Real Madrid forward Rodrygo reflects on his initial encounter with iconic former manager Zinedine Zidane.
Rodrygo, who joined Madrid from Santos in 2019, had his first interaction with Zidane shortly after the Frenchman’s return for a second stint as manager.
Zidane’s tenure saw remarkable success, including three consecutive UEFA Champions League triumphs (2016, 2017, 2018) and two La Liga titles.
Rodrygo, part of the La Liga-winning squad in 2020, admitted feeling overwhelmed upon joining a squad filled with top-tier talent. He shared (via Madrid Xtra):
“On my first day at Real Madrid, I was a little embarrassed to arrive, with so many great players.”
Recalling his first encounter with Zidane, Rodrygo confessed to feeling intimidated:
“The coach was Zidane, when I saw him for the first time, the truth is that I was scared. But it was a very nice moment, then I spoke to him. That day was a dream.”
Zidane’s adept management contributed significantly to Madrid’s success, with an impressive 174 wins in 263 games during his time in charge.
In 2020, Zidane praised Rodrygo’s development, emphasizing his positive attributes. He remarked (via Tribuna):
“He’s okay, he’s a player who’s changing little by little, working hard. He’s a lovely boy, good, and in the end, we benefit from his qualities.”
Since joining Real Madrid, Rodrygo has become a key figure, amassing 50 goals and 39 assists in 199 appearances while securing nine major trophies.
