Fans recently responded to Caroline Garcia’s defense of Novak Djokovic against critics who wrote him off after his defeat at the 2024 Australian Open.
Djokovic’s quest for an 11th Melbourne Slam title was dashed when he lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in a hard-fought match.
The loss not only denied Djokovic his 25th Major title but also ended his impressive 33-match winning streak at the Australian Open.
In the aftermath of the match, many fans and pundits began questioning Djokovic’s status as the top player on the Tour. In response to this skepticism, French tennis star Caroline Garcia took to social media to challenge those who were quick to dismiss Djokovic based on a single tournament result.
“I was scrolling a bit and basically Djokovic was the GOAT 2 weeks ago, still so young, moving so well beyond of this age, going for an other Slam once again, a true inspiration. And now he is too old, we are in a complete new era, he is finished for tennis … this is funny,” Garcia posted on X. Fans joined the conversation, expressing their thoughts on Garcia’s post.
One fan drew comparisons between Djokovic’s current situation and the later stages of Serena Williams’ career, when doubts were raised about her ability to remain at the top of the game. The fan also highlighted Garcia’s previous silence regarding the scrutiny faced by Williams.
“The same narrative Serena got that all of y’all were noticeably silent for,” a fan posted on X. Another fan pointed out that Roger Federer faced similar scrutiny many years before his eventual retirement, suggesting that Djokovic’s situation might not be as dire as some believe.
“Well, that‘s what Roger Federer was also confronted with, 10 years before his actual retirement!” the fan posted.
