Denis Shapovalov recently extended his congratulations to his compatriots for clinching a spot in the 2024 Davis Cup Group Stage Finals for the fifth time.
Team Canada, under the leadership of Captain Frank Dancevic, secured a thrilling 3-1 victory over Team Korea in a captivating tie at the IGA Stadium in Montreal.
Established in 1900, the Davis Cup remains the pinnacle team competition in men’s tennis. The Finals consist of 16 nations organized into four groups of four, with the Qualifiers and Play-offs held in February and the Finals scheduled for September.
Team Canada boasts a talented and diverse roster, featuring seasoned veterans Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil alongside rising stars like Gabriel Diallo, Alexis Galarneau, and Liam Draxl.
In the opening two singles matches, Diallo and Pospisil outclassed Team Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo and Hong Seong-chan in straight sets, providing Canada with an early advantage in the tie.
However, the Korean duo of Nam Ji-sung and Song Min-kyu emerged victorious in a thrilling three-set encounter against Galarneau and Pospisil in the doubles match, marking Canada’s first setback in the tournament. Nonetheless, Diallo’s triumph over Hong in the third singles match sealed Canada’s berth in the Group Stage Finals.
Shapovalov took to social media on Sunday, February 4, to express his support for his fellow countrymen.
“Way to go boys!!! 🔥 FINALS!!! 💪🏼👏🏼,” Shapovalov wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
