A notable Portuguese psychologist, Filipa Torrinha Nunes, has stirred controversy with her remarks about Cristiano Ronaldo following his recent one-game ban.
The renowned former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker received the suspension for his provocative gestures towards Al-Shabab fans, who were chanting Lionel Messi’s name. The incident occurred during Ronaldo’s Saudi Pro League match, where Al-Nassr secured a 3-2 victory over Al-Shabab last Sunday (February 25).
In addition to the ban, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner faced a $6,800 fine and consequently missed the 4-4 draw against Al-Hazm on Thursday (February 29). Nunes suggested that Ronaldo’s actions stemmed from his struggle to accept defeat during an appearance on the Portuguese program Alo Portugal (via HIPER):
“Cristiano Ronaldo has a tough time dealing with losing. This has been the case since his youth. While this trait has propelled him to immense success, it also poses challenges. It fuels his relentless pursuit of excellence and achievement, but it also means he struggles to accept setbacks.”
She continued:
“However, he struggles to come to terms with moments when things don’t go his way, when he faces criticism, or when fans are not supportive. He may find it difficult to acknowledge that his career will eventually come to an end. In essence, Cristiano Ronaldo may not be equipped to cope with life’s setbacks.”
The 39-year-old striker is set to make his return to action in the first leg of Al-Nassr’s AFC Champions League quarter-final clash against Al Ain on Monday (March 4).
