Chelsea legend John Terry showed signs of frustration with Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana during the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday (February 11).
Onana has faced criticism this season due to a series of noticeable errors in his debut season with United. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has conceded 51 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions while managing to keep 10 clean sheets.
However, Onana delivered an impressive performance during United’s win at Villa Park, making eight crucial saves, including a notable diving stop to deny John McGinn’s long-range shot.
Despite his commendable performance, Onana drew Terry’s ire for his perceived habit of slowing down the game when taking goal kicks or handling the ball. The former Chelsea captain expressed his discontent on X (formerly Twitter) during the match:
“Onana is getting on my nerves, slowing the game down, and then keeps giving it away. Catch it and stay in your box!”
Known for his adept ball-playing skills, Onana was a significant signing for Erik ten Hag, who secured his services from Inter Milan for £47.5 million. Onana’s abilities with the ball were highlighted when he was nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or after an impressive campaign with Inter in 2022-23.
Despite the criticism, Onana played a vital role in securing a hard-fought victory for Ten Hag’s side against their top-four rivals. Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay found the net for United, while Douglas Luis initially equalized for the hosts.
