Another prominent figure within the Formula 1 community has weighed in on the potential challenges Lewis Hamilton might face in keeping pace with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in the upcoming season.
Earlier this week, former Renault chief Flavio Briatore shared his perspective with Italian broadcaster Rai 1, suggesting that if Hamilton were to join Maranello, “he would do the same things as Leclerc”. Briatore added that Hamilton might find it challenging to maintain his lead over Charles, attributing this to Hamilton’s tendency to ease off when the car performance isn’t optimal.
Ralf Schumacher, a former F1 driver, echoes this sentiment. “Hamilton needs to feel he can win to perform at his best,” the German told formel1.de. “So the question arises – will he adapt to the new regulations coming in 2026?”
Schumacher, reflecting on the changing driving styles accompanying new rules, wonders whether the seven-time world champion, who will be 40 upon donning the red overalls, might encounter difficulties.
He even questions whether Hamilton’s extensive experience will significantly benefit Ferrari’s efforts. “While he brings expertise and insights, Ferrari seems well on its trajectory already,” Schumacher remarked.
Despite his reservations, Schumacher refrains from criticizing Frederic Vasseur’s decision to enlist Hamilton. “I’m confident Vasseur wouldn’t invest such a hefty sum without reason,” he noted. “He’ll provide Hamilton with everything needed to excel. However, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the frontrunner in the team.”
Schumacher anticipates potential friction within Ferrari due to the Hamilton-Leclerc pairing. “Hamilton will likely aim to outshine Leclerc and influence the car’s development direction,” he predicted.
Acknowledging Hamilton’s remarkable achievements, Schumacher nevertheless suggests that if he were a team principal choosing between Hamilton and triple world champion Max Verstappen, the latter would be his clear preference.
Schumacher highlighted Verstappen’s consistency and ability to extract maximum performance as distinguishing factors. Nonetheless, he maintains optimism about Ferrari’s prospects, suggesting that despite Hamilton’s potential challenges, the team remains poised for success.
