With a 1-0 loss against Kevin Muscat's Yokohama F. Marinos, Sydney FC was left to bemoan a slew of missed opportunities.

Substitute In the 81st minute, Ryotaro Tsunoda scored the game's sole goal, giving the Japanese club their second win in three Group H games.

Second-placed Marinos went four points ahead of third-placed Sydney with their win in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Sydneysiders will be anxious for a lot more clinical effort when they face Marinos again on Monday night, with only the best club from each group assured a place in the round of 16. (AEST).

Adam Le Fondre squandered at least three scoring opportunities and midfielder Max Burgess had an outage header which was saved by the goalie Yohei Takaoka.

Jeonbuk of South Korea is in first place in Group H with seven points, five more than Sydney.
