Clemson University’s defensive tackle, DeMonte Capehart, found himself in legal trouble last week when he was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm on school premises, as reported by the Associated Press, citing ESPN.
According to online records, Capehart’s arrest on February 6 stemmed from charges of “unlawful possession of a firearm on school property” and “failure to exercise due care” while operating a motor vehicle, as outlined by Jon Blau of the Post and Courier.
Capehart was able to secure his release by posting a $10,000 bond for the firearms charge and a $232.50 bond for the traffic offense, as confirmed by the Associated Press.
In response to the incident, the Clemson athletic department issued a statement clarifying that Capehart is not actively involved in team activities at present, pending the conclusion of all necessary procedures by the university and the league.
Initially joining Clemson as a highly-touted 4-star recruit in the class of 2020, Capehart had received offers from prominent schools like Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina before committing to the Tigers. Despite his recent legal issues, he is expected to continue playing for Clemson into the 2024 season.
During the 2023 season, Capehart featured in 12 games, contributing with one sack, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, 15 tackles, and five tackles for loss.
The Tigers wrapped up their 2023 campaign with a 9-4 record, capped off by a victory over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl.
