Veteran tight end Zach Ertz wrapped up the 2023 season on the Lions’ practice squad but opted not to commit to a future deal with them following the NFC Championship Game, allowing him to explore opportunities with other teams for the upcoming 2024 season.
According to Peter Schreier of Fox Sports, Ertz is currently engaged in discussions with the Commanders regarding a potential contract. Ertz’s tenure with the Lions came after being released by the Cardinals during the 2023 season. Although he joined the Lions in January, he did not see any game action with the team.
Ertz initially joined the Cardinals in a 2021 trade with the Eagles when Kliff Kingsbury was at the helm in Arizona. Kingsbury, now the Commanders’ offensive coordinator, departed the Cardinals after the 2022 season and made a return to the NFL with Washington earlier this year.
During the 2023 season, Ertz appeared in seven games for the Cardinals, tallying 27 receptions for 187 yards and one touchdown. With the Commanders parting ways with Logan Thomas, Ertz’s potential addition would bolster their tight-end corps, currently comprised of John Bates, Cole Turner, and Armani Rogers.
