A Bundesliga expert has provided an update on Xabi Alonso’s future with Bayer Leverkusen, amid speculation linking him to Liverpool.
With Jürgen Klopp’s impending departure from Liverpool at the end of the season, Alonso has emerged as a potential candidate to take over the managerial reins at Anfield. The former Liverpool player, who has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s success, has led the team to a five-point lead over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool supporters are eager for Alonso to return to the club and replicate his success at Leverkusen. However, Sky Germany’s Felix Fischer has indicated that Alonso is likely to stay at Leverkusen for at least one more season.
“I imagine he will be the Liverpool coach one day, but Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said on Sunday that he is sure that Alonso will still be the coach next season,” Fischer stated. “All the top teams do have an eye on him. The boss of Bayern Munich will have an eye on him for someday, as well as Real Madrid.
“It’s going to be a race for Alonso. I don’t think it’ll take place in the summer, but the season after that.”
Alonso himself has addressed the speculation about a potential move to Liverpool, emphasizing his current contentment at Leverkusen.
“At the moment, I’m really happy here, I’m enjoying my work,” Alonso remarked. “Each day it’s a challenge, and we are on a beautiful journey here in Leverkusen. To be honest, I am not at that moment to think about the next step. I am thinking about where I am right now.”
Additionally, Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes expressed confidence that Alonso will remain with the club beyond the current season.
“Yes. I’m sure,” Rolfes affirmed when asked about Alonso’s future. “One [reason] is the contract. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, with the family, and himself, and that he knows what he has in the club. He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there is no change in the team.
“We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that, in addition to contracts, coaches like Xabi but also players who arouse interest from other clubs often keep us with us.”
