The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly interested in interviewing Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald for their head coach position, according to information from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
However, the Seahawks will have to wait until the Ravens’ season concludes before they can proceed with the interview process. This poses a potential challenge for Seattle, particularly if the Ravens advance to the Super Bowl, as it would mean a two-week delay before they can engage in discussions with Macdonald.
Macdonald has also been in talks with the Washington Commanders for their head coaching vacancy.
The Seahawks parted ways with their longtime head coach, Pete Carroll, on January 10, following the team’s failure to secure a playoff spot, finishing the 2023 season with a 9-8 record.
Seattle’s defensive struggles were a significant factor in their third-place finish in the NFC West, conceding an average of 23.6 points and 371.4 yards per game, ranking as the third and eighth-worst in the NFL, respectively.
In contrast, Macdonald led one of the league’s top defenses. Despite Lamar Jackson’s impressive performance in 2023, Baltimore’s defense played a pivotal role in the team’s 13-4 record, allowing a league-best average of 16.5 points per game during the regular season.
This defensive prowess continued in the playoffs, as the Ravens held the Houston Texans to just 10 points in their divisional-round victory. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for only 175 yards, while the Texans managed a mere 38 rush yards as a team on 14 attempts.
Throughout their head coaching search, the Seahawks have interviewed several strong candidates on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Notable individuals include Ben Johnson (Detroit Lions offensive coordinator), Dan Quinn (Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator), Bobby Slowik (Houston Texans offensive coordinator), Ejiro Evero (Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator), Patrick Graham (Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator), Mike Kafka (New York Giants offensive coordinator), and Frank Smith (Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator), as reported by Schefter.
If the Ravens do not advance past the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, it is plausible to anticipate a meeting between Macdonald and the Seahawks shortly afterward.
