Lions’ Injury Woes and Fourth-Down Struggles Highlight Thanksgiving Loss to Packers

After a 31-24 defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the team has “dug ourselves a little bit of a hole,” bringing their record to 7-5.

Campbell candidly addressed the team in the locker room, noting that the Lions’ chances of winning the NFC North for a third consecutive season are now significantly reduced. He emphasized the importance of focusing on correcting mistakes and preparing for the next game rather than dwelling on setbacks.

Injuries Challenge Lions, While Rookies and Veterans Step Up in Offensive Production

The Lions were already dealing with injuries to tight ends Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, and starting center Graham Glasgow. The situation worsened when All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury, which Campbell expects could sideline him for a week or two.

Despite these challenges, Detroit’s offense saw contributions from practice squad player Tom Kennedy, who caught four passes for 36 yards, stepping up in St. Brown’s absence.

Rookie Isaac TeSlaa scored his third receiving touchdown of the season, helping narrow the Lions’ deficit to 24-21 in the third quarter. Meanwhile, fourth-year wide receiver Jameson Williams led the team with a career-high seven receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Jared Goff heavily targeted Williams, though he expressed regret over an incomplete short pass on a critical fourth-and-3 late in the game, which could have altered the outcome.

Lions Struggle on Fourth Downs Despite Solid Offensive Plan and Key Opportunities

Detroit has struggled in crucial fourth-down situations, failing twice against the Packers and going 0-for-7 since Week 11, the most attempts without a conversion in the NFL. Campbell, who took over offensive playcalling duties in Week 10, admitted there is room for improvement, particularly in converting third and fourth downs. These missed opportunities were pivotal in the loss against a strong Packers team.

Despite losing, Campbell expressed satisfaction with the offensive game plan, which aimed to maximize scoring opportunities despite an undermanned roster. The Lions entered the game averaging 29.6 points per game, but have now lost four of their past seven contests. Campbell highlighted that a few critical plays, especially in the first two series and on key conversions, ultimately determined the outcome against a competitive opponent.

Packers Honor 1923 Legacy with Throwback Uniforms Inspired by Pivotal Stock Sale

The Green Bay Packers have chosen to honor the year 1923 with their latest alternate and throwback uniform. According to team historian Cliff Christl, this year was pivotal in shaping the franchise’s future. While the Packers first began playing football in 1919, it was the stock sale in 1923 that secured their long-term survival. That year, the team raised $5,000 through public investment, ensuring their continuity in the face of financial uncertainty.

1923 Stock Sale Secured Team’s Future, Inspiring Historically Accurate Throwback Uniform Design

The 1923 stock sale marked the Packers’ transition into a publicly owned team, a rare model in professional sports. Christl emphasized that without this structural shift, the Packers would likely not exist today.

An individual owner, he argued, wouldn’t have had the same staying power to overcome the many challenges the team faced over the years. The money raised not only saved the franchise but also established a financial foundation that has kept them viable for over a century.

To commemorate this significant moment, the Packers designed their throwback uniforms to reflect the style worn in 1923. The new jerseys are navy blue with dark gold numbers and stripes—colors that mirror those described in a 1923 Green Bay Press-Gazette article. The goal was historical accuracy, achieved through research using black-and-white photographs and period newspaper articles.

Hand-Painted Helmets Revive 1920s Look, Showcasing Packers’ Deep Historical Commitment

Adding to the authenticity, the team also introduced throwback helmets designed to resemble the old leather helmets of the 1920s. These were not just designed but hand-painted, providing a vintage look that aligns with the uniforms and further anchors the homage to the team’s early days. The attention to detail highlights the organization’s dedication to honoring its legacy.

While the Packers have not yet announced the exact date of the debut, they confirmed the new look will appear during a home game in the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to a game day that not only showcases historical aesthetics but also celebrates a turning point that made the Green Bay Packers the iconic, community-owned team they are today.

NFL Overhauls Overtime Rules While Controversial Tush Push Faces Mounting Pressure to Be Banned

During the NFL’s offseason meetings, the league’s competition committee made significant changes to the rulebook. One of the notable adjustments was a change to the overtime format, aligning it more closely with the postseason structure. This means both teams will now have an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime, enhancing fairness and excitement.

However, not all proposed rule changes were approved, and one of the major points of contention involved the controversial “Tush Push” play, which has gained popularity, especially with the Philadelphia Eagles. While effective, this play has come under scrutiny, leading to growing calls for it to be banned in the future.

Tush Push’s Effectiveness for Eagles Sparks Debate Over Fairness and Rule Consistency

The Tush Push has been notably successful for the Eagles, leveraging the power of their offensive line and the strength of quarterback Jalen Hurts. The play’s success stems from the offensive line pushing the quarterback forward, with Hurts often aided by running backs like Saquon Barkley. This technique has proven particularly effective in short-yardage situations.

If the Green Bay Packers’ proposal to abolish the Tush Push is accepted, teams like the Eagles would no longer be able to rely on this powerful play. The play has sparked heated debate, with some fans and coaches advocating for its removal due to concerns about fairness and safety.

NFL Overhauls Overtime Rules While Controversial Tush Push Faces Mounting Pressure to Be Banned

Critics of the Tush Push argue that it goes against the spirit of the game. Some believe that the defense should be tasked with stopping the play rather than the league changing the rules to limit offensive advantages.

Others believe it creates an unfair situation, where offensive players can push the ball carrier forward, while defensive players aren’t allowed to push their teammates in similar circumstances. Cowboys COO Stephen Jones weighed in, emphasizing the need for consistency in rule enforcement, pointing out that pushing in other situations, such as during extra points, is already prohibited.

Eagles’ Dominance with the Tush Push and Growing Safety Concerns Amid Debate

The Tush Push has been a significant weapon in the Eagles’ offense, with an 88.1% success rate in 2023 and an 82.4% rate in 2024. The Eagles’ success using the play has been particularly evident in crucial situations, such as converting on third and fourth downs.

The Cowboys, who struggled to stop the Tush Push, could greatly benefit if the play is banned. In the 2023 season, the Eagles used the play to score two touchdowns against Dallas, making it a key factor in their offensive strategy. Removing this play would force the Eagles to adapt and could make defending them less daunting.

One of the primary reasons for the growing support to ban the Tush Push is concerns over player safety. Critics, including Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott, argue that the play is inherently dangerous, particularly due to the force applied and the posture required of the players.

McDermott, a member of the NFL’s competition committee, expressed his concerns about the potential for injury, especially to the spine. The league has long prioritized player safety in its rule changes, and some believe that eliminating the Tush Push could reduce the risk of serious injuries. As discussions continue, the safety of players remains a crucial factor in determining whether this play will be outlawed in the near future.

NFL Delays Decision on Tush Push Ban, Debate to Resume at May Meetings

The NFL has decided to temporarily table the debate over the future of the “Tush Push,” the Philadelphia Eagles’ signature quarterback sneak play. A proposal presented by the Green Bay Packers at the NFL’s annual meetings sought to make the push component of the play illegal. While opinions were clearly divided on the issue, the discussion has been postponed, with plans to revisit it at the next league meetings in May.

Packers’ Proposal on Tush Push Fails, Debate Continues Amid Strong Divided Opinions

For the Packers’ proposal to pass, it needed the approval of at least 24 out of 32 NFL team owners. However, it lacked the necessary votes, as 16 teams opposed the rule change. According to reports, the debate lasted 30 to 40 minutes and extended beyond concerns about player safety, touching on the play’s aesthetic and strategic impact on the game, showcasing the differing views on its legality within the league.

The Tush Push remains one of the most controversial plays in the NFL, with the Eagles strongly advocating for its continued use. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who has been vocal in his support of the play, reiterated his stance ahead of the vote. Despite the attention and media presence around the debate, he made it clear that he has already made his views known and that he lobbied for the play’s preservation. The ultimate fate of the Tush Push remains unclear, pending further discussions in May.

Jameis Winston Aims for Giants’ Transformation, While Jayden Daniels Enhances Dual-Threat Skills

In other NFL news, quarterback Jameis Winston has joined the New York Giants, signing a two-year deal in hopes of being part of the team’s transformation.

Winston, who aims to make a significant impact despite being a backup, sees this as an opportunity for a “paradigm shift” for both himself and the struggling Giants, who finished the 2024 season with a 3-14 record. Although the Giants have also signed veteran QB Russell Wilson, Winston is determined to compete for a starting role and contribute to the team’s success.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, is focusing on refining his skills ahead of his second season. Daniels, who impressed in his rookie year with his dual-threat ability, is working on improving his passing accuracy and decision-making under pressure.

Washington’s coaching staff believes Daniels’ ability to extend plays and make crucial passes will be a key factor for his development as defenses work to adjust to his style of play. His focus on improving his footwork is expected to further enhance his performance in the upcoming season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Green Bay assistant Anthony Campanile as their new defensive coordinator

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Green Bay assistant Anthony Campanile as their new defensive coordinator on Thursday night, giving him the task of improving one of the worst defensive units in the team’s history.

In 2024, the Jaguars (4-13) ranked 31st in yards allowed (389.9 per game) and 28th in points allowed (25.6 per game) under first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. Nielsen was fired, along with coach Doug Pederson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor, and most of the coaching staff.

Last week, Jacksonville hired former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen to replace Pederson, and Coen made Campanile one of his first hires. Many believe this is a crucial move, given how poorly the defense has performed in recent years.

“Anthony Campanile represents exactly what we want to be as a defensive unit and football team,” Coen said. “He brings an aggressive defensive mindset and a system that is adaptable to our players and allows them to play fast and physical.”

The Jaguars’ defense has ranked 20th or worse in total defense every year since 2018. Under Pederson, they finished 24th, 22nd, and 31st over three seasons. The defense also struggled in close games in 2024, finishing with a 3-10 record in one-score games.

Now, it’s up to Campanile to improve the unit. Many believe he has enough talent to turn things around quickly, with key players like linebacker Foye Oluokun, cornerback Tyson Campbell, and defensive ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. The Jaguars also have the fifth overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft and more than $30 million in salary-cap space.

Campanile is starting his sixth NFL season and his first as a defensive coordinator. In 2024, he was the linebackers coach and run game coordinator for Green Bay, where the Packers allowed the seventh-fewest rushing yards per game (99.4).

Before joining the Packers, Campanile spent four seasons as the linebackers coach for Miami (2020-2023). He has also worked at the college level with Michigan (2019), Boston College (2016-2018), and Rutgers (2012-2015).

The Jaguars also interviewed former Las Vegas defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Los Angeles Rams assistant Aubrey Pleasant, and Minnesota assistant Daronte Jones for the position.

Packers Meet with Concordia University Wisconsin CB in Preparation for 2025 NFL Draft, Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers will need to address the cornerback position this offseason. Eric Stokes is set to become a free agent, and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander has mentioned he’s unsure whether he will return to Green Bay next season.

Although Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon performed decently in 2024, it’s clear the Packers need more depth at the position.

It seems the Packers are exploring all options to find that depth.

The Green Bay Packers Have Spoken to Gio Nowotarski from Concordia University Wisconsin

As reported by Easton Butler of Packer Report, the Packers had a conversation with Gio Nowotarski, a cornerback from Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). Nowotarski also had a formal meeting with the Detroit Lions and spoke with the Baltimore Ravens.

Green Bay Packers celebrate in the 2nd half

According to CUW’s website, Nowotarski recorded 42 tackles, three interceptions, and a forced fumble recovery in nine games this season.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 180 pounds, Nowotarski hails from Reading, Pennsylvania.

While it’s uncommon for Division III players to make it to the NFL, it’s worth mentioning the success of Quinn Meinerz, a former player from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, who was named First Team All-Pro in his fourth season with the Denver Broncos.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Nowotarski will be a star in the NFL or even get drafted this year. However, Meinerz’s success shows that the Packers, along with other NFL teams, are smart to look into talented players from Division III schools.

Green Bay GM Gutekunst urges Packers to increase urgency following early playoff exit in Green Bay

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged that the team showed improvement over the course of the season. However, he also recognized that losing in the opening round of the playoffs wasn’t enough for a team with high expectations.

Even though Gutekunst believes the team is moving in the right direction, he challenged the players, especially since the Packers lost all six of their games this season against the top teams in the NFC, including the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Minnesota Vikings.

“We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,” Gutekunst said during a season-ending news conference on Thursday afternoon. “The life of a player in the National Football League is not very long. We’ve got a bunch of good guys in that locker room, we’ve got a bunch of talented guys in that locker room, and I think it’s time we started competing for championships.”

“I think they’re ready,” he added.

Green Bay’s 22-10 loss to the Eagles in the NFC wild-card round marked the end of the Packers’ season. This came after a 34-29 loss to the Eagles in their regular-season opener in São Paulo, Brazil. In between, the Packers lost twice to the Lions and twice to the Vikings, finishing third in the NFC North and securing the seventh and final playoff spot in the conference.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has had a successful run, leading the team to a 67-33 record over six seasons (3-5 in the postseason), including trips to the NFC championship games in 2019 and 2020. However, Green Bay’s most recent Super Bowl appearance was in the 2010 season, when the Packers won the title under head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“I think everybody’s gutted,” LaFleur said during his season wrap-up with reporters earlier in the week. “If you go out there and you play at your best and you come up short, there’s a different feeling.”

Green Bay Packers celebrates his fumble recovery during the second half

As the Packers look ahead to the offseason, they face the possibility of losing 11 players who are set to become unrestricted free agents. Among them are three starters: center Josh Myers, linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, and defensive tackle T.J. Slaton.

The team may also part ways with two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has struggled with injuries, missing 10 games in each of the past two seasons and serving a one-game suspension in 2023. Alexander did not speak to reporters during the locker clean-out day, stating he didn’t “have anything good to say.”

When asked if there was a disconnect between the organization and Alexander, Gutekunst responded, “No, no, no. I mean, there’s frustration, I think, on both sides, from the fact that he can’t get out there. I feel for him, because he wants to be out there and he wants to play. But no disconnect.”

The Packers can free up about $6 million in salary cap space if they part ways with Alexander, which would bring their total projected cap space to $57 million for the offseason (not counting the cost of signing their draft class).

After signing All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney and Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs last year, Gutekunst will have the financial flexibility to make more moves in free agency if he chooses. Along with the continued growth of a roster that was the youngest in the NFL for the second straight year, Gutekunst feels optimistic about the team’s future.

“The decisions we’ve made over the past few years have put us in the situation where we’re in pretty good shape,” Gutekunst said. “I feel really good about our ability to go do what we need to do to field a championship-level team.”

He added, “The opportunities that are going to be out there are unknown right now. We’ll see how that goes. But we’re in a better situation than we have been.”

Philadelphia Eagles to Battle Green Bay Packers in Divisional Playoffs in Philadelphia

In a game where quarterback Jalen Hurts and the passing game had difficulties, the Philadelphia Eagles relied on their top-ranked defense to defeat the Green Bay Packers 22-10 in the wild-card round of the playoffs on Sunday.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love had not thrown an interception since November 17 against the Chicago Bears, a streak of over seven games. However, he was intercepted twice in the first half, including a key interception in the final minute by All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun.

The Eagles’ defense finished the regular season ranked first in yards allowed per play (4.7) and second in points allowed per game (17.8). Vic Fangio’s defense overwhelmed a Packers offense that was missing receiver Christian Watson (torn ACL) and lost more players during the game, including receiver Romeo Doubs.

Hurts struggled after missing the last two games of the regular season because of a concussion. Wide receiver A.J. Brown also had an off game, making only one catch for 10 yards, after missing two days of practice this week due to a knee injury.

The Eagles showed during the regular season that they can win even when one part of their team is not performing well, and they proved this again in the playoffs, where the competition is stronger.

However, the offense will need to improve to continue advancing in the playoffs.

Jalen Hurts completed 13 out of 21 passes for 131 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Eagles’ 22-10 win.

Philadelphia Eagles (15-3)
Key stat: Hurts went 90 minutes between completed passes before finding his rhythm late in the third quarter. He completed 6 out of 13 passes for 39 yards before going 3 out of 3 for 61 yards on a drive that started with 5:46 left in the third quarter. Tight end Dallas Goedert finished the drive with a 24-yard touchdown reception.

Green Bay Packers players in the practice

Important play: With the Packers trailing by nine points midway through the fourth quarter, they needed a scoring drive to keep their hopes alive. It looked like Love had completed a fourth-and-3 pass to receiver Malik Heath, but Heath landed out of bounds, causing a turnover on downs.

Most surprising performance: Former Packers linebacker Oren Burks made an impact early with a big hit on returner Keisean Nixon on the opening kickoff, knocking the ball loose and giving the Eagles a takeaway that led to seven points. Burks also filled in for Nakobe Dean, who left in the first half due to a knee injury, and had five tackles.

Green Bay Packers (11-7)
For most of Sunday’s 22-10 loss, the Packers’ defense did its job, but the offense and special teams struggled.

This situation felt familiar, as the Packers lost in the playoffs in a similar way to their defeat against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round in 2021. In that game, the Packers were the No. 1 seed.

This time, they were the No. 7 seed, trying to upset the No. 2 seeded Eagles. The Packers had managed to pull off a similar 2-7 upset in last year’s playoffs when they won against the Dallas Cowboys. However, this season, the Packers entered the playoffs on a two-game losing streak.

Things were made worse when Love finished the game without his top three receivers. After Watson suffered a torn ACL in the regular-season finale, Doubs (evaluated for a concussion) and Jayden Reed (shoulder) were both hurt in the second half.

Love had completed 6 out of 6 passes to Reed and Doubs before they left, but he struggled to connect with other receivers. Love ended the game 20 out of 33 passes for 212 yards, with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Packers are now 0-6 against top NFC teams, losing twice to the Eagles, Lions, and Vikings this season.

Problematic trend: The Packers have repeatedly had issues with special teams in playoff games. The game started with Nixon fumbling the kickoff return, and later, kicker Brandon McManus, who had missed only one kick all season, missed a 38-yard attempt wide right in the second quarter when the Packers were down 10-0.

Green Bay Packers players celebrates after an interception

Last year’s playoff loss to the 49ers included a missed field goal attempt in the final minutes. In their 2021 playoff loss to the 49ers, the Packers had a blocked field goal and punt, the latter of which was returned for a touchdown.

Another troubling trend: The Packers are now 1-12 with Love as the starter when trailing by at least 10 points, including playoffs. Their only win in that situation came against the Saints in Week 3 of last season, when they came back from a 17-0 deficit to win 18-17. Since then, Love has lost 11 straight games in such situations.

Biggest issue in the game plan: The Packers were unprepared after former Pro Bowl left guard Elgton Jenkins suffered a shoulder injury and didn’t return. They first tried rookie sixth-round pick Travis Glover, who had played only 13 snaps all season.

Glover lasted just 20 snaps and was pulled after committing three penalties, including two holds and an ineligible downfield infraction. Kadeem Telfort replaced him at the two-minute warning of the first half, but he was also called for holding in the third quarter.

Green Bay Packers urge Jordan Love to speak up more as QB coach retires

Jordan Love will need to continue growing as the Green Bay Packers’ starting quarterback without his respected position coach, Tom Clements.

The Packers announced that Clements, 71, is retiring, and head coach Matt LaFleur said that the next step for Love’s development is to take on a stronger vocal leadership role within the team.

“I think the next step is just to continue to evolve as a vocal leader,” LaFleur said of Love during his season wrap-up press conference on Tuesday.

Clements will be remembered as the only coach to have worked with Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love.

This marks Clements’ second or third retirement, depending on how he views it. He first joined Green Bay as quarterbacks coach in 2006 under Mike McCarthy and left after the 2016 season. He took two years off before the Arizona Cardinals hired him to work with Kyler Murray, who was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019.

Clements also coached for the Saints, Chiefs, Steelers, and Bills.

In 2023, Clements told ESPN that if he had retired after his first stint with Green Bay, then he would have been “retired, retired” after the 2020 season in Arizona. However, Rodgers convinced him to return to Green Bay in 2022 after Luke Getsy left to become the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

“Man, it’s been a cool ride with him for the last three years,” LaFleur said about Clements, a former star quarterback in the Canadian Football League after his college career at Notre Dame.

Green Bay Packers players in the practice

“Talk about Favre, Rodgers, and then the development of Jordan Love. I mean, that’s pretty cool. I know he’s meant a lot to this organization — his contributions — and he will definitely be missed. I can’t say enough great things about him. I really appreciate him.”

Clements had two stints with the Packers, coaching quarterbacks Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love during his 14 seasons with the team.

The Packers have several in-house candidates to replace Clements, including assistant quarterbacks coach Connor Lewis and former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion, who joined the Packers’ staff this season as an offensive assistant. Getsy also spent part of this season as a consultant after he was fired as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.

The next coach for Love will be responsible for helping him grow as a starting quarterback. LaFleur called Love “an ascending player that is going to get better and better and better,” adding that he believes Love’s leadership role will keep growing.

“I think that just kind of comes with the position naturally,” LaFleur said. “I think he’s taken steps to get there, but I think he can really demand a lot because the locker room respects him. And they respect him not only as a person but by the work he puts in. He’s a grinder. He’s one of the guys; I think that’s one of his best qualities is he is one of the guys.”

“They all respect him, but I think, when things aren’t quite right, I think he can voice that as well. When guys aren’t quite doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and he’s one of the guys to talk to [them] about that. I just think it means more when it comes from your quarterback than it does from me or one of our other coaches.”

Matt LaFleur and Jordan love to celebrate after a touchdown

After a strong finish to his first season as a starter in 2023, which led to a four-year, $220 million contract extension, Love missed two games early in the season because of a knee injury and dealt with a groin injury midseason.

He threw 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during the regular season, but went the last seven regular-season games without an interception, only to throw three in the playoff loss to the Eagles on Sunday.

The Packers finished the season with 11 wins but ended with a three-game losing streak, including the playoffs, during which the offense struggled.

“Do I think he can play better? Absolutely,” LaFleur said. “Do I think I can help him out and be better? Absolutely. Do I think we can play better around him? Absolutely.”

“I just think it’s too much to put it on one person. I really do. I think collectively, we have to be better, and I expect better. We performed at a pretty high level a majority of the season and then took a dive. That’s why it feels, I’d say, different than a year ago.”

NFL Wild-Card Playoffs: Is it time for a change in Packers’ offensive strategy, moving away from the run game?

As much as I had hoped for the Packers in my playoff preview, Sunday just wasn’t their day. They fumbled the opening kickoff, giving the Eagles a short field. In the first quarter, they lost star guard Elgton Jenkins to a shoulder injury, and his replacements committed three holding penalties.

Already without Christian Watson (torn ACL), they lost wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed during the game, leaving them with Malik Heath, Bo Melton, and Dontayvion Wicks as the remaining options at wide receiver.

Brandon McManus missed a 38-yard field goal that could have given the Packers a chance. While their defense did well to contain Saquon Barkley, three interceptions of Jordan Love sealed their fate, and the Eagles were simply the better team.

However, the Packers still have reasons to be optimistic about their future. They are the league’s youngest team and have made back-to-back playoff appearances. Despite being in a tough division, their defense made great strides under Jeff Hafley’s first year as coordinator. Jordan Love ranked second in the league in QBR during the last two months of the season.

Although Love didn’t perform well against the Eagles, one bad game, especially with multiple starters missing, shouldn’t overshadow the improvements made throughout the year.

If the Packers want to improve in 2025, they may need to consider leaning more on Love and reducing their reliance on the running game. This season, they were the most run-heavy team on early downs in neutral game situations. They only passed the ball 42.7% of the time in those situations, significantly more than the Eagles, who were ranked 31st in passing.

This run-heavy approach led to heavy usage of Josh Jacobs. His numbers seemed promising—1,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl nod—but some advanced stats paint a different picture. By cumulative rushing expected points added (EPA) from NFL Next Gen Stats, Jacobs ranked 135th.

Green Bay packers celebrates in the 2nd half

Henry and Barkley produced a lot of volume efficiently, while Jacobs had a lot of volume but was inefficient on a per-play basis. By EPA per carry, Jacobs ranked 25th out of 31 rushers in 2024.

What didn’t EPA like? Jacobs fumbled four times, and over 60% of his carries resulted in negative EPA. In comparison, Barkley and Henry had fewer negative plays. Jacobs didn’t have a run longer than 40 yards, while Barkley had seven and Henry had nine.

Jacobs was less impressive than his backups, like Emanuel Wilson, Chris Brooks, and MarShawn Lloyd, who combined to generate positive EPA on their 145 carries. Jacobs, on the other hand, had a negative EPA on early downs. Green Bay gained more EPA per play when Jacobs was off the field than when he was on it.

Sunday’s game showed how Jacobs can both impress and hold back the offense. His biggest play was a 31-yard run at the end of the third quarter, which set up his own 1-yard touchdown. However, his previous 16 carries only gained 48 yards and didn’t result in any first downs.

Jacobs broke tackles, but many of his runs didn’t keep the offense on track. He also fumbled inside the 10-yard line, though the Packers recovered it. Despite his big run, EPA showed Jacobs was still a net negative for the Packers in that game.

Jacobs had 18 carries for 81 yards, one touchdown, and three catches for 40 yards in the Packers’ loss to Philadelphia. With Jacobs struggling to make an impact, Love’s average pass distance on Sunday was 9.3 yards, which ranked 29th in the league for average distance to convert.

This didn’t work against the Eagles, especially with the injuries the Packers were dealing with. Love wasn’t effective on first and second downs, and the running game’s struggles were part of the reason they didn’t score on their first six drives.

If the Packers leaned more on Love early in the game, it might help make Jacobs more effective. One metric that favored Jacobs was rush yards over expectation (RYOE), where he ranked fifth among all backs with 217 RYOE. However, Jacobs’ carries were expected to gain only 3.7 yards per rush.

More passing attempts on early downs would help keep Jacobs fresher and could increase his yards per carry. This wouldn’t have changed the result against the Eagles, but it could help improve the Packers’ offensive efficiency in 2025.

Injuries contribute to Packers’ defeat in wild-card game against Eagles

By the end of the game, the Green Bay Packers had lost their top two remaining wide receivers, a couple of offensive linemen, and a starting defensive tackle.

The bigger issue, however, was that their once-promising season was already over before they lost those five players.

In a game that mirrored many of the losses the seventh-seeded Packers suffered during the regular season against the NFC’s top teams, their struggling offense and some poor special teams play caused them to lose again in Sunday’s 22-10 wild-card defeat to the second-seeded Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

Even though they won two more games this year compared to last season, the feeling after Sunday’s loss was much more discouraging than the previous year. In 2024, the Packers only won nine regular-season games but ended the season strong, winning six of their last eight games to make the playoffs before losing in the final minute of the divisional round.

“I think it’s tough to say right now after a loss,” said Packers quarterback Jordan Love when asked about the difference between this season and last season. “I don’t know if I’d say it’s pointing down.”

The Packers were down 10-0 to the Eagles in the third quarter when wide receiver Romeo Doubs suffered a concussion. Doubs had fallen hard in the end zone after a potential touchdown pass was broken up and didn’t return after being diagnosed with his second concussion of the season. The Packers ended that drive with a field goal, their first points of the game, with 5:46 left in the third quarter.

By then, they were already without left guard Elgton Jenkins, who had suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter. The Packers tried two replacements: rookie Travis Glover, who was pulled after committing three penalties, and Kadeem Telfort, who finished the game but also added a holding penalty.

In total, the Packers were penalized for five holding calls, tying their most in a game since Matt LaFleur became head coach in 2019.

The Packers were down 16-3 when wide receiver Jayden Reed left in the third quarter due to a shoulder injury and didn’t return. After the game, Reed confirmed that he had dislocated his shoulder. With Christian Watson already out with a torn ACL the previous week, Love was left without his top three receivers by the end of the game.

The Packers also lost center Josh Myers in the fourth quarter due to what appeared to be a serious knee injury. However, Myers later said it wasn’t as bad as it seemed, although he couldn’t return to the game. He mentioned that the injury might be a hairline fracture in his lower leg. Myers also revealed that he played the second half of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

“So frustrating, man,” said Myers, who will become a free agent this offseason. “It’s such a long year, there’s so much that goes into it that it’s just incredibly disappointing.”

“Just felt like we didn’t have any rhythm, felt like we were just shooting ourselves in the foot. We were getting penalties, we were turning the ball over. All the stuff you can’t do against a team like that, you can’t do.”

On defense, the Packers lost lineman Devonte Wyatt, one of their top run stoppers, due to a lower leg injury in the first quarter. Despite solid defensive play, they couldn’t generate turnovers and allowed Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to rush for 119 yards on 25 carries.

Jordan Love throws a pass in the 1st half

Love’s second season as the starter ended with a poor performance. He tied a career-high with three interceptions and became the first Packers quarterback to throw three interceptions without a touchdown in a playoff game.

When asked if he made progress this season, which began after signing a four-year, $220 million contract extension, Love said, “That’s a good question.”

“I think there’s obviously areas that I improved on, that the team improved on,” he added. “And there’s some stuff I want to clean up, be better at, for sure.”

This marked the end of a season in which the Packers won 11 games but went 0-6 against the NFC’s top three teams: the Eagles, Lions, and Vikings, losing twice to each.

“All those games, we were right there,” said Packers running back Josh Jacobs, who had 121 total yards and a touchdown. “My biggest message this offseason — from the coaches to the players — is how do we take that step? We figure out how to take that step, ain’t nobody gonna be able to f— with us in this league.”

In many of those games, the Packers were hurt by slow starts, just like the one they had against the Eagles. They finished with four turnovers, starting with a fumble by Keisean Nixon on the opening kickoff.

“I think that’s going to be a great reflection point this offseason because obviously, if we had the answers, it wouldn’t have been a problem,” said LaFleur, whose playoff record dropped to 3-5. “And for it to come up multiple times is disappointing.”

Christian Watson’s 2024 Season Cut Short by ACL Tear, Uncertainty Surrounds Recovery

Christian Watson’s 2024 season with the Green Bay Packers has been cut short due to a serious knee injury. Reports from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reveal that Watson is believed to have torn his ACL, along with sustaining additional damage. This injury will end his season prematurely, and it creates uncertainty regarding his recovery and potential return for the 2025 season. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed the injury on Monday.

The injury occurred during the Packers’ loss to the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field on Sunday, where Watson was carted off the field. This marks a troubling turn for Watson, who has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career, including a significant hamstring issue in 2023 that limited him to just nine games. Additionally, Watson faced a knee problem earlier in the 2024 season, which affected his performance during a Week 16 victory over the Saints and caused him to miss the following game against Minnesota.

Before his injury, Watson had made an impact in the 2024 season with 29 receptions, 620 yards, and two touchdowns in 15 games. His absence will be felt by the Packers as they hope for a strong playoff run. Watson’s injury has now forced him to the sidelines, where he will need to focus on his recovery and rehabilitation for the foreseeable future.

As the Packers push toward the playoffs, Watson’s role will now shift from on-field contributor to an observer, with his attention focused on the long process of recovery. The timeline for his return remains uncertain, and he will have to work diligently to prepare for the 2025 season. His injury adds another chapter to a career already marred by injury setbacks.
