The Buffalo Bills made a significant move on Monday by signing nickel cornerback Taron Johnson to a three-year contract extension, ensuring his presence with the team until the 2027 season.
Johnson, aged 27, who recently earned his first All-Pro selection, was about to enter the final year of a three-year extension he signed back in 2021. Drafted by Buffalo in the fourth round of the 2018 draft from Weber State, he has been a starter since 2020.
This extension provides the Bills with a sense of continuity in what is set to be a revamped secondary. With the recent departures of starting cornerback Tre’Davious White and starting safety Jordan Poyer, coupled with the potential retirement of starting safety Micah Hyde, who has been a mainstay since 2017, Johnson’s retention adds stability to the team’s defensive lineup.
Last season, Johnson had a notable impact with 98 tackles and three forced fumbles, marking career highs, along with a sack. One of his standout performances occurred in a 14-9 victory over the New York Giants on Oct. 15, where he tallied a career-best 15 tackles and disrupted a pass into the end zone on the game’s final play.
Throughout his career, Johnson has amassed four interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and seven sacks across 88 games, including 67 starts.
