Despite much speculation surrounding a potential showdown against undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns, The Rock has reportedly not yet committed to competing at WrestleMania 40.
As per Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), The Rock expresses interest in participating in this year’s WrestleMania, but it remains “not a done deal” at this point.
Meltzer further mentioned that there’s a notion of possibly arranging Reigns vs. The Rock for the next event in Saudi Arabia, but The Rock’s preference is to have the match take place at WrestleMania.
Following the announcement on Tuesday that The Rock was appointed to the board of directors for TKO Group Holdings, he made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take and discussed the prospect of facing Reigns.
The Rock acknowledged that there is “a chance” the match could happen and emphasized that if they square off at WrestleMania, it would make for the biggest WrestleMania of all time.
He continued by stating that he is a “long-gamer” who aims to build towards the match and craft a compelling narrative, fueling speculation that he might be considering the match for a later date rather than WrestleMania 40.
Although The Rock didn’t delve into specifics, his remarks hinted that he might be inclined to target WrestleMania 41 for the match instead of WrestleMania 40.
Such a decision would allow for a proper buildup, potentially setting the stage for Cody Rhodes to have his rematch against Reigns after losing to the Tribal Chief in the main event of WrestleMania 39.
Should WWE opt for the Reigns vs. Rhodes rematch followed by Reigns vs. The Rock the subsequent year, it would likely satisfy fans, and The Rock could even play a role at WrestleMania 40 to lay the groundwork for WrestleMania 41.
While the possibility of The Rock vs. Reigns at WrestleMania 40 remains on the table, a decision will need to be made soon, given that WrestleMania is just over two months away.
