Bayern Munich may hold a hidden advantage in their pursuit to outmaneuver Liverpool in the race for Xabi Alonso.
As the 2023/24 season progresses, the spotlight is set to shine on Bayer Leverkusen’s Alonso in the coming months. The manager’s achievements in leading his team towards a potential Bundesliga victory have not gone unnoticed, sparking interest from both Bayern and Liverpool.
With Liverpool seeking a replacement for Jürgen Klopp, who recently announced his departure, and Bayern facing the departure of Thomas Tuchel at the season’s end, Alonso has emerged as a coveted figure for both clubs.
Alonso’s impressive tenure at Leverkusen has fueled speculation linking him with potential moves to either club. According to reports from Caught Offside, German journalist Christian Falk suggests that Bayern could possess a significant advantage in their pursuit of Alonso.
Falk elaborated in his report: “It is no longer a secret that Xabi Alonso is the top candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp.
But FC Bayern now also has Alonso as number one on their wish list. The fact that Tuchel is still allowed to be coach until the summer also has to do with the fact that Bayern is waiting for Alonso.”
He continued, “The Bayern bosses are self-confident because so far they have gotten every coach they wanted. Even Pep Guardiola. They have a trump card in former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Because Rummenigge always kept in touch with Alonso and is considered a confidant of the Spaniard. So Liverpool have got a serious competitor.”
Addressing his plans, Alonso remarked last month, “To be honest I am not at this moment thinking about the next step. I am thinking about where I am right now, and I think I am in a great place which I enjoy. I’m going to be happy if we play well and deserve to win. What’s going to happen in the future… I don’t know and I don’t really care at the moment. Speculation is normal, my focus is here on Bayer Leverkusen.”
