Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has urged Liverpool to consider ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as a backup option if they fail to secure Xabi Alonso as Jürgen Klopp’s replacement.
Klopp’s impending departure from the Reds has sparked speculation, with Alonso emerging as a potential candidate to take over. Currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso has steered the team to an impressive lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.
However, with other top European clubs eyeing managerial changes and Leverkusen’s strong performance under Alonso, Berbatov believes Liverpool might face challenges in securing Alonso’s services. In such a scenario, he advocates for Tuchel, who is set to leave Bayern Munich after the current season.
Speaking to Betfair, Berbatov emphasized Tuchel’s credentials, highlighting his Champions League triumph and predicting a bright future for the German coach. Despite Alonso being Liverpool’s preferred choice, Berbatov suggests Tuchel as a viable alternative should negotiations with Alonso falter.
Acknowledging the potential reluctance of clubs to take risks, Berbatov underscores Liverpool’s need for success and suggests Tuchel or Alonso as fitting options for the managerial role.
Tuchel’s successful stint with Chelsea, culminating in a Champions League victory, adds weight to Berbatov’s endorsement of the experienced coach as a strong candidate for the Liverpool job.
