsy. So, when Trajan called, I was excited just to see and explore what the opportunity may be.”

“Looking at the roster, looking at the guys that were on the team, the young guys, it was a group that I thought my skillset and personality kind of matched. And I was intrigued.”

Detroit Pistons players celebrate in the 1st half

They started 0-4. They were 9-15 in early December, 13-17 at Christmas

Then Dec. 26 came — a game at Sacramento where the Pistons were down by 19 points in the third quarter and by 10 points with 2:45 left. They won 114-113 thanks to a four-point play from Ivey with 3.1 seconds left. That win was part of a run where Detroit won 10 out of 12 games, including a victory at Madison Square Garden over New York.

By early February, Detroit was one game under .500, but then they went on an eight-game winning streak, which included a 20-point win over Boston. Just like that, the Pistons were seven games over .500. It was clear that the playoffs were within reach. While their spot isn’t officially guaranteed, it’s almost certain.

“They’re aware of where they are,” Bickerstaff said. “What I think they’ve done a really good job of is not looking ahead and missing the moments. This team has found its consistency because it approaches every day the same, whether it’s a practice day or game day. The focus is on that day, whatever our task is at hand, without looking too far ahead.”

This probably isn’t just a one-time success for Detroit. Duren is 21. Ausar Thompson is 22. Ivey is 22. Cunningham is 23. The Pistons should have some cap space to work with next summer. It’s easy to see this team being even better in a year.

The team is happy. And the best might still be ahead.

“I have 1,000% fallen in love with this group,” Bickerstaff said. “And all my focus goes into them and seeing them enhance and seeing them grow. That’s the thing that I find the most joy in.”

Cavaliers Aim To Tighten Defense As Pistons Visit Cleveland

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to end their three-game losing streak, their longest of the season, when they host the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

The Cavaliers, who lead the Eastern Conference, were defeated 135-131 by the Houston Rockets on Saturday. Despite Darius Garland scoring 39 points and Donovan Mitchell adding 33, Cleveland’s defense was a major issue.

The Cavaliers shot 51.6% from the field and 43.6% from three but struggled to contain the Rockets, who had four players score at least 20 points. Houston shot 54.9% from the field and 46.4% from three.

Cleveland has allowed 114 or more points in eight of their last 12 games and couldn’t stop the Rockets’ big men, Alperen Sengun and Steven Adams, who combined for 40 points and 12 rebounds.

“We’re scoring 130 points, but it seems like consistently now we’re giving up in the 130s, and it’s just too much,” said Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson.

“If we can get back to defending like we have most of the year, we’ll be fine. But right now, we’re leaking in too many places.”

Cleveland forward Evan Mobley returned on Saturday after missing four games due to a calf strain, playing 29 minutes and finishing with seven points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Despite the tough stretch, Atkinson believes the team can use this adversity as a learning experience.

“I think this patch of adversity is good. It’s great,” Atkinson said. “This is the NBA. It’s tough. Let’s see how we respond to this. We’ll bounce back.”

Detroit Pistons (NBA)

Cleveland has dominated Detroit recently, winning 10 straight games, including a 113-101 victory at home on October 25.

The Pistons had their four-game road winning streak snapped on Saturday after a 121-113 loss to the Orlando Magic. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 35 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds.

The game featured a lot of physical play, including seven technical fouls and one flagrant foul. Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff was ejected midway through the fourth quarter.

“These games against teams like this are going to be extremely physical,” Bickerstaff said. “We understand that. We are good with that. Just make sure we maintain the physicality and do not allow the officials to become a part of the game because we take it too far.”

Bickerstaff was encouraged by the performance of forward Ausar Thompson, who played a season-high 29 minutes after missing two games due to illness. Thompson contributed 16 points, five rebounds, four steals, and a block in the loss.

“I feel great; it feels good to have reached almost the 30-minute mark,” Thompson said. “I feel great. I feel conditioned. However many minutes they need me to play, I’ll be ready to play.”

Thompson may have to play a larger role on Monday if forward Tobias Harris, who exited early in the third quarter with a head injury on Saturday, is unavailable.

Pistons guard Jaden Ivey undergoes surgery in Detroit after breaking his leg in a collision with the Magic

Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey underwent surgery on his left leg, one day after breaking his fibula in a collision during a win over the Orlando Magic.

The Pistons announced on Thursday that Ivey will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

“I promise to come back even better,” Ivey wrote in a social media post. “The recovery starts now #DetroitBasketball.”

Detroit selected Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 draft, and the former Purdue standout was having a breakout season. He was averaging 17.6 points and 4.1 rebounds — both career highs — along with four assists in 30 games this season.

The injury occurred when Orlando’s Cole Anthony slipped and fell as he and Ivey reached for the ball.

Jaden Ivey takes the ball forward

Anthony’s momentum carried him into Ivey’s planted leg, causing Ivey to fall to the floor. The 22-year-old Ivey appeared to be in serious pain, clutching his shin, and the team’s medical staff quickly came to his aid.

Members of the training staff held up towels to block the crowd’s view of the injury, while players from both teams gathered around him. After a lengthy delay, Ivey was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled out of the arena, with a towel covering his injury.

“It is tough for all of us,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said after Detroit’s 105-96 victory. “There’s no better person or teammate than J.I. and no one cares more about this than he does.”

Pistons defeat Magic to secure fourth win in five games

Jaden Ivey scored 22 points before suffering a potentially serious left leg injury as the Detroit Pistons beat the Orlando Magic 105-96 on Wednesday night.

Ivey got hurt when Orlando’s Cole Anthony dove for a loose ball early in the fourth quarter and collided with Ivey’s leg. Ivey had to leave the court on a stretcher.

Cade Cunningham added 19 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Jalen Duren contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds, Tobias Harris had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 12 points for Detroit, which has won four of its last five games.

Jalen Suggs led Orlando with 24 points. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 21 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Pistons shot 64.1 percent from the field in the first half and led 65-49 at halftime. Ivey had 16 points, and Cunningham added 12 points as they combined to make all seven of their 3-point attempts. Orlando was already trailing by eight points with 3:30 left in the half, and Detroit extended its lead with a 14-6 run.

Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers

Orlando came out strong in the second half, scoring on its first three possessions, which led the Pistons to call a timeout. Detroit quickly pushed its lead to 18 points, 73-55, thanks to another 3-pointer from Ivey off a pass from Cunningham.

After a basket by Suggs cut the lead to 13, Duren scored two dunks during a 6-1 run for Detroit.

Suggs helped spark an Orlando comeback, scoring six points, making a block, and getting an assist during a 14-1 run. Detroit finished the third quarter strong, scoring the last two baskets, including a layup from Ivey, to lead 84-75 heading into the fourth.

The Magic opened the fourth quarter with the first four points before Ivey’s injury with 10:07 left.

Orlando kept pushing. Carter’s basket with 7:40 left cut the Pistons’ lead to three points.

With the score at 93-90, Detroit responded. Duren scored on a putback, Harris made a jumper, Hardaway hit a midrange shot, and Harris added a bank shot to push the lead to 101-90. The Magic never got closer than seven points after that.

Pistons aim to finish flawless road trip against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets

In 2023, the Detroit Pistons didn’t secure their first win of December until their last game.

On Saturday night, they have a chance to finish December with a winning record as they complete a four-game road trip in Denver.

Detroit has won the first three games of the trip, including a 114-113 win over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night, thanks to a four-point play by Jaden Ivey with 3 seconds left.

Saturday’s game might be the hardest, as the Pistons will be playing in Denver’s high altitude against MVP candidate Nikola Jokic. But Detroit has a rising star in Cade Cunningham, who leads the team in scoring (24.2 points) and assists (9.7) per game.

Cunningham has recorded six triple-doubles this season and six double-doubles in the last eight games, helping Detroit reach 14 wins, matching their total from the 2023-24 season.

“Give him a challenge, and he accepts it,” said Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff about Cunningham. “That’s the thing that, as we’ve gone, I can make a comment to him, whether it be the fourth quarter or halftime or whatever it is, I can make a challenge to him in shootaround about his defensive matchup, whatever it may be, and he can go out and get it done.”

Cunningham is getting plenty of support from his teammates. Ivey is averaging 17.5 points per game, former Nugget Malik Beasley is scoring 16.7 points per game, and Jalen Duren is leading the team with 9.2 rebounds.

Duren will have to face Jokic, who is averaging a career-high 30.5 points per game. He also leads Denver in assists (9.5) and rebounds (12.7).

Detroit Pistons (NBA)

Jamal Murray is the second-highest scorer for Denver with 19.2 points per game, and Michael Porter Jr. (18.4) is third.

The Nuggets won’t have their best defender, versatile big man Aaron Gordon, who will miss his second straight game due to a right calf strain from Wednesday’s 110-100 loss to Phoenix. Gordon had previously missed 10 games earlier this season with the same injury.

Without him, Denver’s defense is even more vulnerable. In their 149-135 loss to Cleveland on Friday, they allowed a season-high in points, with Cleveland shooting 47.9% from 3-point range and 56.8% from the field.

Coach Michael Malone has expressed frustration with his team’s defense, which hasn’t matched their strong offense. Denver is tied for third in the NBA in scoring with 119.6 points per game but is allowing 117.2 points per game.

Malone pointed out that last year, his team was one of the top defensive units, but this season, they’ve dropped to 24th in the league.

“This season, our defense is not where it needs to be,” he said. “Our transition defense, our paint defense, and our second-chance points allowed are all in the bottom five. It’s going to be tough to consistently play well and defend well if you’re getting beaten down the floor, off the dribble, and on the glass every night.”

Jaden Ivey’s clutch four-point play lifts Pistons over Kings

Jaden Ivey hit a 3-pointer while being fouled with 3.1 seconds left and made the free throw to give the Detroit Pistons a 114-113 win over the struggling Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

The Pistons, who had been down by 10 points with 2:41 left, had the ball after Kevin Huerter made two free throws to put Sacramento up by three points at 113-110 with 10.8 seconds to go.

After a timeout, Ivey received the ball and made a 23-foot shot while getting fouled by De’Aaron Fox. The referee confirmed the foul, and Ivey made the free throw to give Detroit the lead.

The Kings had no timeout left, and Fox’s 50-foot attempt missed as time expired.

This win marked Detroit’s third straight victory as they continue their four-game West Coast road trip, which ends Saturday in Denver. Sacramento lost its fifth consecutive game, all at home.

A 3-pointer from Fox seemed to give Sacramento control at 107-97 with 3:36 left, but the Pistons responded with two 3-pointers from Malik Beasley and a layup by Cade Cunningham, cutting the lead to two points with 1:28 remaining.

Sacramento Kings (NHL)

DeMar DeRozan made a floater for the Kings with 1:16 left to stop the Pistons’ run.

Cunningham led the Pistons with 33 points and 10 assists, reaching 30 points for the fourth time this season. Beasley added 22 points, Ivey finished with 19, and Jalen Duren scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fox led Sacramento with 26 points, Trey Lyles scored a season-high 20 points, and DeRozan added 19. Sacramento was without Domantas Sabonis due to illness.

Keegan Murray contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Malik Monk scored 15 points for the Kings.

The road-experienced Pistons will face the Kings next

The Detroit Pistons hope to extend their success on the road when they aim for a third consecutive away victory on Thursday night against the Sacramento Kings.

Last season, the Pistons were the team with the most losses, and their schedule didn’t get any easier when they faced a four-game Western road trip during Christmas. The teams they played — the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Kings, and Denver Nuggets — all finished with winning records last season.

However, the Pistons, who had lost their last home game to the Utah Jazz, pulled off wins against the Suns (133-125) and the Lakers (117-114) as they spent a California Christmas without snow.

Now, they will face the Kings, who have struggled on their five-game homestand, losing their first four games, including a 122-95 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

The Pistons’ success has come from a team effort. Jaden Ivey, Tim Hardaway Jr., Malik Beasley, and Simone Fontecchio all scored in double figures in both wins. Jalen Duren had a double-double in Phoenix (17 points, 11 rebounds), and Ronald Holland II added 10 points in Los Angeles.

However, as Detroit owner Tom Gores observed during the win against the Lakers, everything revolves around Cade Cunningham. Cunningham scored 28 points and had 13 assists against the Suns and followed it up with 20 points and 10 assists against the Lakers.

Sacramento Kings (NBA)

“Our young men are performing well,” Gores said. “They’re really stepping up to what Pistons basketball is about. We’re watching all of our young men. Cade is just evolving into the leader he’s always been. So I’m very proud of that.”

The Pistons may face a tough crowd in Sacramento, but it could be one that is frustrated with the Kings. The team received rare boos from their home crowd after their worst loss of the season, a 122-95 defeat to the Pacers.

Sacramento guard/forward Kevin Huerter admitted that the boos were deserved.

“You never want to get booed at home, but we probably deserve it,” Huerter said. “We just lost three in a row, and then you get beat by 30 on your home court during Christmas time. They (the fans) deserve better.”

Kings fans are hoping for better offense. Sacramento had averaged 120.6 points in 10 games — going 5-5 — before scoring just 100, 99, and 95 points in their last three losses, the first two of which came against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Malik Monk, in particular, has struggled recently. He’s made only 6 of 27 3-pointers in the last three games. DeMar DeRozan has also had a tough stretch, averaging just 8.0 points on 9-for-30 shooting.

Monk stressed that the team needs to focus on playing together rather than looking for individual success.

“That (expletive) is just embarrassing,” Monk said about their offensive play. “Once we take one-pass, zero-pass shots, miss, they get a long rebound, go out in transition. Now, all our heads are down. So it’s just not playing offense the right way, not moving the ball.”

Derrick White contributed 23 points, and Kristaps Porzingis added 19 points, helping the Celtics extend their winning streak against the Pistons to 12 games.

Rookie Ronald Holland II scored a career-high 26 points for the Pistons, who struggled with their 3-point shooting, making only 7 of 37 attempts (18.9 percent). Detroit’s Cade Cunningham had 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Kings 111, Pelicans 109

Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans

Heat 114, Raptors 104

Bam Adebayo led the Miami Heat with 21 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in their victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Miami, which has now won four games in a row, also got 23 points from Tyler Herro and key contributions from the bench, with Nikola Jovic scoring 14 points and Dru Smith adding 11 points.

Raptors’ RJ Barrett struggled, making only 5 of 18 shots, but still managed a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Gradey Dick led Toronto with 22 points, including 12 in the first quarter, and Jakob Poeltl chipped in with 16 points.

The Celtics will play the Pistons at home, aiming to prevent their first consecutive losses of the season

The Boston Celtics will try to avoid losing two games in a row for the first time this season when they play the Detroit Pistons at home on Thursday.

The Celtics haven’t played since they lost 127-121 to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Boston managed to come back from a 14-point deficit in the second half to take a four-point lead in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t keep up in the final minutes.

“Effort was good,” said Boston coach Joe Mazzulla. “You’re down 14, take the lead. In the fourth quarter, I felt like we didn’t really have a rhythm to the game, but we were able to take the lead. I thought we kind of just ran out of gas here towards the end.”

It was Boston’s fifth game in seven nights, and they shot 18 of 60 from three-point range.

“These are the games you’ve just gotta fight through it,” said Jaylen Brown. “Tough schedule, but we don’t make any excuses. We know what the journey is about and we’re not skipping any steps. I thought we fought as a team. We didn’t let the rope go. We didn’t give up.”

Sam Hauser, one of Boston’s top reserves, left Saturday’s game in the second quarter with what the team called right adductor tightness. Mazzulla downplayed the injury after the game, saying, “He’s doing pretty good. He said he’d be OK, but he just wasn’t able to finish (Saturday’s game). But afterwards, he said he was good.”

However, Hauser is listed as doubtful for Thursday’s game. Also listed as questionable are All-Star Jayson Tatum (right patella tendinopathy), Jaden Springer (non-COVID illness), and Jordan Walsh (rib contusion).

Cade Cunningham in the 2nd half

Cade Cunningham had 29 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds to help the Pistons end a three-game losing streak with a 120-111 win over the New York Knicks on Saturday. Cunningham, Detroit’s first-round draft pick in 2021, is averaging 23.9 points, 9.4 assists, and 7.3 rebounds in 21 games this season.

“I try to do whatever it takes to help my team win, and my teammates have made me look great this year,” Cunningham said. “I’m just trying to help my team win and we’ll see what happens with it.”

The Pistons used an 18-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Knicks. Detroit’s Malik Beasley made 7 of 10 three-pointers and finished the game with 23 points.

“We’re trying to build and taking steps,” said Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff. “The hardest thing to do in the NBA is find consistency, whether as an individual or as a team. But it’s the habits we do every single day and, hopefully, (the victory over New York) is another game that’s a big step for us. But we keep seeing the value in those habits and we keep getting better and better.”

Thursday’s game will be the third meeting of the season between the Pistons and Celtics. Boston won 124-118 in Detroit on October 26, and Cunningham had 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 14 assists in Detroit’s 130-120 loss in Boston on December 4.

“I don’t say this lightly by any means but being around (Cunningham) and spending time with him — he’s the guy,” Bickerstaff said. “He has the ability to be an elite guy on a basketball team because of all of the things he’s capable of doing. He can manipulate the game, he can score, he can rebound, and he makes his teammates better.”

Cade Cunningham records a triple-double to lead the Pistons past the Knicks

Cade Cunningham recorded 29 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds to help the Detroit Pistons beat the New York Knicks 120-111 on Saturday.

Cunningham made 9 of 17 shots and 5 of 8 from three-point range. Malik Beasley scored 23 points off the bench, hitting 7 of 10 three-pointers. Jaden Ivey contributed 16 points, and Tobias Harris added 13 points for Detroit, which broke a three-game losing streak. The Pistons also ended a 16-game losing streak against the Knicks.

The Knicks were missing their top scorer, Karl-Anthony Towns, who was out with a knee injury. Jalen Brunson led New York with 31 points and 10 assists, while Mikal Bridges scored 20 points. Josh Hart and OG Anunoby each finished with 17 points.

Hart was ejected after getting his second technical foul with just over a minute left in the game. This loss ended the Knicks’ four-game winning streak.

Detroit started the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run, including a three-pointer by Beasley, to push their lead to 103-89 with 7:55 left. The Pistons continued to extend their lead, going up 107-91 after Jalen Duren’s dunk at 6:38.

Cade Cunningham in the 2nd half

Brunson made a floater to bring the Knicks within 118-111 with 1:22 left, but New York couldn’t score after that. The Pistons shot 70.6 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, making all five of their three-point attempts.

Detroit began the game with a 10-2 run and extended their lead to 16 points, finishing the first quarter with a 39-23 lead. They hit 13 of 23 three-pointers in the first half. Cunningham made 5 of 7 from beyond the arc before halftime and scored 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting, helping Detroit lead by 11 at halftime.

The Knicks made a 13-3 run in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 78-71 after back-to-back baskets by Anunoby. The Pistons increased their lead to 89-77 after Beasley’s free throw, but New York finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 89-85 as they entered the fourth.

Jaylen Brown leads the shorthanded Celtics to a win over the Pistons

Jaylen Brown scored 28 points and recorded nine assists to lead the Boston Celtics to a 130-120 win against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Kristaps Porzingis added 26 points and nine rebounds, while Sam Hauser made five of 10 three-pointers, finishing with 20 points. Payton Pritchard contributed 19 points, Derrick White added 14 points and 11 assists, and Al Horford also scored 14 points.

Cade Cunningham scored 27 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and provided 14 assists for the Pistons. Tobias Harris also scored 27 points, and Malik Beasley added 23.

Boston played without Jayson Tatum (right knee) and Jrue Holiday (left knee). Tatum leads the team with an average of 28.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Holiday averages 11.7 points per game.

Before the game, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla mentioned that Tatum’s injury is improving daily.

Kristaps Porzingis in his 1st game

The Celtics led 39-24 after the first quarter and 72-58 at halftime. Boston made 11 of 26 three-point attempts (42.3%) and shot 56.5% from the field before the break. Brown scored 23 of his 28 points in the first half.

The Pistons cut the deficit to 10 points with a Harris three-pointer that made it 90-80 with 5:19 left in the third quarter. However, Boston increased its lead to 103-88 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Celtics led by 20 early in the final quarter before Detroit went on a 12-0 run, bringing the score to 109-101, capped by a Beasley three-pointer. Cunningham’s jumper brought the Pistons to within six with 6:48 remaining, but Detroit could not get closer than five points for the rest of the game.

This was the second meeting between the Celtics and the Pistons this season. Boston won the first matchup 124-118 in Detroit on October 26. The teams will play again in Boston on December 12 and in Detroit on February 26.

NBA roundup: Bucks finish 4-0 in NBA Cup group stage

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 28 points, had eight assists, and grabbed seven rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Detroit Pistons 128-107 on Tuesday night, moving on in the NBA Cup.

Damian Lillard added 27 points and five assists for the Bucks, who won all four of their games in East Group B and secured a spot in the home quarterfinals against the Orlando Magic on December 10.

The Bucks have also dominated the Pistons recently, winning 11 consecutive games against them and 23 of the last 24.

Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 23 points and six assists, while Tobias Harris added 16 points and five rebounds. Detroit finished 3-1 in NBA Cup group play but didn’t make it to the knockout rounds.

Clippers 127, Trail Blazers 105

Norman Powell scored 30 points, and James Harden contributed 23 points and seven assists as the Los Angeles Clippers extended their home winning streak to nine games by beating Portland in Inglewood, California.

Amir Coffey added 19 points for the Clippers, who avenged one of their four consecutive home losses after the opening of their new $2 billion arena. Powell has averaged 29 points in two games since returning from a hamstring injury.

Deandre Ayton scored 16 points for the Trail Blazers, who lost their fourth game in the last five and their seventh straight road game.

Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers
