The New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers will face off again on Thursday night in Philadelphia, marking the third meeting between the two teams in just two weeks.

The Flyers won the first game 5-3 on January 16, but the Islanders have been on a strong run since, winning all five games they’ve played, including a 3-1 victory in the rematch last Friday.

Now, the two teams will meet again for the final match of their three-game January series. Their last matchup of the season is scheduled for April 12 in Philadelphia. Both teams are looking for more wins as they remain behind other teams in the standings.

Despite their recent success, the Islanders are still in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, just one point behind the Flyers.

The Islanders have allowed only seven goals in their last five games, with another solid defensive performance in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

“On this stretch, we’ve gotten (back) to our brand of hockey,” said Islanders captain Anders Lee. “We executed (our style) well. It feels natural, the way it’s come together.”

Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves in the game, and Simon Holmstrom scored twice and added an assist. Bo Horvat also scored, bringing his total to eight goals in the last 10 games.

“Ilya was outstanding in that game,” said Islanders coach Patrick Roy, highlighting Sorokin’s performance.

The Islanders scored four goals in the third period to turn a close game into a dominant win. However, Roy believes there’s still room for improvement.

Philadelphia Flyers celebrates after scoring

“How many times have I said (that) you don’t need to be perfect to win hockey games?” Roy said. “That’s exactly what we did. We gave ourselves a chance tonight.”

Meanwhile, the Flyers struggled in their last game on Wednesday, suffering a 5-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Samuel Ersson allowed four goals before being pulled halfway through the game. Coach John Tortorella said after the game that the Flyers struggled with killing penalties.

“We still think we’re there. It just got away from us with not being able to kill penalties,” Tortorella said.

Tortorella confirmed that Ivan Fedotov, who replaced Ersson, will start in goal against the Islanders. He expressed the hope that playing again so soon will help the team move past their loss.

“That’s all we’re looking for,” Tortorella said.

The Flyers have lost three of their last four games, managing just two goals in those three defeats. One of those losses came in the most recent game against the Islanders, where Tyson Foerster scored first but the Islanders came back with goals from Brock Nelson, earning a 3-1 win.

“We got beat tonight, fair and square,” said Flyers forward Scott Laughton. “We’re lucky that we get another division game (Thursday), but we got beat tonight. It’s a good hockey team, but we need to be better at this time of year.”

According to Marco D’Amico of RG, the NHL’s profits for the 2023-24 season were much higher than expected. As a result, players are set to get back the full 6% of their escrow payments, along with an additional 1.5 to 2%. This means players will receive about 101.5 to 102% of their salaries for the 2023-24 season.

The league has recovered financially after struggling during the pandemic years, and both players and teams are expected to benefit from this improvement.

Escrow is a system where a portion of player salaries is held back to make sure there is a 50/50 split of hockey-related revenue between the players and the owners.

For the 2024-25 season, the NHL’s salary cap ceiling is set at $88 million. It was originally projected to rise to around $92-93 million for the 2025-26 season. However, it is now expected to increase even more.

Prominent NHL agent Allan Walsh recently reported that the salary cap ceiling will go up to $97 million for the 2025-26 season, marking a 10% increase.

This is especially good news for the New York Islanders.

With the current $88 million salary cap, the Islanders would have struggled to sign all their pending free agents if the salary cap stayed flat or increased only slightly next season.

New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks

Some of the Islanders’ key free agents include Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmieri, Simon Holmstrom, Maxim Tsyplakov, Noah Dobson, and Alexander Romanov, whose combined cap hit is currently $19.3 million.

Nelson and Palmieri, both 33 years old, are set to become unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Dobson, Romanov, Holmstrom, and Tsyplakov are all restricted free agents but are eligible for arbitration.

Though these six players have had mixed performances this season, their combined cap hit for their next contracts is likely to rise, possibly reaching $25-30 million.

It’s still unclear whether the Islanders will trade Nelson or Palmieri before the 2025 trade deadline, but a full rebuild seems unlikely.

Even if general manager Lou Lamoriello decides to trade one or two players, the Islanders are expected to be active in the free-agent market starting July 1.

The Islanders have 14 players under contract for next season, not including Marcus Hogberg’s $775,000, which brings their total to $66.66 million.

With big names like Mikko Rantanen, Mitch Marner, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Sam Bennett expected to be available as free agents, the Islanders now have the financial flexibility to make a major signing without having to sacrifice many players from their current roster.

Although no official numbers have been confirmed by the league, recent reports suggest the outlook for the Islanders is very promising.

The Boston Bruins are back from a three-game road trip and will host the New York Islanders for their first home game of the 2025 calendar year on Sunday evening.

Both teams are looking to break three-game losing streaks after both suffered defeats to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the last three nights. The Bruins lost 6-4 in Toronto on Saturday to start a back-to-back set, while the Islanders lost 2-1 to the Leafs on Thursday in the second game of a home-and-home series.

In Toronto, the Bruins came back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to tie the game, but it wasn’t enough against the high-powered Leafs offense led by a Matthew Knies hat trick and five-point performances from Knies and Mitch Marner.

“It’s difficult in this league to play catch-up hockey, but it was 2-2 going into the third (period) and we had two breakdowns that they capitalized on,” Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco said. “When you get three or four (goals), you hope to come away with at least one or two points and that didn’t happen, so we’re disappointed with that.”

Boston hasn’t won since Dec. 28 against the Columbus Blue Jackets, with losses on the road to the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers (3-1 and 2-1) before Saturday’s defeat.

Despite the loss, Boston showed signs of breaking out of a recent scoring slump, as they had scored just eight goals in their previous four games.

Against the Maple Leafs, David Pastrnak scored his first multi-goal game of the season, reaching 15 goals with a pair in the third period, tying captain Brad Marchand for the team lead.

New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues

“Hopefully it … gives guys confidence, myself included, that we can start helping out the team here and getting some more goals,” forward Trent Frederic said.

Although the Islanders have only won three of their last 10 games, coach Patrick Roy believes his team is playing well recently. That includes their most recent loss to Toronto, which came on a tiebreaking goal with 2:59 left in regulation.

“Overall I wouldn’t change a thing in our game, we’d love to see just better shots, the quality of our shots, that’s all,” Roy said. “The guys are working and playing hard. … I have no complaints other than not scoring goals. If we get those goals, it’ll turn around for us, I still believe in that.”

In fact, the Islanders’ last three losses were decided by a total of four goals.

With the team moving closer to the bottom of the competitive Eastern Conference, finding ways to win is crucial.

“I think right now I’d take a horrible game out of our team to win a hockey game,” forward Mathew Barzal said. “That’s really the only thing that matters right now is to win a hockey game. That’s really the only thing that matters right now is wins and losses.”

New York’s injury report still isn’t clear, despite Barzal, Anthony Duclair, and Adam Pelech returning around the holiday break. With Semyon Varlamov (lower body) still out, Ilya Sorokin has started 14 of the past 15 games in goal.

Dennis Cholowski will be added to the defensive pairings for Sunday, as Isaiah George remains day-to-day after taking an elbow to the head from Toronto’s Max Domi during Thursday’s game. George is now in concussion protocol.

Marchand and Pavel Zacha each scored twice in the Bruins’ 6-3 win over the Islanders in Elmont, N.Y., on Nov. 27, their first meeting of the season. Brock Nelson had two goals and one assist for the Islanders in that game.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will have to wait a little longer for Auston Matthews to return as they continue their push for the Stanley Cup.

On the other hand, the New York Islanders are running out of time to start winning and avoid a possible breakup of the team that made it to the NHL semifinals in 2020-21.

The Maple Leafs and Islanders will wrap up a home-and-home series on Thursday night, with Toronto visiting New York in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams had a break on Wednesday after Toronto beat the Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday. David Kampf, Steven Lorentz, and John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs in the win.

With the victory, the Maple Leafs tied the Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division and improved to 2-3-0 in the games Matthews has missed due to an upper-body injury. Matthews has been out since he aggravated the injury in a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20. He’s missed 14 of Toronto’s 38 games this season.

While Matthews will not play Thursday, he did practice with the team on Wednesday and hopes to see more improvement in the coming days. However, he admitted that he wasn’t sure if he would fully recover even with more rest.

“It’s tricky with these things sometimes,” Matthews said. “It’s a physical sport. It’s a contact sport. Things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control. Just try to manage it as best as I can, and that we can, and you just go from there.”

The Maple Leafs have had a hard time replacing Matthews’ high level of play. He scored 69 goals last season, the most by an NHL player since Mario Lemieux’s 69 in the 1995-96 season.

Toronto had 118 goals as of Wednesday, which ranked 13th in the NHL, down from leading the Eastern Conference last season with 298 goals. Without Matthews, the Maple Leafs have scored three goals or fewer in nine games, including four of their last five.

For the Islanders, offense has been a problem even with the return of first-liners Mathew Barzal and Anthony Duclair in December. The two players have missed a combined 49 games due to injuries but have scored just one goal each in the five games they’ve played together since Dec. 21. In that stretch, the Islanders have a 2-3-0 record.

New York scored six goals to beat Toronto 6-4 on Dec. 21 and another six in a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. However, they’ve only scored four goals in their three losses since then.

The Islanders, who had 102 goals as of Wednesday, were tied for the seventh fewest in the NHL. They have won back-to-back games only twice this season and ended the year five points out of a playoff spot.

If their struggles continue into 2025, free agents like Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri, as well as Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (who each have one year left on their contracts after this season), could become trade targets for teams looking to add to their roster.

“We’re worried about just winning games and clawing ourselves back into it and not thinking about the opposite,” said Nelson. “We want to get off to a good start in the new year. We’ve been talking about getting on a roll and just playing good, solid hockey and getting a good stretch of wins to get ourselves back more in the mix, so that’s the main focus.”

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for the Islanders, who have lost three of their last four games. Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves.

The Islanders defeated the Maple Leafs 6-3 in Toronto on Dec. 21. The Maple Leafs will play the Islanders again on Thursday.

The game started with Nylander passing from behind the net to Kampf, who scored at 17:54 of the first period. The play started with a blocked shot by Toronto’s Christopher Tanev, leading to a rush that set up Nylander for a shot.

The Islanders had a goal early in the second period, but it was waved off after a video review showed the play was offside.

The Maple Leafs had a goal disallowed at 3:56 due to goaltender interference.

Pageau tied the game at 11:59 of the second period after receiving a pass from Noah Dobson. Toronto responded quickly, with Ryan Reaves passing to Lorentz, who scored a wrist shot just 16 seconds later.

Sorokin made key saves to keep the Islanders in the game, stopping shots from Nylander and Matthew Knies in the third period. Pageau later hit the crossbar at 13:28.

The Maple Leafs got a power play at 14:57, and while Brock Nelson had a breakaway, Woll made the save.

With Sorokin pulled for an extra attacker, Dobson was penalized for tripping at 19:17. Sorokin stayed off the ice, and Tavares scored into the empty net at 19:27.

Toronto placed Auston Matthews (upper-body injury) on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 20 for roster management. Pontus Holmberg and Oliver Ekman-Larsson missed the game due to illness.

Sidney Crosby, the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has added another significant achievement to his career by becoming the franchise’s all-time assists leader. On Sunday, during a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders, Crosby surpassed the previous record held by Mario Lemieux. He earned his 1,034th career assist by setting up teammate Michael Bunting, which was met with a loud standing ovation from the crowd at Pittsburgh’s arena.

With this milestone, Crosby now sits at 12th place in NHL history for career assists. His achievement is particularly impressive considering only three players—Ray Bourque, Wayne Gretzky, and Steve Yzerman—have recorded more assists with a single team. Crosby’s ability to reach this mark is a testament to his longevity and skill on the ice.

After the game, Crosby reflected on the accomplishment, expressing that he appreciates these milestones more as time passes. He acknowledged the influence of past players and how proud he is to be part of such an esteemed group. His humility was evident as he spoke about the privilege of following in the footsteps of players like Lemieux.

Lemieux himself congratulated Crosby on his achievement, calling him an “amazing player” and expressing how fortunate the team is to have him in Pittsburgh. Crosby, 37, has played 1,310 regular-season games, far surpassing Lemieux’s 915 games. When asked about what he planned to do with the puck from his record-breaking assist, Crosby shared that he would likely give it to his father to keep as a keepsake.

The team dominated throughout, scoring twice in the first period, three times in the second, and twice more in the third. The win came as a much-needed boost of morale before their holiday break, with the Sabres now looking ahead to their next matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Rasmus Dahlin, the Sabres’ captain, was a standout performer, tallying four assists—the most by any NHL defenseman this season and the first such feat for a Buffalo defenseman since 2008. While Dahlin acknowledged the satisfaction of the victory, he stressed that it was merely a step in a longer process to rebuild confidence and consistency. The win marked an emotional turning point after a month of frustration and near-misses.

The team’s struggles since November 23, when they last won against San Jose, were marked by heartbreak, including six one-goal losses and a historic blown lead against Colorado. Sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 28 points, the Sabres faced mounting pressure and disappointment. However, their performance against the Islanders demonstrated resilience, with a focused, full-team effort earning them their first seven-goal game of the season.

Key contributions came from players like Jason Zucker, who scored the third goal and highlighted the team’s determination to overcome overthinking and execute a complete game. The Sabres’ dominance was evident, as they silenced the Islanders’ home crowd and even drew boos from frustrated fans at UBS Arena. This victory, combined with a spirited effort in a recent 3-1 loss to Boston, showcased the team’s potential when playing at their best.

Under the leadership of veteran coach Lindy Ruff, who returned to Buffalo this season, the Sabres maintained a sense of purpose throughout their challenging losing streak. Ruff, whose long career includes a previous tenure with the team from 1997 to 2013, praised his players for their focus and determination. Team leader Tage Thompson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of staying committed to the game plan and working hard. As the Sabres reset after the break, they aim to build on this victory and reignite their playoff ambitions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins showed over the four weeks leading up to the NHL’s holiday break that their most successful era might not be over just yet.

In contrast, the New York Islanders have not given much evidence that they can extend the team’s most successful run in decades.

The two teams, heading in different directions, will face off Saturday night when the Penguins visit the Islanders in Elmont, N.Y., to start a home-and-home series.

Both teams played on Monday night, with the Penguins continuing their strong play with a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, while the Islanders were beaten 7-1 by the Buffalo Sabres.

The win was the ninth in the last 13 games (9-3-1) for Pittsburgh, who since Thanksgiving has risen to fourth place in the Metropolitan Division and is just one point behind the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

Their surge began on Nov. 27 when they were last in the Metropolitan and five points out of a wild-card spot after a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

The Penguins have scored five or more goals in seven of their last 13 games, after struggling to score four or fewer goals in 18 consecutive games prior to the win over the Canucks.

Key players Bryan Rust, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, who were all part of the Penguins’ Stanley Cup-winning teams in 2016 and 2017, have scored 17 goals since Nov. 27. The trio had just 12 goals in the team’s first 23 games.

Sidney Crosby, a three-time Cup champion, has 16 assists in the last 13 games after having just 13 assists in the first 23 games.

“I think you learn a lot about your group when you struggle and you get to a bit of a funk — can you bring yourself back out of it?” Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas said during a broadcast on Monday. “I think we obviously dug in, starting with that game against Vancouver. I’m proud of the group for the way they responded.”

The Islanders had the full holiday break to reflect on their latest disappointing loss. On Monday, they allowed a season-high number of goals when the Sabres took a 5-0 lead on their way to ending their 13-game losing streak.

The loss continued a tough season for the Islanders, who fell to last place in the Metropolitan Division with the defeat. Despite this, New York still has 11 players remaining from the teams that made back-to-back trips to the league semifinals in 2020 and 2021.

The Islanders also have 17 players left from squads that overcame slow starts in each of the previous two seasons to make the playoffs. However, they are running out of time to make a similar comeback.

The Islanders are currently five points behind the final wild-card spot and have only won back-to-back games twice. They are 6-10-4 against the 15 teams that were outside playoff spots as of Friday.

“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” Islanders center Bo Horvat said on Monday. “It’s not going to be an easy run. It’s not going to be an easy road to get back to where we want to get, but we have no one to blame but ourselves. We put ourselves in this situation, obviously.”

Backup goalie Jonas Johansson stopped 36 shots for his first shutout since October 2023.

Kucherov scored early but was ejected late in the first period after a kneeing incident on Matthew Tkachuk, who needed help to get to the dressing room but returned to the game later.

The New York Rangers secured a crucial 3-2 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Saturday, edging three points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division. The victory, fueled by a game-winning goal from Vincent Trocheck, also set a franchise record with 54 regular-season wins. Igor Shesterkin played a pivotal role with 34 saves in regulation and two more in the shootout, outdueling Islanders’ goalie Ilya Sorokin. Despite the loss, the Islanders earned a valuable point, further solidifying their playoff hopes.

While the Rangers celebrated the win, the Islanders remained optimistic, knowing their playoff chances were still strong despite their six-game win streak being broken. Going into the evening, the Islanders could have clinched a playoff spot if Detroit and Washington lost. While both teams won, the Islanders’ postseason berth seemed inevitable unless a remarkable series of events occurred. Ryan Pulock acknowledged the importance of securing a point in a game that had the intensity of playoff hockey.

The Rangers had to fight back after a rough second period, where they lost the lead and struggled to generate offense. Their usual resilience came to the forefront in the third period. The Islanders had a golden opportunity to increase their lead when Artemi Panarin took down Adam Pelech on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot. Shesterkin’s glove save preserved the 2-1 scoreline and set the stage for the Rangers’ comeback.

Panarin later tied the game with a wrist shot, following Shesterkin’s crucial saves. The game continued into a thrilling overtime period, where both teams traded chances, including a dramatic save by Shesterkin on Mathew Barzal. In the shootout, Shesterkin denied Kyle Palmieri and Brock Nelson, while Panarin and Trocheck scored for the Rangers, securing the win. This marked a significant bounce-back performance after their loss to the Islanders earlier in the week.

For the Islanders, their inability to capitalize on power plays was a key factor in their defeat. They allowed a shorthanded goal to Braden Schneider during an extended five-on-four power play in the second period. Although they regained the lead thanks to two goals from Brock Nelson, the Islanders’ inability to threaten on the power play ultimately cost them the game. With Noah Dobson’s injury and their six-game win streak broken, the Islanders must avoid chaos to secure a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Rangers’ victory restored their momentum as they head into the final game of the regular season with confidence.

The Chicago Blackhawks secured a thrilling 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday, led by Connor Bedard’s clutch goal in the final minute and Arvid Soderblom’s impressive 30 saves. The win came as a much-needed boost for Chicago, which had struggled recently, losing seven of their previous eight games, including a 4-1 defeat to New Jersey the night before. Teuvo Teravainen contributed significantly with a goal and two assists, while Taylor Hall, Ilya Mikheyev, and Connor Murphy also found the back of the net.

Bedard’s decisive goal, his seventh of the season, broke a 3-3 tie late in the third period. His low-slot shot slipped just past Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who made 18 saves but couldn’t recover in time to stop the puck. This moment marked a standout performance for Bedard, highlighting his value as a key playmaker for Chicago. Murphy sealed the victory with an empty-netter, his first goal of the season, as the Blackhawks successfully closed out the game.

The Islanders, despite battling injuries, showed resilience throughout the match. Simon Holmstrom, Ryan Pulock, and Noah Dobson scored for New York, with Dobson tying the game early in the third period. However, the team missed the presence of Bo Horvat, sidelined due to a lower-body injury. New York, now on a three-game road trip, struggled on special teams, going 0 for 4 on the power play against a Chicago penalty kill that has been flawless over its last nine games.

Chicago’s performance reflected marked improvements in critical areas. The team capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play with Teravainen’s goal, and defenseman Alex Vlasic added two assists in a solid showing. The Blackhawks demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity and execute late in the game, a skill they had lacked in recent outings. The win also snapped New York’s recent dominance, as the Islanders had defeated Chicago 5-4 just days earlier.

Looking ahead, both teams have little time to rest. The Islanders continue their road trip against the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Blackhawks remain at home to face the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. For Chicago, Sunday’s victory may serve as a pivotal turning point as they seek consistency and momentum in their upcoming games.

Connor Bedard delivered a decisive performance for the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring the game-winning goal with just 54 seconds left in regulation to clinch a 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday at the United Center. After Ryan Donato’s wraparound attempt was deflected by Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin, Bedard collected the loose puck and fired a one-timer that found its way through Sorokin’s pads. The rookie phenom now boasts seven points (two goals, five assists) in his last five games, continuing his impressive form.

Teuvo Teravainen was instrumental in the Blackhawks’ victory, contributing a goal and two assists, while Connor Murphy added an empty-netter in the dying moments to seal the result. Chicago’s young roster showed remarkable composure, especially under pressure in the final period. Coach Anders Sorensen praised the team’s maturity and ability to execute in critical moments, emphasizing the role of younger players in the win. Arvid Soderblom made 30 saves to help Chicago snap a two-game losing streak.

The Islanders, coming off a win against the Blackhawks just days prior, struggled with defensive lapses that proved costly. Ryan Pulock, Simon Holmstrom, and Noah Dobson scored for New York, but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent the loss. Mathew Barzal, back in action after missing 21 games due to injury, felt the Islanders deserved a better outcome, citing defensive breakdowns as a key factor in the defeat.

The game was a rollercoaster of momentum swings. Chicago opened the scoring with Ilya Mikheyev’s goal in the first period, but Pulock quickly equalized. Taylor Hall restored the Blackhawks’ lead late in the period, only for Holmstrom to tie it again early in the second. Teravainen then put Chicago ahead on a power play, but Dobson responded early in the third, setting the stage for Bedard’s late-game heroics.

Despite the loss, the Islanders showed improvement in their defensive structure during the second and third periods, according to coach Patrick Roy. However, they couldn’t contain Chicago’s opportunistic offense. For the Blackhawks, the win marked a critical turning point, fueled by standout performances from Bedard and Teravainen, as they demonstrated resilience and the ability to capitalize in clutch situations.

Sebastian Aho scored a goal and had an assist, while Andrei Svechnikov, Jordan Martinook, and Tyson Jost also found the net. The Hurricanes won back-to-back games for the first time this month.

Shayne Gostisbehere contributed two assists, helping Carolina bounce back from a 4-3 loss on the road to the Islanders on December 7. The Hurricanes completed a 3-1-0 homestand, which will be their last home game until after Christmas.

The Islanders lost their second consecutive game, bringing their record in December to 3-4-1. They failed to score on their only power-play chance, which came in the first period.

Ilya Sorokin made 19 saves on 23 shots through the first two periods, before Marcus Hogberg stopped six shots in the third period. This was Hogberg’s second game of the season.

Kochetkov, who did not play in Sunday’s win over Columbus, stopped nine shots in the third period to earn his ninth career shutout.

Svechnikov scored the first goal just 35 seconds into the game’s first power play at 5:47 of the first period. It was his 12th goal of the season, with three of those coming against the Islanders on the power play.

Less than three minutes later, Martinook scored off a rebound from Jordan Staal’s shot. Martinook, with eight goals, has scored in two straight games.

The Hurricanes have outscored opponents 34-21 in the first period this season, while the Islanders have been outscored 27-22 in the opening 20 minutes.

Jost, who scored his second goal of the season, and Aho, who scored with 16 seconds left in the second period, each contributed to the win. Aho has scored in back-to-back games after an eight-game goal drought, bringing his total to nine goals for the season.

Despite outshooting Carolina 32-29, the Islanders came up short in the game.

The Carolina Hurricanes have been working through some scoring challenges lately, but they hope they have found their rhythm again.

The Hurricanes will finish a four-game homestand on Tuesday night when they face the New York Islanders in Raleigh, N.C.

Carolina secured their third win in the last eight games on Sunday, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1.

“We’ve been trying to figure it out a little bit. We’d have a good game and then an off game,” said Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook. “That (Sunday) was more of how it looks and how we play and everybody was pulling on the same rope. Hopefully, we can build off that because we did a lot of good things.”

Both Martinook and teammate William Carrier ended goal droughts that had lasted 13 games in the win against Columbus.

“We had a lot of scoring chances before and they weren’t going in,” Carrier said.

Sebastian Aho, the team’s top scorer last season, had gone eight games without scoring, but he broke the drought with a short-handed goal to put his team up 1-0.

While some Hurricanes players ended their scoring struggles, Martin Necas kept up his strong performance. He became just the second player in franchise history to record 30 assists in the first 30 games of a season, joining Ron Francis (1982-83). Necas has collected seven points in the past six games.

The Hurricanes might return to goalie Pyotr Kochetkov, even though Dustin Tokarski was the winner in his Carolina debut on Sunday.

The Islanders had won three of their last four games before beginning a three-game road trip with a 5-3 loss at Chicago on Sunday.

“I think we need to be a little bit more consistent,” said Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson. “We have to reset. Obviously a tough game on Tuesday.”

However, Islanders captain Anders Lee felt there was no need for discouragement after their recent game.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win a hockey game,” Lee said. New York will look to improve their power play after going 0-for-4 against Chicago.

A factor could be the return of some players to the lineup. Center Mathew Barzal played on Sunday for the first time since late October, logging two shots on goal in nearly 21 minutes of ice time. Barzal said he aims to perform better on Tuesday.

“That’s the key, just moving on,” Barzal said. “We just got to find a way to get these games.”

Islanders center Bo Horvat missed Sunday’s game with a lower-body injury, and his status for Tuesday’s game will be determined later.

The Islanders defeated the Hurricanes 4-3 at home on Dec. 7, with three points from Jean-Gabriel Pageau, despite two goals from Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov. Ilya Sorokin made 28 saves for New York. Kochetkov took the loss after allowing four goals on 25 shots.

Pageau has not scored in three of the four games since the first meeting with Carolina. After Tuesday’s game, the Hurricanes will head out on the road for their next four games.

The Los Angeles Kings secured a 3-1 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday, extending their winning streak to six games. Adrian Kempe played a key role, contributing a goal and an assist, while Kevin Fiala and Mikey Anderson also found the back of the net. Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper was solid, making 19 saves in their first game of a seven-game road trip. Despite some turnover issues in the second period, the Kings’ strong start in the first proved pivotal to their victory.

The Islanders struggled early, particularly in the first period, where they were outshot 12-3. Despite being down 2-0, Anders Lee managed to get the Islanders on the board midway through the second period with a quick shot through Kuemper’s legs. Ilya Sorokin kept his team competitive with 27 saves, including key stops on Phillip Danault, while the Islanders fought to stay in the game. Islanders coach Patrick Roy praised the team’s ability to stay close but lamented their inability to finish key chances.

Kempe opened the scoring late in the first period after a strong setup from Anze Kopitar and Trevor Moore. The Kings’ line of Kempe, Kopitar, and Moore showed great chemistry, dominating play early. Early in the second, Fiala doubled the Kings’ lead with a wrist shot from the high slot, using a screen to beat Sorokin glove side. The Islanders responded well after their early struggles, generating momentum and creating multiple chances in the second half.

New York had opportunities to tie the game in the third period but couldn’t convert. Lee’s earlier goal gave the Islanders hope, and they continued to push, hitting two posts, including a shot from Noah Dobson. Bo Horvat came close to leveling the score in the final five minutes on a breakaway but was denied by Kuemper. Sorokin also shined, making clutch saves to keep the game within reach, but the Islanders couldn’t capitalize on their late pressure.

With 14 seconds remaining, Mikey Anderson secured the Kings’ victory with an empty-net goal, sealing the 3-1 result. The Islanders showed resilience after their poor start but fell short due to missed opportunities and a dominant Kings performance in the first period. Kuemper’s steady goaltending and strong contributions from Kempe and Fiala proved decisive for Los Angeles.

Noah Dobson, Bo Horvat, and Maxim Tsyplakov scored in a quick 2:19 stretch for the New York Islanders, who held off a late push from the Chicago Blackhawks to win 5-4 on Thursday in Elmont, N.Y.

Dennis Cholowski and Simon Holmstrom also scored for the Islanders in the second period. Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders’ goalie, made 26 saves in the win. Holmstrom and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (three assists) both had three-point games, and Dobson finished with two points.

For the Blackhawks, Connor Bedard scored in the first period, TJ Brodie added a goal in the third, and Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice in the final 1:10 of the third period. Bedard and Alex Vlasic each had two assists. Chicago’s goalie Arvid Soderblom stopped just 14 of 19 shots before being replaced by Drew Commesso, who saved both shots he faced in his NHL debut.

Bedard’s goal came with 3:13 left in the first period after a cross-checking penalty on Cholowski led to a power play. Kyle Palmieri almost intercepted a pass from Vlasic, but Ryan Donato collected the puck and passed to Bedard, who skated around Islanders defenders Ryan Pulock and Alexander Romanov before scoring.

Cholowski made up for the penalty by scoring at 6:59 of the second period, beating Soderblom glove-side after a power play expired. Holmstrom gave the Islanders the lead at 5:54 of the second, skating past Blackhawks defenseman Kevin Korchinski and shooting past Soderblom, who was screened by Brodie and Pageau.

The Islanders started the third period strong with Dobson’s goal at 5:39. He skated into the left faceoff circle after receiving a pass from Brock Nelson and fired a shot past Soderblom. Horvat followed with a goal 57 seconds later, taking a pass from Pageau and shooting over Soderblom’s stick.

Tsyplakov added another goal at 7:58, putting in the rebound of a shot from Palmieri. Brodie answered for the Blackhawks with his first goal of the season at 11:04, shooting under Sorokin’s glove. Bertuzzi then scored twice in the last minute of the game, once with 1:10 remaining and again with just 9.7 seconds left.

Anders Lee scored for the Islanders in the second period, but their two-game winning streak came to an end. Goalie Ilya Sorokin made 27 saves for New York.

Kempe and Fiala’s goals were the result of persistence. Kempe opened the scoring with 6:09 left in the first period, capping a long sequence. Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov’s shot went wide, but the puck ended up with Trevor Moore and Maxim Tsyplakov, who fought for it until Moore took control.

Moore passed it to Anze Kopitar, who worked behind the net before sending it to an open Kempe, who scored from close range.

The Kings doubled their lead 3:09 into the second period. Joel Edmundson tried to get a shot off in front of the Islanders’ crease but couldn’t. He picked up the loose puck and passed it to Fiala, who fired a shot from the left faceoff circle that went past Sorokin’s glove as he was screened by Hutton and Samuel Helenius.

The Islanders responded with a goal with 10:13 remaining in the second period. Kyle Palmieri’s shot into the crease deflected off Lee’s stick, and he quickly spun around Gavrikov to send the puck under Kuemper’s stick.

New York outshot Los Angeles 7-5 in the third period and nearly tied the game twice in the final seven minutes, with shots from Noah Dobson and Bo Horvat hitting the post. Sorokin was pulled with about 90 seconds left, but New York couldn’t get a shot before Anderson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 14 seconds remaining.

The last time the New York Islanders won at least three games in a row, it helped them make the playoffs.

While a playoff spot isn’t guaranteed for the Islanders yet, a third straight win — especially against the hottest team in the NHL — would continue to improve their outlook, which seemed bleak just a few days ago.

The Islanders will try to build on a strong weekend when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night in Elmont, N.Y., in a game between teams from different conferences.

Both teams had the day off on Monday after picking up wins this past weekend. The Islanders won their second game in 24 hours by defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-2 on Sunday, while the Kings extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

The Islanders won despite taking a season-low 13 shots. But New York, which has one of the worst power plays in the NHL, scored twice on the power play, and goalie Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves.

“I think we were good in the right moments,” said Islanders left winger Anders Lee, who scored the first power-play goal. “We had to grind it out. It was an ugly one (Sunday) for us. It had to be ugly.”

The two-game winning streak is only the second of the season for the Islanders, who beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Saturday. New York hadn’t won back-to-back games since they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins and Senators on Nov. 5 and 7.

These back-to-back wins came after New York had lost 10 of 13 games (3-5-5), which put them in last place in the Metropolitan Division.

Heading into Monday, the Islanders were tied for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with the New York Rangers, though the Rangers had three games in hand.

“This weekend was a good step for us,” said Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock.

The Islanders haven’t won more than two straight games since April 1-11, when they won six in a row to rise to third place in the Metropolitan Division. They clinched a playoff spot just four days later.

On the other hand, the Kings have found consistency this season, with their five-game winning streak lifting them to second place in the Pacific Division. This is the longest active winning streak in the NHL and their first such streak since they won five straight from Nov. 16-25, 2023.

Los Angeles has only had two losing streaks this season and is 7-2-0 since losing back-to-back games to the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 11 and 13.

The Kings have been strong during their current run, beating the top three teams in the Central Division: the Wild, Winnipeg Jets, and Dallas Stars. Los Angeles outscored those teams 11-4 overall — including 7-1 in the last five periods since the Stars took a 2-0 lead in the first period last Wednesday.

“We like the challenge of playing against top teams,” said Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper, who returned to action Saturday after missing eight games due to a lower-body injury. He made 22 saves in the win over the Wild. “You know you have to be at your best. You need everybody, so those are fun as a group and good measuring sticks.”

Adrian Kempe scored his team-leading 13th goal in the win against the Wild.

Anders Lee and Kyle MacLean each scored once in the first period, and Bo Horvat added an empty-net goal with 51 seconds remaining. Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves in the win.

For the Senators, Adam Gaudette scored in the first period and Josh Norris added a goal in the second. Ottawa’s two-game winning streak came to an end, with goalie Anton Forsberg making nine saves.

Gaudette gave the Senators a brief lead 5:37 into the game after finishing an end-to-end rush. Noah Gregor passed the puck to Gaudette, who scored past Sorokin. The Islanders responded with a power-play goal by Lee at 12:27, following a rebound of Noah Dobson’s shot.

MacLean put the Islanders ahead again 2:21 later when Dennis Cholowski passed the puck into the crease, and it deflected off MacLean’s stick past Forsberg.

Norris tied the game 37 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal, assisted by Drake Batherson. Batherson made a no-look pass from the crease to Norris, who scored in the upper-right corner.

A tripping penalty on Norris set up Palmieri’s game-winner. Lee passed the puck from the goal line to Palmieri, who shot from the left faceoff circle, beating Forsberg. Forsberg was pulled from the net with less than three minutes left, but Ottawa couldn’t get a shot on goal before Horvat sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

The New York Islanders have been knocked out by the Carolina Hurricanes in the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hurricanes have a chance to make it even harder for the Islanders to reach the playoffs next spring.

The struggling Islanders will try to end their losing streak when they face the Hurricanes in their first matchup of the season in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams had a break on Friday after playing at home on Thursday. The Islanders lost 5-2 to the Seattle Kraken, while the Hurricanes won 5-3 against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Islanders’ 18th loss of the season, which was the worst in the Eastern Conference, might have been their most frustrating. The Kraken were ahead 4-0 after two periods, even though they had only 13 shots.

New York, which has been outscored 45-24 in the third period and overtime this season, managed to score two goals to reduce the gap, but Jaden Schwartz sealed the win for Seattle with an empty-net goal with 2:40 left.

A crowd of 14,877, more than 2,000 people short of the UBS Arena’s 17,255-seat capacity, was quiet until they booed the Islanders off the ice after their worst loss of the season.

New York has lost 10 of their last 13 games (3-5-5), falling to last place in the Metropolitan Division. However, they ended Thursday just two points behind the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Seattle Kraken and Carolina Hurricanes

“I understand our fans were (ticked) off,” said Islanders coach Patrick Roy. “I’d be (ticked) off as well. Nobody was very happy, and they deserve to not be happy. But at the same time, our guys were trying. We just didn’t have our best game. We got outplayed, and they played better than us.”

The mood for the Hurricanes was better after they ended a season-worst three-game losing streak with a win over the Avalanche on Thursday.

Seth Jarvis scored the go-ahead goal 4:09 into the second period, and Jack Roslovic made it 3-1 just 2:32 later. Jarvis’ goal was the Hurricanes’ first lead since their previous win, a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Nov. 27.

The Hurricanes, who had been outscored 16-5 during their losing streak, limited the Avalanche to only 14 shots in the first 54 minutes of the game. Colorado then managed five shots and scored twice over the final 5:47.

Carolina center Martin Necas scored with 2:11 left to make it a two-goal lead before another Avalanche goal. But Carolina right winger Andrei Svechnikov stopped the Avalanche’s comeback attempt by scoring an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining.

“It didn’t faze them, they just kept playing,” said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour. “The way it’s gone the last few games, it could have maybe gone a different direction, but it didn’t.”

Tye Kartye and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the first period, while Dunn and Shane Wright added goals in the second. Jaden Schwartz scored an empty-net goal in the third period to seal the win for the Kraken, who have now won the first two games of their four-game Eastern Conference road trip. Dunn assisted on both of the first-period goals.

Goaltender Joey Daccord held a shutout into the third period, finishing with 27 saves.

The Islanders, who have now lost 10 of their last 13 games, scored twice in the third period with goals from Noah Dobson and Maxim Tsyplakov. Ilya Sorokin made nine saves before being pulled after two periods, with Marcus Hogberg coming in and stopping all 11 shots he faced in his first NHL game since April 2021.

Kartye opened the scoring just 2:48 into the game when Dunn’s shot from between the blue line and the left faceoff circle deflected off Kartye’s stick and went under Sorokin’s glove. The Kraken doubled their lead with 3:02 left in the first period on a power-play goal. Dunn’s shot from above the left faceoff circle was tipped by Bjorkstrand and slipped under Sorokin’s arm.

Dunn added a goal in the second period when his shot from the left slot went over Sorokin’s shoulder, helped by a screen from Yanni Gourde. Wright scored another power-play goal with 6:55 left in the second, sending a shot under defenseman Scott Mayfield and past Sorokin after a pass from Brandon Montour.

Dobson broke Daccord’s shutout with a second-chance goal 8:03 into the third period. Tsyplakov made it 4-2 by scoring on a rebound with 4:23 left. Schwartz’s empty-net goal with 2:40 remaining ended the Islanders’ comeback attempt.

The Seattle Kraken played their best game of the season on Tuesday, while the New York Islanders struggled once again to finish strong.

The Kraken will look to build on their victory, while the Islanders will try to fix their issues with closing games when they meet on Thursday night in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams had a day off on Wednesday after playing on the road the night before. The Kraken defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2, while the Islanders lost to the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in overtime.

The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Kraken, who had lost once to Anaheim and twice to San Jose—teams that were behind Seattle in the Pacific Division standings entering play on Wednesday. During that losing streak, the Kraken were outscored 17-9.

However, the Kraken started their four-game East Coast road trip strong, never trailing against the Hurricanes, who have made the playoffs for the past six seasons.

Jaden Schwartz scored just 19 seconds after the game started, and Eeli Tolvanen gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with a goal at 5:56 of the second period. After Carolina tied the game, Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev each scored in a span of less than five minutes late in the third period.

The Kraken outshot the Hurricanes 28-19 and allowed just seven shots in the first two periods. Carolina entered Wednesday with the fifth-most goals (93) in the NHL and was second in shots (810).

Tuesday’s win was the Kraken’s first victory in a game where they never trailed since Nov. 20, when they shut out the Nashville Predators 3-0.

“It takes a 60-minute effort to beat a Carolina team,” Seattle coach Dan Bylsma said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I thought the battle and compete all game long, giving that team (19) shots in the game — five in the first, two in the second, that’s not something that happens very often. That was probably our best 60 of the year.”

For the Islanders, a rare uneventful and scoreless third period was followed by another tough loss in overtime. This was their seventh loss when leading in the third period, which is the most in the NHL.

Islanders center Bo Horvat had a chance to finish off a two-on-one opportunity, but a pass into the crease from Canadiens center Nick Suzuki bounced off Horvat’s skate and back to Suzuki, who scored on a backhand to beat goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

“He just shot it, hit my skate and it went right back to him,” Horvat said. “Yeah it (stinks). I was in the right spot to get the rebound and it just took a (expletive) hop on me and ended up in the back of the net. That’s the way it’s going.”

The Islanders have lost a third-period lead in seven of their 17 losses. Tuesday marked the third time they lost a game that was tied in the third period.

New York has outscored its opponents 43-32 in the first two periods, but they’ve been outscored 44-22 in the third period and beyond.

Suzuki knocked in the rebound off his own shot 2:39 into overtime to score his 10th goal of the season.

Patrik Laine, who was making his debut with the Canadiens, scored the other goal. The Canadiens avoided a third straight loss and won their second game in the last six (2-3-1).

This was the fourth consecutive game between the Canadiens and Islanders that was decided by just one goal.

Sam Montembeault made 30 saves for his fourth career win against the Islanders, and his first win since Nov. 18 against the Oilers.

Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, and Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves in the loss. New York has been outscored 44-22 in the third period and overtime this season.

Laine scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 7:23 of the second period, beating Sorokin with a wrist shot from the faceoff circle. Laine’s goal was his first of the season, and he became the 76th player in franchise history to score in his debut.

Laine, who was traded to the Canadiens in August from the Columbus Blue Jackets, missed the first 24 games of the season due to a knee injury he suffered in a preseason game on Sept. 28 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With his assist on Laine’s goal, Suzuki extended his point streak to four games, with three goals and four assists.

The Islanders responded late in the second period with a power-play goal from Lee, who chipped in his own rebound past Montembeault for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Lee has three goals and three assists in his last three games.

The first period ended scoreless, with the Canadiens outshooting the Islanders 7-5.

This was the second of three regular-season matchups between the two teams. The Islanders won 4-3 in a shootout against the Canadiens on Oct. 19. The season series will conclude on March 20 in Elmont, N.Y.

Simon Holmstrom scored twice, marking his second career multi-goal game, both in consecutive matches. He netted the Islanders’ second goal and later added an empty-net goal in the final seconds.

The Islanders won for the third time in their last 11 games (3-4-4), avoiding a loss after leading into the third period. This win followed their 5-4 overtime loss in Washington the night before, where they blew a 4-2 lead.

Lee recorded his second consecutive multi-point game, despite the Islanders struggling at times to generate scoring chances. A goal from Matt Martin in the first period was ruled offside.

Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves to earn his 19th career shutout, leading the Islanders to their first shutout of the season. Sorokin made a crucial save during a short-handed 2-on-1 rush from Dylan Cozens and later stopped several shots with Buffalo’s extra attacker in the final minute.

Buffalo lost to the Islanders for the second time this season and suffered its third consecutive defeat. Sabres goalie James Reimer made 17 saves in his second start for Buffalo.

The Islanders broke their 0-for-14 power play slump just 20 seconds into their first man advantage. Lee positioned himself well in front of the net, fought off Buffalo’s Owen Power, received a pass from Kyle Palmieri, and redirected the puck past Reimer with his backhand.

The Islanders extended their lead to 2-0 a little more than two minutes later after taking advantage of a Buffalo turnover. Henri Jokiharju lost the puck at the blue line, and Lee raced down the left side, feeding Holmstrom, who finished the play by sending a shot over a sprawled Reimer.

The Buffalo Sabres have had a strong start to their season, putting them in a good position to break one of the longest playoff droughts in NHL history.

On the other hand, the New York Islanders are struggling, and it’s becoming hard for them to shake off their recent bad luck.

The Sabres will try to stay in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings, while the Islanders will look to fix their third-period struggles when the two teams meet in Elmont, N.Y., on Saturday night.

Both teams will be playing their second game in as many nights after losing in overtime on Friday. The Sabres lost 4-3 to the Vancouver Canucks, and the Islanders blew a third-period lead, losing 5-4 to the Washington Capitals.

Even with the loss, the Sabres are feeling positive, having gone 7-3-1 in their last 11 games. They are one of five teams within two points of the two Eastern Conference wild-card spots. Buffalo hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season.

On Friday, the Sabres managed to earn a point after coming back from a two-goal deficit in the third period against the Canucks. They outshot Vancouver 34-22 overall.

The Sabres also outshot the Minnesota Wild — who have the second-most points in the Western Conference — 39-29 in a 1-0 loss on Wednesday.

New York Islanders players in the 2nd period

“We played with desperation, and that’s what this team has,” said center Dylan Cozens, who scored Buffalo’s first goal in the third period. “We don’t have any quit, we’re going to battle until the last buzzer and we’re going to keep fighting until the game’s over.”

The Islanders, who have lost eight of their last 10 games (2-4-4), are becoming desperate to fix their third-period problems. On Friday, they led 4-2 going into the third period but lost after allowing three unanswered goals. This is the seventh time this season they’ve lost after holding a lead going into the final period.

In their 6-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, the Islanders allowed three goals in the third period. They were outshot 9-3 in the third period and overtime on Friday.

The Islanders also failed to generate any shots during a power play late in regulation when Nic Dowd was called for slashing with 3:50 left.

Even though the Islanders are only three points out of a wild-card spot, they are tied for last place in the Metropolitan Division with the Pittsburgh Penguins. They are ahead of only the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens, who both have two games in hand.

“Same story,” said Islanders left winger Matt Martin. “We continue to find ways to lose. It’s not good enough. I think we just shoot ourselves in the foot a lot. We’re just not taking advantage of big moments in games.”

The Detroit Red Wings have struggled with consistency during the first month and a half of the season, which has hurt their chances of ending an eight-year playoff drought.

Since late October, the Red Wings have not been able to win more than two games in a row. However, they are hopeful that their comeback victory over the New York Islanders on Monday is the start of a turning point. Detroit scored three unanswered goals in the final period to win 4-2 and avoid a fifth loss in six games.

“We’re in desperation mode for sure,” said goaltender Alex Lyon. “We need to play desperate every night, and the best teams in this league play desperate every night. If you’re not desperate, you have to find a way to play desperate. It’s good, it’s fun to play that way and it’s a grind, but it’s kind of where we’re at. We need to continue to push real hard.”

The Red Wings’ power play had been effective until their last three games, but they have failed to score in their last 10 chances, including three on Monday.

Detroit’s top line produced at even strength in the Islanders game, with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond scoring the tying and go-ahead goals, respectively. Raymond has scored in three straight games after only scoring twice in the first 18 games.

“You need a top line if you’re going to be good in this league and if you’re going to have success,” head coach Derek Lalonde said. “Those guys have been doing it of late.”

The defensive unit has also improved. After allowing 15 goals in a three-game losing streak from Nov. 15-18, the Red Wings have only allowed five goals in their last three games.

“We’ve had some ups and downs, but this team has shown some battle,” Lalonde said. “Hopefully, we can keep building our game.”

The Calgary Flames, on the other hand, had their four-game winning streak broken with a 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Monday. The loss was largely due to penalty trouble, as the Flames were penalized for 20 minutes, giving Ottawa nine power plays. The Senators converted on two of them.

“It’s hard to win when you have 20 penalty minutes, right? It’s one-third of the game in the penalty box,” said defenseman Rasmus Andersson. “They have a good power play. I didn’t think we were playing our best, even at five on five. I think they were a desperate team, they were a little bit more desperate than us to start.”

Coach Ryan Huska blamed a lack of discipline for the loss.

“We took eight minor penalties. I don’t care what league you’re in, you’re not going to win a hockey game or give yourself a chance to win,” he said. “But hey, five on five, we did some things, and there was a fight right to the end, which I’m pretty proud of our group. But we didn’t really give ourselves a chance with the amount of penalties we were taking.”

The loss marked the start of a four-game road trip for Calgary, which will also visit Columbus and Pittsburgh this week.

“We gave it our all until the end. It’s one of these games that you just leave behind you, and you move on,” Andersson said.

Detroit has won the last four matchups against Calgary. It is uncertain whether forward Patrick Kane, who has three goals and seven assists this season, will play Wednesday after missing Monday’s game due to an upper-body injury.

Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond scored in a quick sequence in the third period on Monday night, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 comeback win over the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y. Larkin tied the game, and Raymond scored the game-winning goal just minutes later.

Simon Edvinsson added an empty-net goal with 2.4 seconds left, securing the Red Wings’ victory. This was only Detroit’s third win in their last nine games (3-5-1), but it completed a three-game season sweep of the Islanders, who they beat three times despite only scoring seven goals on 63 shots in those games.

This win marked the second time in five days the Red Wings came back in the third period to defeat the Islanders. They had also scored twice in the final 4:46 to win 2-1 last Thursday in Detroit.

Moritz Seider had scored earlier in the first period for Detroit, and goaltender Alex Lyon made 27 saves to help secure the win.

For the Islanders, Anders Lee scored in the first period, and Kyle Palmieri added another goal in the second. New York has now lost four of their last five games (1-3-1), blowing third-period leads in all four losses. Goalie Semyon Varlamov made 17 saves in the loss.

Lee scored early in the game after a scramble in front of the net. Lyon lost his stick during a save attempt, and Lee was able to score under his arm. Seider then tied the game with a shot from the point, assisted by Andrew Copp. Palmieri gave the Islanders the lead again in the second after a deflection from teammate Brock Nelson.

The Red Wings came back in the third when Larkin turned and shot a puck past Varlamov to tie the game. Raymond then redirected a shot from Edvinsson into the net for the go-ahead goal. Varlamov was pulled with just under three minutes left, but the Islanders couldn’t capitalize, and Edvinsson sealed the win with an empty-netter.
