Philadelphia Flyers part ways with coach John Tortorella during another tough season

John Tortorella lashed out after another loss for Philadelphia — the sixth in a row under his leadership — and said he wasn’t interested in learning how to coach a losing team in another disappointing season.

That’s no longer his concern.

The Flyers fired the blunt Tortorella on Thursday with nine games left in another season where the team failed to make the playoffs, continuing a stretch without postseason action since 2020.

The tipping point came after a 7-2 loss to Toronto on Tuesday. Tortorella, who won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004, said after the game that he wasn’t “really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we’re at right now.”

“But I have to do a better job,” he said. “So this falls on me, getting the team prepared to play the proper way until we get to the end.”

The Flyers will finish the season without him.

The Flyers named Brad Shaw as interim coach, and the team responded with a 6-4 win over Montreal on Thursday.

Flyers general manager Danny Briere explained that the decision to fire Tortorella wasn’t just because of his comments, adding that they were “one of the things that happened along the way.”

“I feel there’s probably more the frustration of the game and getting shellacked there in Toronto. The embarrassment that we all felt,” Briere told reporters in Philadelphia. “I tend to be careful with that and not put too much stock into it. I put it more as he was frustrated with how things have gone lately, and he was embarrassed by the loss that night, just like a lot of our players were.”

Under Tortorella, the Flyers lost 11 of their last 12 games and only won six out of the last 25. It was a major setback for a rebuilding team that had some hopes of making the playoffs.

“Is there one thing that happened? It’s not one thing. It’s a series of things that have happened, and probably a little bit more in the last three weeks, that has escalated since probably around the trade deadline,” Briere said.

Tortorella, known for his fiery and direct coaching style, had a record of 97-107-33 with the Flyers and was fired with a year remaining on his contract.

Brad Shaw calls out to his team in the 1st period

The Flyers have not won the Stanley Cup since their last title in 1975, and their most recent appearance in the Stanley Cup Final was in 2010

Briere praised Tortorella for his work last season, guiding the Flyers to the final game of the season with meaningful hockey to play. The Flyers were expected to finish near the bottom of the NHL, but Tortorella helped them exceed those expectations.

Briere had called for patience again this season, even with the rise of rookie star Matvei Michkov, who impressed with 54 points in 72 games. However, Tortorella faced criticism when he scratched or benched Michkov for long stretches, saying it was part of his tough-love approach to help Michkov grow.

“Not everybody is able to take the hard coaching that John Tortorella put on Matvei. I’ve been amazed by how he’s responded to it,” Briere said. “You’ve seen him get benched, you’ve seen him get scratched, and what does he do? He comes back, and all he wants to do is stick it back to you, or stick it back to Torts.”

The Flyers have struggled due to years of poor drafting, bad talent evaluation, and the frequent turnover of coaches, with Tortorella becoming the sixth in just 10 years. Briere, a former Flyers player, was named general manager in 2023 and promised to rebuild the team from the ground up.

He openly embraced the idea of a rebuild, a term management had avoided in the past.

The Flyers traded Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, and Scott Laughton at the trade deadline and faced a difficult 1-6 homestand earlier this month.

“It was tough reading some of the comments that were out there that, OK, this year was going to be the year,” Briere said. “I knew in my guts that we were still going to go through at least another tough year. This year, I knew it was still we weren’t out of the woods, and we were still part of that deep down rebuild, and we’ve seen that this year.”

The journey to the playoffs continues — just without Tortorella at the helm.

“Torts is a complicated man, he’s a complicated coach,” Briere said. “He’s a blast to work with because he challenges you. I truly believe he made me a better GM. I loved working with him, and I think he loved working with me. He’s not a ‘yes’ man. He had opinions and he’s earned the rights to share his opinion, and we listened to him.”

In Calgary, the Flames have traded Kuzmenko and Pelletier to the Flyers in exchange for Frost, Farabee, and draft picks

The Calgary Flames traded left wings Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night in exchange for center Morgan Frost and left wing Joel Farabee.

In the deal, Calgary also sent a second-round draft pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick in 2028 to Philadelphia.

Kuzmenko, 28, was scratched from Calgary’s lineup Thursday night, while Pelletier, 23, was pulled after the first period of the Flames’ 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Frost, 25, played the first half of Philadelphia’s 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders. The Flyers drafted him 27th overall in 2017. This season, he has 11 goals and 14 assists in 49 games.

Farabee, 24, was selected 14th overall by Philadelphia in the 2018 draft. The 6-foot, 186-pound winger has eight goals and 11 assists in 50 games.

Kuzmenko was traded again a year after the Vancouver Canucks sent him to Calgary. He had four goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season and was a healthy scratch earlier in January.

Pelletier had four goals and seven assists in 23 games for Calgary.

Islanders look to extend their winning run in Philadelphia rematch

The New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers will face off again on Thursday night in Philadelphia, marking the third meeting between the two teams in just two weeks.

The Flyers won the first game 5-3 on January 16, but the Islanders have been on a strong run since, winning all five games they’ve played, including a 3-1 victory in the rematch last Friday.

Now, the two teams will meet again for the final match of their three-game January series. Their last matchup of the season is scheduled for April 12 in Philadelphia. Both teams are looking for more wins as they remain behind other teams in the standings.

Despite their recent success, the Islanders are still in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, just one point behind the Flyers.

The Islanders have allowed only seven goals in their last five games, with another solid defensive performance in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

“On this stretch, we’ve gotten (back) to our brand of hockey,” said Islanders captain Anders Lee. “We executed (our style) well. It feels natural, the way it’s come together.”

Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves in the game, and Simon Holmstrom scored twice and added an assist. Bo Horvat also scored, bringing his total to eight goals in the last 10 games.

“Ilya was outstanding in that game,” said Islanders coach Patrick Roy, highlighting Sorokin’s performance.

The Islanders scored four goals in the third period to turn a close game into a dominant win. However, Roy believes there’s still room for improvement.

Philadelphia Flyers celebrates after scoring

“How many times have I said (that) you don’t need to be perfect to win hockey games?” Roy said. “That’s exactly what we did. We gave ourselves a chance tonight.”

Meanwhile, the Flyers struggled in their last game on Wednesday, suffering a 5-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Samuel Ersson allowed four goals before being pulled halfway through the game. Coach John Tortorella said after the game that the Flyers struggled with killing penalties.

“We still think we’re there. It just got away from us with not being able to kill penalties,” Tortorella said.

Tortorella confirmed that Ivan Fedotov, who replaced Ersson, will start in goal against the Islanders. He expressed the hope that playing again so soon will help the team move past their loss.

“That’s all we’re looking for,” Tortorella said.

The Flyers have lost three of their last four games, managing just two goals in those three defeats. One of those losses came in the most recent game against the Islanders, where Tyson Foerster scored first but the Islanders came back with goals from Brock Nelson, earning a 3-1 win.

“We got beat tonight, fair and square,” said Flyers forward Scott Laughton. “We’re lucky that we get another division game (Thursday), but we got beat tonight. It’s a good hockey team, but we need to be better at this time of year.”

Devils and Flyers Battle for Divisional Supremacy in Monday Night Matchup

The New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers face off in a Metropolitan Division matchup on Monday at 7 p.m. EST. The Devils are coming off a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens, improving their overall record to 28-17-6. Meanwhile, the Flyers, with a 22-22-6 record, aim to build on their competitive divisional performance. This marks the second meeting between the teams this season, with Philadelphia taking the first game 3-1.

Scoring Consistency Key for Devils’ Success

New Jersey’s ability to score consistently has been a hallmark of their season. With an impressive 28 wins in games where they net at least three goals, their offensive potency could be a decisive factor in this game. In contrast, the Flyers have faced challenges on both ends of the ice, with a -21 scoring differential, having conceded 168 goals while scoring 147. Both teams’ ability to convert scoring opportunities will be critical in this contest.

Devils vs Flyers

Standout Players to Watch on Both Sides

Key players will play pivotal roles in this matchup. For the Flyers, Owen Tippett leads with 14 goals and 16 assists, supported by Morgan Frost’s recent contributions of four goals and three assists over the last 10 games. On the Devils’ side, Nico Hischier has been a consistent performer with 24 goals and 19 assists, while Jack Hughes has added four goals and seven assists in his last 10 games. These stars will be essential in driving offensive momentum.

Over the last 10 games, the Flyers have a 5-4-1 record, averaging 2.7 goals per game while allowing 2.4. The Devils have gone 4-3-3 in the same span, scoring 2.5 goals and conceding 2.3. With disciplined play and minimal penalties from both sides, this matchup promises a competitive clash. The Flyers’ previous victory adds intrigue, as the Devils look to even the season series and strengthen their divisional standing.

Maple Leafs, with Auston Matthews back, face the Flyers in Toronto

With team captain Auston Matthews back from injury, the Toronto Maple Leafs will look to extend their winning streak to four games on Sunday night as they host the Philadelphia Flyers.

Matthews returned to action on Saturday night after missing six games due to an upper-body injury. He scored an empty-net goal and added two assists in a 6-4 home win against the Boston Bruins.

“I felt good,” said Matthews, a five-time All-Star and three-time NHL goal-scoring leader, including last season (69 goals). “I thought my linemates made it pretty easy for me tonight, too. The chemistry was there.”

His linemates were Matthew Knies, who scored his first career hat trick and had two assists, and Mitchell Marner, who netted an empty-net goal and recorded four assists.

“It felt incredible,” Knies said. “Felt the luck back on my side and that was a good game, a good overall effort from all of us in here.”

The Maple Leafs and Flyers will meet for the first time this season, with a rematch scheduled for Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The Flyers will complete a six-game road trip with a chance to split the series. They lost three of the first five games, including a 5-2 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

Toronto was 3-3-0 during Matthews’ recent absence.

“(Matthews) is our captain, he’s a great player, we all know that,” said Toronto coach Craig Berube. “Having him in the lineup gives you a lot more options, obviously, and he just drives the pace of play. He’s an extremely hard worker, plays 200 feet. The pace goes up for everybody.”

Matthews missed nine games in November due to injury, and Toronto went 7-2-0 without him.

Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)

“It’s not always going to be pretty, but just to be able to find a way to win whether it’s through good goaltending, good special teams, it’s not going to be perfect every night,” Matthews said. “Good teams find a way to win, and obviously you like to be able to win in different ways. We’ve shown we can do that.”

Flyers coach John Tortorella said his team deserved more than a 1-2-0 record over their last three games.

“I thought we could have had points in all of them,” Tortorella said after practice on Saturday. “We didn’t, we just keep playing. We keep on working on our game, what we’re doing, corrections when we need to make corrections.

Just the last game, I thought we played well. I watched the tape yesterday against Vegas, I thought we could’ve come away with points there.”

Philadelphia’s power play has been effective, scoring in the past two games, both times by Travis Konecny.

“It’s clicking right now,” said Owen Tippett, who assisted on both power-play goals. “I think we’ve done a good job with the group we have out there and communicating. I think we’ve done a good job at kind of filling holes. I know we have our positions, but if guys see a gap open, they go to that gap and it makes it easier for the guy (with the) puck to have those options.”

Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, and Jamie Drysdale complete the new power-play setup.

“Hopefully, it keeps on growing because there is a little bit of chemistry there,” Tortorella said. “I think Jamie’s done a better job, too, up top. That’s been a weakness of ours during the years, finding someone that can run it up top. I think Jamie’s feeling more comfortable there.”

Golden Knights defeat Flyers 4-1 with a three-goal second period in Las Vegas

Ilya Samsonov made 23 saves to secure his fifth straight win, and Pavel Dorofeyev scored the game-winner during a three-goal second period, as the Vegas Golden Knights came back to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Thursday in Las Vegas.

Mark Stone contributed a goal and an assist, while Nicolas Hague, Alexander Holtz, and Tanner Pearson also scored. Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin each had two assists for Vegas, which improved to 5-0-1 in its last six matchups with the Flyers.

Samsonov improved to 13-2-0 against Philadelphia.

Tyson Foerster and Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers, and Aleksei Kolosov made 22 saves.

Philadelphia took the lead 1-0 just 21 seconds into the game when Foerster scored off a rebound from Noah Cates’ shot for his fifth goal in the last seven games.

Vegas, which had only four shots on goal in the first period, responded in the second with three goals on their first two shots.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

Stone tied the game at 51 seconds, redirecting Eichel’s backhand pass into the crease past Kolosov. Hague then gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead at 2:13, driving around the net and scoring with a wraparound shot.

Dorofeyev extended the lead to 3-1 at 18:22 with a powerful shot through traffic from the right faceoff circle.

Holtz made it 4-1 at 2:46 of the third with a shot that deflected off defenseman Jamie Drysdale’s leg and sailed past Kolosov’s glove.

The Flyers cut the deficit to 4-2 with Konecny’s power-play goal at 4:56, his career-high eighth of the season.

Philadelphia pulled Kolosov for an extra attacker with 2:20 left, but Pearson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:24.

The strong Golden Knights aim to complete a sweep of the Flyers at home in Las Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights start the new year leading the Pacific Division with 53 points and the best point percentage in the NHL at .716, following a strong 10-2-0 run in December.

However, they head into their Thursday game against the Philadelphia Flyers in Las Vegas feeling disappointed.

This is because they ended 2024 with a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on New Year’s Eve, where the Golden Knights blew a 2-0 lead in the final 23 minutes.

The loss ended Vegas’ six-game winning streak, which was their longest since a seven-game streak to start the 2023-24 season.

“I know when I watch (the video), I’m going to be (ticked) because those are points we should have had,” said Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy. “We’re a better team than that, but they’re gone.”

Cassidy said his team lost some intensity after getting the early lead.

“Kind of self-inflicted plays,” Cassidy said. “We probably stopped playing halfway through the second period the way we needed to keep pushing, and it caught up to us.”

“We just have got to stick with our game plan,” said Vegas defenseman Noah Hanifin, who scored the goal to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead. “I think in the third period we sat back a little too much. No matter what the score is, you’ve got to stay on your toes and attack. I thought in the third we got away from that, which is not normal for us.”

The Golden Knights took only their fourth home loss in 19 games (15-4-0) and will play five of their next six games at T-Mobile Arena.

The Flyers, who are 2-2-0 on their six-game road trip, are coming off a 4-0 win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

It was their second win in four nights during their three-game trip through California, following a 3-1 victory at Anaheim on Saturday and a 5-4 loss at Los Angeles on Sunday.

Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)

After their Thursday game in Las Vegas, the Flyers will wrap up their trip with a game at Toronto on Sunday.

“We’ve got a long trip here,” said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella after the win over the Sharks. “We’ve got teams coming up here that are very good hockey teams. Hopefully, we get some confidence from a couple of wins and bring it to them.”

A key concern for the Flyers is whether their No. 1 goalie, Samuel Ersson, will be available for the next two games.

Ersson made 15 saves against the Sharks before leaving with a lower-body injury after the second period. Aleksei Kolosov finished the game with seven saves in the combined shutout.

Ersson (9-6-2, 3.02 goals-against average) has missed time this season due to a groin injury. He was hurt when San Jose’s Luke Kunin collided with him in front of the net, but Ersson stayed in the game until the end of the period.

“I think it happened in the collision. … The way it’s gone for Sam, it’s a concern,” Tortorella said.

This game will be the second of the two matchups between the teams this season. Vegas won the first meeting 5-4 in a shootout on Nov. 25 in Philadelphia, with Jack Eichel scoring the shootout winner and adding a goal and an assist.

Samuel Ersson and Aleksei Kolosov combine to shut out struggling Sharks in Flyers’ win

Samuel Ersson and Aleksei Kolosov teamed up to stop all 22 shots they faced, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, handing the Sharks their eighth consecutive loss.

Ersson made 15 saves in two periods before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury. Kolosov finished the game, saving all seven shots he faced in the third period, helping the Flyers bounce back from a loss.

Nick Seeler, Ryan Poehling, Travis Konecny, and Egor Zamula each scored for the Flyers, while Jamie Drysdale and Bobby Brink both had two assists.

In the losing effort, Alexandar Georgiev stopped 30 of 34 shots.

Seeler put Philadelphia ahead less than six minutes into the game by banking a shot off the back of Georgiev and into the net from behind the goal line.

Tyler Toffoli nearly tied the game for San Jose with under two minutes remaining in the first period, but his shot off a faceoff in the offensive zone hit the post.

Philadelphia Flyers topped the visiting Detroit Red Wings

Poehling doubled the Flyers’ lead at 12:09 of the second period. He collected a rebound from Zamula, skated around Georgiev, and put the puck into the empty net.

Konecny added to the lead less than two minutes later with a one-timed shot on the power play, breaking Philadelphia’s 0-for-19 power-play drought and making it 3-0 with 6:16 left in the second.

Toffoli had a breakaway late in the second, but Ersson made a glove save to deny him.

Zamula extended the lead to 4-0 at 2:30 of the third when his shot from the corner deflected off a Sharks defenseman and into the net.

The Flyers outshot the Sharks 34-22 and blocked 20 shots compared to the Sharks’ 11. The Sharks, who haven’t won since December 12, remain in last place in the Pacific Division.

Flyers focus on improving defense against the Ducks

Both the Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks have had several days to reflect on their most recent loss.

After the holiday break, both teams are set to face off on Saturday in Anaheim.

Philadelphia has struggled recently, losing four of their last five games, including a tough 7-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first game of a six-game road trip. The Flyers allowed four goals in the first period and couldn’t recover against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.

“We’ve had some slow starts,” Flyers winger Noah Cates said. “But when we do (the right things), we’re really hard to play against.”

During their current 1-4-0 stretch, coach John Tortorella’s team has given up 28 goals.

“It was a little bit of everything,” Tortorella said. “We get back, we try to get better.”

One player who needs to improve is rookie Matvei Michkov, who hasn’t scored in eight straight games and has not recorded a point in the last six. He also has a minus-11 rating in his last five games.

“‘Mich’ has leveled off,” Tortorella said. “It’s been a bit of a struggle for him. He was a very important part of giving us life on the power play. He continues to work at it.”

Michkov and the Flyers will look for a more consistent performance against a Ducks team that has also faced its share of challenges this season.

Anaheim Ducks (NHL)

Anaheim has lost two of its last three games. In the one win during that stretch, the Ducks had to come from behind, rallying from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to beat the Utah Hockey Club 5-4 in a shootout.

However, the momentum from that victory didn’t carry over into Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, marking the Ducks’ seventh loss in 10 games (3-6-1).

“I love the effort. I thought we competed hard,” Anaheim coach Greg Cronin said.

The Ducks have struggled offensively, ranking last in the league with just 82 goals this season. Only two other teams have scored fewer than 90 goals as of Friday, the Nashville Predators (84) and Detroit Red Wings (88).

While the Flyers have scored a decent 108 goals, they have allowed 130, which ranks as the third-highest total in the NHL as of Friday.

The Ducks, on the other hand, have given up 103 goals, putting them in the middle of the pack. The strength of their defense has been goaltenders John Gibson and Lukas Dostal, though Gibson had to leave Monday’s game early after taking a high stick near his eye.

Despite this, the Ducks fought hard before Dostal gave up two goals in the final 11 minutes.

“The effort was there. We were battling until the end,” veteran defenseman Radko Gudas said. “The boys left everything out there. We gave it our all. Unfortunately, we had some costly mistakes, and they made us pay. They’re an experienced team, and they made us pay for those mistakes we made in the third.”

This will be the first meeting between the Flyers and Ducks this season. The teams will face each other again in Philadelphia on January 11.

Sidney Crosby Ties Lemieux in Assists as Penguins Dominate Flyers with 7-3 Victory

Sidney Crosby’s stellar performance, including a goal and three assists, led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a decisive 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at PPG Paints Arena. Crosby’s contributions brought his NHL assist total to 1,033, tying Mario Lemieux for the most in Penguins history. Reflecting on this milestone, Crosby humbly acknowledged the achievement, emphasizing the difference in the number of games played between himself and Lemieux. His leadership and playmaking were instrumental as the Penguins extended their positive streak, winning three out of their last four games.

Rickard Rakell added a goal and two assists, while Michael Bunting scored twice to bolster the Penguins’ offense. Bryan Rust also had a goal and an assist, with key contributions from Evgeni Malkin and Erik Karlsson, who each provided two assists. Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 24 saves to secure the win. Meanwhile, the Flyers struggled defensively, pulling starting goalie Samuel Ersson after he allowed five goals on 14 shots, with Aleksei Kolosov stepping in for relief. Sean Couturier, Noah Cates, and Egor Zamula were the goal scorers for Philadelphia, who have now lost four of their last five games.

Sidney Crosby Ties Lemieux in Assists as Penguins Dominate Flyers with 7-3 Victory

The game started with a flurry of goals in the first period. Bryan Rust opened the scoring for Pittsburgh early, and after Zamula equalized for Philadelphia, the Penguins surged ahead. Rakell, Bunting, and Philip Tomasino each scored, with Tomasino’s goal following a masterful setup from Crosby. The Flyers struggled to contain Crosby’s line and faltered on special teams, allowing two power-play goals. Flyers coach John Tortorella noted the team’s shortcomings, emphasizing the need for improvement.

Philadelphia fought back in the second period, cutting the deficit to 4-3 with goals from Cates and Couturier. The Flyers outshot the Penguins 12-5 in the frame, showing signs of resilience. However, Michael Bunting’s second goal late in the period restored a two-goal cushion for Pittsburgh, dampening Philadelphia’s comeback hopes. Despite the Flyers’ effort, the Penguins’ ability to capitalize on their chances proved decisive.

The Penguins sealed their victory in the third period with Crosby scoring an empty-net goal and Blake Lizotte adding a power-play tally in the final seconds. Crosby’s dominant performance underscored his status as one of the NHL’s all-time greats, marking his 42nd career four-point game. The Penguins and Flyers will now head into the holiday break with contrasting trajectories, preparing to resume play on December 28.

Wings secure 6-4 victory after Flyers’ rally

Patrick Kane scored the go-ahead goal at 7:22 of the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings held on for a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night.

J.T. Compher and Lucas Raymond each contributed a goal and an assist, while Alex DeBrincat, Michael Rasmussen, and Joe Veleno scored the other goals. Dylan Larkin had two assists for Detroit, which has won three of its last four games.

Alex Lyon, who was playing his first game since November 25, made 15 saves.

For the Flyers, Travis Konecny, Noah Cates, Ryan Poehling, and Owen Tippett scored. Philadelphia is 2-4-1 in its last seven games. Samuel Ersson made 18 saves.

The Flyers took the lead just 1:06 into the game when Konecny scored on a breakaway, sending a backhand shot through Lyon’s legs. Joel Farabee and Sean Couturier assisted on the play.

The Red Wings got a four-minute power play late in the period when Tippett was called for a double minor for high sticking.

Compher scored his first goal in 22 games during the power play, redirecting a pass from Dylan Larkin.

Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)

Detroit went up 2-1 with 9:45 left in the second period. Kane skated into the right circle and passed to the opposite circle, where DeBrincat one-timed the puck past Ersson.

The Flyers quickly tied the game 25 seconds later, as Cates redirected a Tyson Foerster shot.

Detroit regained the lead with 3:55 remaining in the second. Compher won a faceoff, and Rasmussen fired a shot that slipped past Ersson’s glove.

A little over a minute later, Veleno stole the puck in his own zone, leading to a breakaway. He received a pass from Christian Fischer and scored with a shot that went just under the crossbar, putting the Wings ahead 4-2.

Poehling scored in front off a feed from Couturier at 3:50 of the third period to make it 4-3. Tippett tied the game with less than two minutes left, carrying the puck into Detroit’s zone, skating around Lyon, and putting the puck in the net.

The Red Wings regained the lead 5-4 when Kane scored his first goal in 11 games, firing a shot from the left circle off a pass from Moritz Seider.

Raymond sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Red Wings look to bounce back against Flyers after standout performance by Scott Laughton

The Detroit Red Wings have become experts at creating close games. Out of their last 13 games, only one was decided by more than two goals.

Unfortunately, they haven’t had the best luck. The Red Wings are 5-5-3 during this stretch, which included five straight losses, two of which were in overtime.

However, they did manage a crucial 4-2 win over Toronto on Saturday, which was almost another one-goal game. Lucas Raymond scored an empty-net goal at the end to seal the victory.

“Again, I may sound like a broken record, but what is a little bit frustrating in our big picture is that five-game stretch, and our process and underlying numbers, they are easy to pick apart when you’re winning and not as easy to pick apart when you’re losing,” coach Derek Lalonde said.

“Whatever the reality is, the bottom line is finding ways to win games. We need to slip some of those tight games, and we’ve done that in two of our last three to get some traction here.”

Defenseman Jeff Petry scored his first goal of the season against the Maple Leafs, and that win started a stretch where Detroit will play seven of eight games at home this month.

“Looking at the big picture before Christmas break, we had five games and we set a goal,” Petry said. “Our goal was to make sure we start off right with a win. We did what we needed to do (Saturday) to get the win. It’s a good start for the week ahead.”

Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)

Philadelphia defeated Detroit 4-1 two nights before, with Scott Laughton having a career night. He scored all of the Flyers’ goals, including two empty-netters.

Like the Red Wings, the Flyers have also not played since Saturday. They’ve lost four of their last six games, including a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday.

Samuel Ersson has started in goal for three of the last four games since returning from a lower-body injury.

“(Saturday) was a step forward in some areas where I’m trying to make some work on, but obviously when you get the loss there’s definitely other things that you want to keep working at,” Ersson said. “I’ll keep going here.”

A big topic of discussion after Monday’s practice was the first line of Sean Couturier, Joel Farabee, and Travis Konecny. While Konecny leads the team with 15 goals and 36 points, coach John Tortorella has not been happy with their defense.

“I think they’ve been awful defensively,” he said. “They’ve been brutal. They make me dizzy, they spin so much in our end zone. They need to stop in our end zone. Once rush coverage is over, and we haven’t grabbed the puck, and we’re in the corner — it’s called arrivals. I always talk about arrivals; how you arrive on that rush coverage is key to coverage.

“It’s key to getting (the puck) back,” Tortorella added. “If you’re spinning all over the place, no one knows where you’re going to be. No one knows if you’re going to be the first man, the low man, or you’re going to be covering the point. That’s where your defense ends up playing in between. … But they’re smart enough people and they’re good enough players that they’ll rectify that.”
