In New York, the Rangers acquire center J.T. Miller from the Canucks in a multiplayer trade

The New York Rangers traded for veteran center J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks in a multiplayer deal on Friday night.

In exchange, the Rangers gave up center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a 2025 conditional draft pick to Vancouver. New York also received defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom.

The Canucks had been expected to trade either Miller or Elias Pettersson due to a reported disagreement between the two. Miller was unexpectedly scratched before Vancouver’s 5-3 loss to Dallas on Friday, and the teams announced the trade during the game.

“I want to thank J.T. for his time here in Vancouver,” said Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin in a statement. “J.T. was a passionate impact player and good leader for our hockey team. Moving him was not an easy decision but we are pleased with our return from the Rangers. Both Filip and Victor are good additions for our club and we are excited to see what they bring to us on the ice.”

Miller, 31, was drafted by the Rangers with the 15th overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. He spent parts of six seasons in New York before being traded to Tampa Bay along with defenseman Ryan McDonagh on February 26, 2018.

Miller, now in the second year of a seven-year, $56 million contract, will help strengthen the Rangers lineup, which has struggled after winning the Presidents’ Trophy last season and reaching the Eastern Conference final. Miller has nine goals and 26 assists in 40 games with Vancouver this season.

“When you’re in this business long enough, there’s going to be things like that,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said about the trade. “Millsey was a big part of the team. I’m sure he’s emotional… Millsey’s played great hockey for the Canucks and myself. Obviously, a heart-and-soul guy. I think he’s going to do well over there.”

Pettersson didn’t want to talk about his issues with Miller or what it means for him going forward.

“I don’t want to get into that,” he said. “All we can do is look forward.”

Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks

Later, the Canucks acquired defenseman Marcus Pettersson—no relation to Elias—and forward Drew O’Connor from Pittsburgh in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, prospect Melvin Fernstrom, and the draft pick they received from the Rangers in the earlier deal.

New York is currently in 13th place in the East, five points behind Columbus for the conference’s second wild card. Vancouver is in ninth place in the West, just one point behind a wild-card spot.

For his career, Miller has 247 goals and 427 assists in 839 games with the Rangers, Lightning, and Canucks. He also has 12 goals and 44 assists in 91 playoff games. Miller had a career-high 37 goals and 66 assists last season, setting personal bests with 103 points, 40 power-play points, nine game-winning goals, and 217 hits.

During his first time with the Rangers, Miller scored 72 goals and had 100 assists in 341 games.

Chytil, 25, was selected by the Rangers with the 21st overall pick in the 2017 draft. He has 75 goals and 89 assists in 378 games, including 11 goals and nine assists in 41 games this season.

“Heard some really good things,” Tocchet said about Chytil. “I heard he’s very excited to come. Mancini I hear is a really big defenseman, young, that can play. Yeah, I think there’s some stuff to work with.”

Marcus Pettersson has 14 goals and 119 assists in 444 games for Anaheim and Pittsburgh. O’Connor has 24 goals and 26 assists in 157 games for the Penguins.

Heinen has 93 goals and 137 assists in 538 games for Boston, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, and Vancouver. Desharnais has one goal and 15 assists in 114 games.

Mancini, 22, made his NHL debut earlier this season, scoring one goal and adding four assists in 15 games with the Rangers. He also had three goals and seven assists in 23 games for Hartford in the AHL.

Brannstrom, 25, has 10 goals and 67 assists in 294 games. Dorrington, 20, was drafted by Vancouver in the sixth round of the 2022 draft.

3 Key Highlights From Avalanche’s 5-4 Victory Against the New York Rangers in Denver

The Colorado Avalanche ended their three-game losing streak on Sunday by defeating the New York Rangers 5-4.

This win came after their big trade that sent star right winger Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes and brought forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury to Colorado. The new players had an impact in the win over the Rangers.

Here are three key points from the Avalanche’s victory:

Avs Blow Two-Goal Leads But Hold On and Win in the Final Moments

The Avalanche started the game with a 2-0 lead over the Rangers, but Colorado allowed the Rangers to tie it up.

This pattern repeated when the Avs took a 4-2 lead with just under four minutes left in the second period, only to see the Rangers tie it again with under five minutes remaining in regulation.

Despite having only three shots in the final period, the Avalanche managed to score the winning goal thanks to forward Artturi Lehkonen, who netted the goal with just 15 seconds left in the game.

This win brought the Avalanche’s record to 29-20-2 for the season, and it was a big morale boost for the team after their losing streak.

It also showed their resilience, though they need to work on maintaining their lead in future games. Still, every win counts, and Sunday’s victory showed a lot of heart from the Avalanche.

New Avalanche Players Contribute to the Win Against the Rangers

This was Colorado’s second game without Mikko Rantanen, and while new forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury didn’t score in the previous loss to the Boston Bruins, they were key in the win against the Rangers.

Colorado Avalanche players celebrate after scoring

Drury scored the first goal of the game (his fourth of the season), while Necas had two assists (his 40th and 41st of the season).

Though Rantanen’s absence will be felt, if Necas can keep contributing like he did in this game and Drury can add some offensive support, the Avalanche will be in good shape moving forward.

Rantanen is still the most talented player involved in the trade, but depth is important for playoff success, and getting immediate help from Necas and Drury helps ease the impact of losing Rantanen.

Makar Shines with Two Goals Against the Rangers

Cale Makar, the Avalanche’s star defenseman, was once again a key player in the win, scoring two goals — his 17th and 18th of the season — and assisting on Lehkonen’s game-winning goal. Makar is on track for a 29-goal, 90-point season, which would set or tie career highs for him.

He is making a strong case for winning another Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. Along with superstar center Nathan MacKinnon, Makar is a key player for the Avalanche.

He’s only 26 years old, and his best years may still be ahead of him. Sunday’s win was another example of how Makar can lead the team to victory in many different ways.

Avalanche edge Rangers 5-4 with a late-game finish in Denver

Cale Makar scored two goals and assisted on the game-winning goal by Artturi Lehkonen with 15 seconds left, helping the Colorado Avalanche beat the New York Rangers 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Avalanche lost two separate two-goal leads but won after goalie Mackenzie Blackwood made a crucial save on Mika Zibanejad’s one-timer with 61 seconds remaining, while Makar was serving a penalty for holding the stick.

Makar’s penalty ended with 24 seconds left. When he left the penalty box, he intercepted a pass from Will Borgen meant for Artemi Panarin in the Rangers’ offensive zone. Makar took control of the puck, started a 3-on-1 rush, and passed to Lehkonen, who scored by lifting the puck over goalie Igor Shesterkin.

The Rangers had tied the game 4-4 earlier when Panarin scored from a rebound off Vincent Trocheck’s shot with 4:58 left. Makar scored both of his goals in the first period, including a power-play goal at 5:24 that gave the Avalanche a 3-2 lead.

Makar’s first goal came just 43 seconds after Jack Drury scored for the Rangers. Juuso Parssinen also scored for the Avalanche, while Nathan MacKinnon and new player Martin Necas assisted on Makar’s goals.

New York Rangers and Boston Bruins

Makar’s performance helped the Avalanche win for the fifth time in 12 games (5-5-2) after a six-game winning streak from December 19 to January 2. Sam Carrick and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Rangers within 86 seconds of each other in the first period before Makar scored during a penalty on Adam Fox.

Borgen also scored for the Rangers, who had their 10-game points streak come to an end.

Blackwood made 34 saves, while Shesterkin allowed five goals on 21 shots. Drury started the scoring at 5:43 by deflecting Keaton Middleton’s shot from the point. Makar then scored his first goal at 6:26, receiving a backhand pass from MacKinnon and shooting from the right circle past Shesterkin.

Carrick made it 2-1 with a tap-in from the left side of the crease at 12:50. Trocheck made it 3-1 with 11:24 left, finishing a 2-on-1 play with Alexis Lafreniere by sliding the puck into the open right side of the net.

Igor Shesterkin Leads Rangers to 1-0 Shootout Victory Over Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden

Igor Shesterkin’s stellar performance in goal guided the New York Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. He made 27 saves throughout the game and was flawless in the shootout, stopping all three Blue Jackets shooters, including Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, and Kirill Marchenko. The lone goal of the game came from Vincent Trocheck in the second round of the shootout, securing the Rangers’ win. This victory marked the Rangers’ second consecutive win, extending their strong form.

Rangers’ Strong Defensive Play and Shesterkin’s Shutout

Shesterkin’s shutout was his first since the season opener on October 9, and it was a testament to the Rangers’ improved defense. The goalie’s solid play, coupled with the defensive unit’s efforts, held the Blue Jackets scoreless throughout the game. Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praised Shesterkin for his consistency, noting that goaltending was crucial in maintaining the team’s competitive edge. Despite being outshot in the first period, the Rangers managed to regain control, with Shesterkin playing a key role in ensuring the game remained scoreless through regulation.

New York Rangers vs Columbus Blue Jackets
New York Rangers vs Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL)

Although the Rangers were outshot 15-4 in the first period, they adjusted their play and began to dominate the shot count, outshooting the Blue Jackets 22-12 over the final two periods. Laviolette highlighted the team’s resilience after a shaky start, and the Rangers’ defense tightened up significantly after the first period. Shesterkin was particularly sharp, making important saves like stopping Cole Sillinger’s redirect early in the game and Chris Kreider’s power-play deflection in the first period. These key stops kept the Blue Jackets from capitalizing on early opportunities.

Blue Jackets’ Strong Defensive Effort in Loss

Despite the loss, the Blue Jackets were not without their own moments of excellence. Goalie Daniil Tarasov made 26 saves, including critical stops on Mika Zibanejad’s breakaways in overtime. Head coach Dean Evason acknowledged the strong play from both teams, noting that while the game wasn’t filled with high-scoring action, the effort and patience were evident. The Blue Jackets were able to stay composed and minimize mistakes, but in the end, they couldn’t find a way past Shesterkin or capitalize on their chances, especially during the shootout.

The game moved into a tense shootout after neither team could break the deadlock in regulation or overtime. Trocheck’s goal in the second round, after Tarasov left the blocker side open, was enough to secure the win for New York. Shesterkin continued his excellence, stopping Fantilli and Marchenko to seal the victory. Trocheck reflected on his decision to target the blocker side, which proved to be the game-winning strategy. Shesterkin’s save on Marchenko in the shootout was a crucial moment, as his sharp anticipation sealed the Rangers’ hard-fought victory.

Rangers surge into playoff race with NHL-leading streak in New York

Earlier this season, if you doubted the Rangers and thought they were headed for a rough year with no chance of turning things around, it wouldn’t have been hard to agree. There were many moments that made it seem like things were slipping away.

However, now it looks like the Rangers are back in form, and they may even be stronger than before. While we won’t know for sure until the NHL playoffs, Thursday night at Madison Square Garden provided plenty of proof. They dominated the Flyers 6-1, extending their points streak to 10 games (7-0-3). This is the 14th time in franchise history they’ve managed such a streak.

Offensive Surge

Since January 2, the Rangers have scored 43 goals, the most in the NHL. They’ve also gained 19 points during this stretch, which is the highest in the league.

Filip Chytil, who scored his 11th goal of the season to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead, praised the team’s mental resilience, saying, “Even in the tough moments which we had, I think we didn’t lose our heads, because we know what team we have, and we just didn’t forget to play hockey in a couple of months.”

He added, “Sometimes you have stretches like this in a season, and it’s just about the team, how you respond. And I think, for the last month, we’ve responded in a good way, and that’s why we’re winning these hard games. We have to keep going like this.”

Team Effort and Shesterkin’s Solid Play

The Rangers’ success isn’t just about one or two players; it’s a full-team effort. Igor Shesterkin, despite allowing a goal early in the game, showed his usual brilliance by stopping 35 shots, including a difficult second period where the Flyers fired 17 shots. He was key to the win, and his performance has been stellar recently, with a 6-0-1 record in his last seven games and allowing only one goal in his last three.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praised Shesterkin’s performance, saying, “He was fantastic. He’s been playing like that. He’s been right on point with his game.”

Igor Shesterkin makes a save in the 1st period

Chytil shared his confidence in Shesterkin, saying, “I don’t have to talk about him at all, because he’s just speaking with his performance on the ice. He’s unbelievable and we know he’s great, but also we’ve gotta help him, because he can’t just stand on his head and make all the saves.”

Strong Offensive Contributions Across the Team

The Rangers’ offense has been diverse, with goals coming from unexpected places. They fired shots into traffic, creating opportunities from deflections, with Chytil and Adam Edstrom both scoring. Three Rangers defensemen found the back of the net—Braden Schneider, K’Andre Miller, and Adam Fox. It was the first time since 2019 that all six defensemen had at least one point in a game.

Reilly Smith added a late goal, and it was a crucial win for the Rangers, who are currently fighting for a spot in the Wild Card race along with the Flyers. The victory should give Rangers fans confidence, especially after the team’s struggles earlier in the season. The players believe in their potential, and it seems the fans should too.

Defenseman K’Andre Miller expressed the team’s confidence, saying, “I think everybody in this room knew how good of a team we are, honestly. I think the last couple of games have shown a lot of good things. And how good we can be.”

Why the Rangers Should Avoid Trading for J.T. Miller from the Canucks in New York

As the New York Rangers look to salvage their season, there are rumors that they might be interested in acquiring struggling Vancouver Canucks center J.T. Miller.

According to The Athletic, the Canucks and Rangers were reportedly in talks over the weekend about a potential trade. The deal could have involved sending center Filip Chytil, defenseman Ryan Lindgren, and a first-round draft pick to Vancouver in exchange for the 31-year-old Miller.

Miller spent parts of his first six NHL seasons with the Rangers, including a season in 2016-17 when he scored 56 points in 82 games. The Rangers traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2018, but his performance surged with the Canucks. He has recorded more than a point per game four times with Vancouver, including a career-high 103 points in 2023-24.

But the question remains: is Miller the player who can help push the Rangers back into playoff contention, or would he just elevate them into the middle of the league and prevent them from securing a higher draft pick?

Now might not be the right time for the Rangers to acquire him.

It would make sense if the Rangers were on a winning streak and had a good chance of getting back into a wild-card spot. However, there are currently four teams ahead of them in the wild-card race, and moneypuck.com gives them only a 50.8% chance of making the playoffs.

J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson

The chances of the Rangers turning things around this season aren’t strong. If acquiring Miller only helps them remain on the fringes of playoff contention, they should pass on the move, accept the struggles of this season, focus on securing a good draft pick, and look to make a more impactful trade in the offseason.

If the Canucks decide to wait until the offseason to trade Miller, the Rangers could revisit the trade then. But right now, even if it means missing out on Miller, it’s better to pass on this deal.

The Rangers’ future could benefit from adding another high-end prospect, especially after not seeing significant progress from 2019’s No. 2 pick, Kaapo Kakko. There are talented prospects expected to be at the top of the 2025 NHL draft who are much younger than Miller and could be more affordable with entry-level contracts.

Additionally, there are promising NHL players who will become unrestricted free agents (UFAs) on July 1. The Rangers could sign a top-two center without giving up any trade assets. This would allow them to make other trades to address other team needs.

The Rangers still have a strong core, including Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, and Igor Shesterkin. Alexis Lafreniere has also shown improvement in recent seasons.

While they shouldn’t let this season affect their long-term goal of competing for a Stanley Cup, it’s important not to rush into moves out of desperation. Acquiring Miller right now isn’t the best choice. The timing for such a move makes more sense in the summer.

Miller isn’t the kind of player who can turn the Rangers’ season around in a meaningful way, which is why they should pass on this trade at this moment.

Rangers Win 1-0 in Shootout Against Blue Jackets in New York

Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves and stopped all three Columbus Blue Jackets shooters in the shootout to help the New York Rangers secure a 1-0 victory at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

“We played awesome,” Shesterkin said about the Rangers’ defensive play.

This was Shesterkin’s first shutout since the season opener on October 9. He had allowed nine goals in five games since returning from an upper-body injury that had kept him out for four games.

Shesterkin successfully stopped Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, and Kirill Marchenko in the shootout.

The only goal of the shootout came from Vincent Trocheck, who scored in the second round.

The Rangers (22-20-3) have now won two consecutive games, four of their last five, and earned points in seven straight (5-0-2).

“Goaltending is huge,” said Rangers coach Peter Laviolette. “From a 5-on-5 standpoint, a penalty kill standpoint, from the confidence of your team, you play a game when you can get 0-0 to overtime you know he’s done his job. He’s played really well for us, and we need that. We’re in a position where we’ve got to win games, win points. He had to be sharp with his game tonight because we weren’t able to get the run support he needed to get out ahead.”

Blue Jackets goaltender Daniil Tarasov made 26 saves, including two key stops on Mika Zibanejad during overtime breakaways. Zibanejad was stopped at 1:25 and again with 17 seconds left in overtime. Despite Tarasov’s performance, the Blue Jackets (22-17-4) lost their first game since January 2, ending their six-game winning streak.

“It was a great hockey game,” said Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason. “Both teams played hard. It might not have been exciting as far as scoring goals, but the effort was there by both teams, the desperation was there by both teams, the patience. I really liked how our hockey club stayed within ourselves.

We didn’t panic, didn’t open it up. We gave up some stuff, but we got some stuff as well. Just comes down to a shootout and they find one, we don’t.”

Laviolette mentioned that the Rangers weren’t happy with how they played in the first period, where they were outshot 15-4. However, they outshot the Blue Jackets 22-12 over the rest of the game.

“The first period for me was a little bit off, probably gave up eight or nine chances,” said Laviolette, “and then maybe didn’t give up eight or nine for the rest of the game.”

Shesterkin makes 27 saves for the shutout win over the Blue Jackets

Both teams had chances, but neither could score during the first two periods, which ended with a combined 35 shots on goal (20-15 in favor of the Blue Jackets). The third period saw just 10 shots between the teams (6-4 for New York).

Mikael Pyyhtia had a good opportunity late in the second period on a semi-breakaway, but Reilly Smith made a strong defensive play to prevent a scoring chance by stripping the puck away from Pyyhtia.

Smith later helped set up Adam Fox for a tip-in attempt, but Tarasov was able to make a save and cover the puck at 14:25 of the second period.

Earlier in the second, K’Andre Miller had a great chance from the slot after a rebound off Zibanejad’s shot, but Tarasov was quick to make the save at 4:19.

In the first period, Shesterkin made a great save on Cole Sillinger, stopping his redirect with a quick pad save at 4:40.

Chris Kreider also had a chance on a power play at 11:14, but he deflected Fox’s wrist shot off the right post.

“They’ve got skilled guys that are going to get chances, but after the first 10 [minutes] we settled in, had some looks ourselves,” Fox said. “Sometimes a boring game instead of a track meet is good. We did a good job of that today.”

Tarasov’s saves on Zibanejad’s breakaways in overtime kept the game tied and forced a shootout.

“He made some great saves on the breakaways that we gave up, that we’ve got to obviously look after a little bit,” said Evason. “He played a strong game, and I think everybody was committed in front of him as well.”

When the game moved to the shootout, Shesterkin remained solid, while Trocheck managed to score. Trocheck explained, “I was just going down to see what I can do,” and took the shot when he saw the blocker side open.

Shesterkin then stopped Fantilli after Trocheck scored and sealed the win by stopping Marchenko in the third round.

“I just saw he did a step right and I know righty players like to do high glove,” Shesterkin said, “but the puck a little bit jumped in front of his stick, and I took the chance.”

Victory Over Stars Helps Canadiens Extend their Point Streak

A thrilling match took place as the Rangers faced off against the Canadiens, culminating in a 5-4 overtime defeat.

The game featured numerous goals, intense fights, remarkable saves, several lead changes, and breakaway chances, providing excitement for both teams.

Despite the loss, the Rangers maintained their point streak, extending it to eight games with a record of 5-0-3 during this stretch.

Alexis Lafreniere shines in his hometown with an opening goal for the Rangers (New York Rangers)

While there were four ties throughout the contest, the Rangers only trailed once when Montreal’s Patrick Laine scored the game-winner in overtime, marking his 12th goal of the season in just 18 games.

This setback was particularly frustrating for the Rangers, who let another potential victory slip through their fingers.

The defeat mirrored a previous 5-4 overtime loss they experienced against the Stars, where they held a 3-0 lead before allowing Dallas to come back and finally win.

Key Moments for the Rangers

Despite missing a point, the Rangers still secured a vital point, bringing their total to 48 points. They are currently tied with the Philadelphia Flyers and trail the Columbus Blue Jackets by three points for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers have not lost a game in regulation at Madison Square Garden since December 22, with their last regulation defeat occurring against the Chicago Blackhawks on January 4.

On a positive note, following Sunday’s match, seven of the Rangers’ remaining nine games before the Four Nations Face Off tournament in mid-February will be played at home in front of their fans at MSG.

Stellar Performance by Jonathan Quick

Although Jonathan Quick missed the opportunity for his 400th career win for the third straight time, he delivered an impressive performance throughout the night.

The three-time Stanley Cup champion recorded 33 saves, reaching over 30 saves for the third time in his last four starts. The Canadiens could have scored more if not for Quick’s outstanding play from the beginning to the end of the match.

Jonathan Quick dazzles with 33 saves but narrowly misses his 400th career win (New York Rangers)

He made several remarkable stops, particularly in the third period, where he had 15 saves. A standout moment occurred late in the first period when Quick, having lost his goalie stick during a scrum, utilized a player’s stick to make a save, preserving the Rangers’ 2-1 lead.

Quick will have additional chances to secure his milestone, as the Rangers have two upcoming back-to-backs—February 1 against the Boston Bruins and February 2 against the Vegas Golden Knights, or February 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins and February 8 at the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Among active goaltenders in the NHL, Quick ranks third in wins with 399, trailing Marc-Andre Fleury and Sergei Bobrovsky. He leads all U.S.-born goalies with nearly 100 more wins than the closest active American-born goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, who has 303 wins.

Rangers Forwards Find Scoring Touch

In Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Rangers faced a challenging situation, finishing with only 26 shots in regulation and overtime, scoring their sole goal in a shootout victory.

Quebec native Alexis Lafreniere made a triumphant return to his hometown by opening the scoring with his 12th goal of the season, a relief after managing only three goals in his previous 27 games leading up to Sunday night.

When the Canadiens equalized at 1-1, the Rangers quickly responded with a goal from Will Cuylle just 46 seconds later, taking advantage of a Montreal turnover to find the net and ending a 15-game goal drought.

Mika Zibanejad helped the Rangers regain the lead by breaking a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal, concluding a seven-game stretch without a goal. Though Chris Kreider did not receive an assist on the play, his presence effectively screened Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes.

Tensions Rise Between Teams

Tensions flared early in the second period as Matt Rempe and Arber Xhekaj exchanged punches after a heated first period.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 241 pounds, Rempe faced off against Xhekaj, who is 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, and both landed blows until the referees intervened.

After the fight, the Canadiens received a power play but were unable to capitalize. However, they quickly tied the game at 2-2 once the teams returned to even strength.

The on-ice drama continued, leading to the Rangers’ only power-play goal of the night, with Zibanejad scoring to give the Blueshirts a 3-2 lead midway through the second period.

As this marked the third and final meeting of the season between these two Eastern Conference teams, fans can expect another matchup between Rempe and Xhekaj in the upcoming season.

Rangers aim for a positive outlook as they face the Blackhawks in Chicago

The New York Rangers are not giving up on the season despite having lost five out of their last six games.

Their recent struggles have dropped their record to 17-20-1, but the Rangers are still feeling hopeful as they prepare for their game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

Things went wrong for the Rangers on Saturday when they lost to the Washington Capitals 7-4. New York was trailing by just one goal, 5-4, after Mika Zibanejad scored in the third period at 13:04. However, Washington responded quickly, scoring twice in the last six minutes of the game.

Even though the season hasn’t gone as expected for the Rangers, who were the Presidents’ Trophy winners last year, Zibanejad remains confident that the team can turn things around.

“That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? What’s our option? What’s our option? Just say, ‘We’re done with the season?’ No, we can’t,” Zibanejad said. “I think we have a lot of faith in the guys that are here.”

Zibanejad is focused only on the next game.

“We have no other option than try to stay positive, try to work,” Zibanejad said. “And just think about it: Tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity to get two points, a new opportunity to get a win and that’s what we have to do.”

Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

On Sunday, the Rangers will face the Chicago Blackhawks, who are looking to start a winning streak after a rough patch. The Blackhawks had a strong stretch of three wins in a row from Dec. 15-19, but then lost five games straight.

They bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, thanks to two goals from Nick Foligno.

Foligno sees the win over Montreal as a good start to a winning streak.

“Huge, huge,” Foligno said of the victory over Montreal. “Just for our fans. We left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, ourselves mostly, in how we played in that Winter Classic (a 6-2 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday). We want to make sure we’re proud of the brand of hockey we’re putting out there, and that’s more the Blackhawk brand they’re expecting to see.

“We’ll fine-tune it and get a little bit better, but the momentum will hopefully carry over. Yeah, it was big to get one at home ice here. We have a nice little homestand, so let’s take advantage of it.”

Chicago center Connor Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, is on a six-game point streak after getting an assist against the Canadiens. The 19-year-old now has 95 points (32 goals, 63 assists) in 107 career games, making him the second-highest scoring teenager in franchise history.

Sunday’s game is the second time this season the Rangers will face the Blackhawks. Chicago won the first meeting 2-1 on Dec. 9. However, the Rangers have won seven of their last nine games against Chicago.

Igor Shesterkin Records 40 Saves in Rangers’ 2-1 Victory over Senators in New York

Igor Shesterkin made 40 saves, Alexis Lafreniere had a goal and an assist, and the New York Rangers won 2-1 against the Ottawa Senators at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

This was the second consecutive game where Shesterkin made 40+ saves, as he had 41 saves in a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. It was the first time since February 2020 that he had back-to-back games with at least 40 saves during his rookie season. He made 21 saves in the first two periods and stopped 19 of 20 shots in the third.

“I’m running out of things to say; just spectacular,” said Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller. “I mean, everybody is sitting there on the bench just praying that he somehow makes another one of those saves. He just keeps doing it. Obviously, we’d like to clean up our defense a little bit, but we love who we’ve got back there.”

Artemi Panarin scored his seventh goal of the season for the Rangers (7-2-1), who had lost two of their past three games.

New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox react as Buffalo Sabres’ Jordan Greenway celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal during the second period

“We know we can play better,” Lafreniere said. “‘Shesty’ was unreal again. He made some massive saves for us, and I don’t think we were that good defensively. We get two points, but we all know we can play better, for sure.”

Adam Gaudette scored for Ottawa, and Linus Ullmark made 16 saves for the Senators (5-5-0), who lost for the third time in four games. Ottawa outshot New York 41-18.

“I don’t really know what to say, their goalie played unbelievable,” said Senators forward Tim Stutzle. “We knew he was a great goalie and obviously we’ve got to find a way to get more behind him, but you’ve got to give him credit. He’s a great goalie and he kept them in the game. If you outshoot a team like that by 20 shots, you know you played a pretty good game.”

Panarin gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 3:03 of the first period. Lafreniere forced a turnover from Josh Norris in Ottawa’s defensive zone, and Panarin took the puck, using Travis Hamonic as a screen to get his wrist shot past Ullmark.

“Just coming back trying to strip him, I got a stick on it and went right to ‘Bread,'” Lafreniere said. “It was a nice shot. Every time he gets it in that area, in the slot, he’s so dangerous. That was a good goal by him.”

Shesterkin kept the Rangers ahead with a blocker save on Norris at 7:56 of the first period and also stopped Claude Giroux with his glove on a point-blank shot from the left circle at 17:10 of the second period. These were two of his 21 saves in the first 40 minutes.

“First period, I like the way we came out,” said Ottawa coach Travis Green. “They got the quick goal, but I like that it didn’t faze us. I thought we got better as the game went on. Loved our second and I thought we left it out there in the third.”

Lafreniere made it 2-0 for the Rangers at 2:56 of the third period, scoring a power-play goal off a pass that deflected off his foot. Reilly Smith passed the puck through his legs to Filip Chytil in the right circle, and Chytil found Lafreniere in the slot after he came around the far post.

Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators

Shesterkin kept his shutout intact with three saves in a two-second span, stopping Brady Tkachuk and two shots from Norris during a Senators power play midway through the third period.

“Those saves on the power play, that was crazy,” Lafreniere said. Gaudette finally got one past Shesterkin at 12:28 to make it 2-1. He scored with a one-timer from the left circle off a hard pass from Tkachuk across the slot.

Shesterkin stopped the final eight shots he faced, with Ottawa outshooting New York 20-5 in the third.

“I thought we played an unreal game,” said Senators forward Michael Amadio. “We just ran into a hot goalie.” Shesterkin’s save percentage is now .931, with 18 goals allowed on 262 shots in eight games. He started the game with a .923 save percentage.

“He’s the best goalie in the League and we’re lucky to have him,” Lafreniere said. “But we don’t want to give him that much work.”

Jonathan Quick leads the Rangers to a win over the Bruins in New York, ending their losing streak

Jonathan Quick made 32 saves and earned his 399th career regular-season victory as the New York Rangers ended their four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

Quick, who was made New York’s No. 1 goalie for at least three games while Igor Shesterkin recovers from an upper-body injury, got his first win since defeating the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 30.

He is one win away from reaching 400 career victories, joining Marc-Andre Fleury of Minnesota and Sergei Bobrovsky of Florida as the third active goalie to reach that milestone.

After allowing 14 goals in his previous three starts, Quick helped the Rangers secure their fifth win in 20 games (5-15-0) and end a four-game home losing streak.

Mika Zibanejad and rookie Brett Berard scored within 3:05 of each other in the first period after the Rangers started slowly.

Quick only allowed a goal to Elias Lindholm 7:57 into the second period and made several key saves, including a diving stick save on a slap shot by Charlie McAvoy with 5:27 left in the second.

He also stopped David Pastrnak twice early in the third period and made a glove save on Andrew Peeke’s long shot with 3:45 remaining. Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves in the loss.

The Rangers took the lead with 10:12 left in the first after Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov mishandled the puck in front of the net. Zibanejad took advantage, receiving a backhand pass from Reilly Smith and tapping it in for a 1-0 lead.

New York extended its lead after another misplay by a Boston defenseman. Mason Lohrei lost the puck at the blue line, and Filip Chytil set up Berard for a 2-on-1. Berard drove down the right side, stopped at the faceoff circle, and shot the puck past Swayman’s arm for a 2-0 lead.

Quick kept the shutout going with a diving save on Johnny Beecher with 12:35 left in the game, but just 32 seconds later, Lindholm slipped behind Smith, took a cross-ice pass from Pastrnak, and scored to make it 2-1.

Rangers look to address issues as Bruins visit

The New York Rangers have been struggling in recent weeks, and now they face another challenge with the injury to goaltender Igor Shesterkin. The Rangers will play without him for at least three games, starting with Thursday’s matchup against the Boston Bruins, the last two teams to win the Presidents’ Trophy for the best regular season record.

New York has gone 4-15-0 in their last 19 games, a slide that began after a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 19. Shesterkin was hurt during Monday’s 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers, where he allowed four goals.

He had also given up five goals in the loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday. Shesterkin is now on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, and he will miss at least the Bruins game as well as the next two road games against the Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks. Jonathan Quick will start in goal, with Louis Domingue as the backup.

While the Rangers hope Shesterkin’s absence is short, they’re looking to avoid a fifth straight loss, which would tie their worst streak of the season. Their current four-game losing streak has seen them outscored 19-6. Shesterkin himself has struggled recently, with a 1-5-0 record in his last six starts.

During their 19-game slump, the Rangers have lost 11 times by two or more goals. In their last game against the Panthers, they battled back from an early 2-0 deficit, tying the game twice through goals from Filip Chytil, Ryan Lindgren, and Chris Kreider.

Despite their effort, they couldn’t get the equalizer. Artemi Panarin acknowledged that while the team is playing better, they’re still losing: “It’s hard to be happy with (playing well), because we’re still losing.”

The Bruins, under interim coach Joe Sacco, have gone 12-6-1 since he replaced Jim Montgomery. They’ve won four straight games and are 5-2-1 in their last eight. In their most recent game on Tuesday, a 3-1 loss to Washington, they struggled with execution.

Despite taking 83 shots, only 27 hit the target. Sacco pointed out that they need to improve their offensive entries and get closer to the net. David Pastrnak, who has been struggling since returning from an injury, has not scored in five of the last six games.

The Rangers won all three meetings with Boston last season, after the Bruins had swept them in the 2022-23 campaign.
