Tottenham Hotspur have signed Ashley Phillips, with Blackburn Rovers admitting that the transfer was difficult. In a ‘difficult’ transfer, Blackburn Rovers lost Wonderkid defender Ashley Phillips to Tottenham Hotspur.
After a lengthy pursuit, Tottenham was able to bring Phillips to North London. Tottenham was close to signing Phillips, according to the Daily Mail in August 2022.
However, the defender ended up staying with Blackburn, appearing in 14 first-team games last season. Spurs eventually got their man, securing Phillips in a deal worth around £2 million after some bizarre haggling.

Spurs were said to be close to a £5 million deal before Rovers allegedly doubled their asking price.
That decision backfired when a release clause became effective, allowing Tottenham to acquire Phillips for even less than expected.
Gregg Broughton, Blackburn’s sporting director, has now spoken out about Phillips and his move to Tottenham.
Broughton, talking to The Lancashire Telegraph, said that the transfer was not easy because of the release clause in the contract.
According to Broughton, Phillips wanted to leave Rovers last summer, but Rovers persuaded him to stay by incorporating a number of clauses into a new contract offer.
Tottenham took full advantage of the release clause, which has been described as ‘one of the most complicated’ ever seen.
Broughton added that the release clause’s value could have been higher if Phillips had played more games last season, but the club chose a different path.
“It was not easy, but it is what I saw already,” Broughton said. “When I got there, they told me it was a player who did not want to sign a contract.
We worked very hard to try and get the player to sign one. He was considered a scholar in the current football rules, and he had not signed a professional contract. He could use a seven-day notice to leave the club, and it would cost about £200,000,” he explained.
“To make that come to a reality, we had to put in some special conditions to convince him to sign the contract,” Broughton said. “One of these was a really tricky release clause, which our legal team considered one of the hardest they have ever dealt with.
There were several conditions involved in it, and by Easter, we figured out he had to play a certain number of additional games to qualify for the higher price,” he added.
“We, the board of directors, and Jon, our head coach, all agreed that Jon had to pick the best team during that part of the season. Ash had to earn his place in the team, and it wasn’t about a clause that would increase his pay.
We understood that playing him more could have meant more money, but it was not just a few minutes on the field that would do it. He had to play a particular amount of time for that to happen. Putting him in for just the last five minutes would not have made a difference,” he explained.

Phillips has tremendous potential and has the potential to become a first-team regular at Tottenham.
Ange Postecoglou, for one, has already expressed his admiration for Phillips. The Spurs appear to be putting together a formidable backline for the future.
Alfie Dorrington, 18, is emerging as a genuine talent and is already training with Tottenham’s first team.
Tottenham are also set to sign Hajduk Split teenager Luka Vuskovic, who will join the club in 2025 as one of Europe’s top teenage defenders.
Add in the fact that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven should be in their prime years, and Spurs appear to be well-positioned for the future.
