Former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo is making his return to the NFL, joining Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff with the New England Patriots.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, McAdoo will serve as an offensive assistant for the Patriots.
Albert Breer of The MMQB highlighted the reunion between McAdoo and new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, noting their previous collaboration on the Green Bay Packers’ coaching staff from 2012 to 2013.
McAdoo took a break from coaching during the 2023 season following his departure as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Since his tenure with the Giants from 2014 to 2017, where he served as head coach for the final two seasons, McAdoo has not stayed with a single team for more than a year.
After leaving the Giants, McAdoo spent two seasons away from the NFL before returning as quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020 under Doug Marrone’s leadership. He later joined the Dallas Cowboys as a consultant during the 2021 season.
The Patriots are bringing back key figures from the Packers’ coaching staff of the mid-2010s. Eliot Wolf, who held the position of director of pro personnel during McAdoo and Van Pelt’s tenure, is now in his third season as the director of scouting for New England.
As Mayo embarks on his inaugural season as a head coach, he has been assembling a seasoned coaching staff. Among his moves, he elevated DeMarcus Covington, a member of the Patriots organization since 2017, to the role of defensive coordinator.
McAdoo’s initial season as head coach of the Giants saw success, leading the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. However, his tenure took a downturn, resulting in his dismissal midway through the 2017 season following a 2-10 start.
The Patriots are aiming for a rebound in the upcoming 2024 season after a disappointing performance. They concluded the previous season at the bottom of the AFC East, marking their first such finish since 2000, and suffered 13 losses for the first time in 31 years.
