According to a report by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Chicago Bears have spent the majority of the week exploring potential interest from other teams in their quarterback, Justin Fields.

Russini suggests that outside of Chicago, there’s a belief that the Bears are seeking to make a change at quarterback. This perception is affecting the team’s bargaining power, resulting in a lukewarm market for Fields.

“It was difficult to find significant interest from any team,” Russini noted. “An NFC general manager pointed out the challenge with the timing of the situation: ‘When people know you’re parting ways with something, they tend not to offer as much for it.'”

Prior to the NFL Scouting Combine, Bears general manager Ryan Poles did not firmly commit to any particular course of action regarding the quarterback position. However, he expressed a desire to handle the situation with Fields in a fair manner if, indeed, the young quarterback’s time with the Bears comes to an end.

The Athletic’s Jeff Howe sought to gauge the potential value of Fields in the trade market.

“The consensus seems to be that the Bears could secure a second- or third-round draft pick for Fields, although opinions varied slightly,” Howe explained. “One executive suggested that Fields could fetch a second-round pick outright or the equivalent value in a combination of a third- and fifth-round selection.”

In 2023, Fields did not have the breakout season that many had anticipated. The acquisition of wide receiver D.J. Moore, at the expense of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, appeared to reflect the Bears’ strong belief in Fields’ potential.

Despite posting respectable numbers of 2,562 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 13 starts, there’s still uncertainty surrounding Fields’ status as a bona fide franchise quarterback and cornerstone of an NFL offense.

Given this uncertainty, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Bears opted to select USC’s Caleb Williams as a long-term solution over Fields. Even if it means accepting a lesser return in a trade for Fields, the potential benefits of having Williams on a rookie contract would likely outweigh any perceived drawbacks.
