Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić has reportedly turned down an opportunity to join Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff and will depart the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
According to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti (via Madrid Universal), Ancelotti extended an invitation to Modric to join his backroom team at Real Madrid. However, the veteran midfielder declined the offer, expressing his desire to continue playing for at least another season.
At 38 years old, Modric is set to leave Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the current season. Despite his intention to prolong his playing career, he has become discontented with his role under Ancelotti this season.
Having signed a one-year contract extension last year, Modric expected regular playing time, which has not materialized under Ancelotti’s management.
The Croatian midfielder has featured in only 11 out of 20 La Liga matches this season, scoring one goal and providing four assists, as Ancelotti has favored other midfield options like Toni Kroos, Jude Bellingham, and Federico Valverde.
Despite receiving a lucrative contract offer from the Saudi Pro League last summer, Modric opted to remain with Real Madrid. Since joining the club in August 2012, he has amassed an impressive collection of 23 major trophies and established himself as a beloved figure at the Bernabeu.
